Description I've finally fulfilled another part of an intention for the year , namely to compile and issue a miscellany of Apophysis gradients. They're arranged by theme/colour and come with full preview picture to enable at-a-glance choice. 170 gradients in 13 groups. This took rather a while to compile, due to the fact that Maxthon/IE couldn't handle the number of table elements (the preview is actually compiled in HTML and converted to .png), so I fired up the fox and just managed to get a decent screenshot, even though its fullscreen view was playing up

I think this can qualify for my deviant's Appreciation Day good deed... can't it?

Terrific resource. Thank you for sharing. If I may ask, how did you get the pictures of each gradient? I have done some Apo gradients and I have posted them as a resource using the same fractal to show off each different gradient, but I really would like to show the gradient bar itself. Can you tell me how you did this which each one? Did you do a print screen of the gradient in Apo and then crop out everything else. If so, that must have taken you forever to do each one. This is an amazing piece and it does qualify for Appreciation Day good deed. This is a wonderful way to show the gradients in the pack.

Sorry it's taken so long to reply - my last journal should explain! To obtain these preview pictures, I have an Excel spreadsheet that converts the text of the .ugr files into suitably formatted HTML (each gradient index becomes a table data element 1px wide). I then tweak the columns manually, display in a browser and take a screenshot. If you're comfortable with spreadsheets, you're welcome to have a copy, otherwise if you'd like previews for your own gradient packs, I'd be happy to do them for you - it only takes 5 - 10 minutes to convert, but only works with fully-indexed gradients (e.g. those created with Smooth Palette).

Thanks so much for getting back to me on this. I really appreciate it because I think this looks terrific. I am comfortable with spreadsheets, and would love to have a copy of yours, if you wouldn't mind. Otherwise, I will be taking screenshots and cropping until the cows come home.

Also, I'm sorry to hear you have lost your enthusiasm for dA. I hope you get it back soon. You obviously have talent and you will be missed.

I've uploaded the file with some brief instructions - it should be downloadable from the link: [link] Let me know if that doesn't work as various other options are on offer. There shouldn't be any problems if all gradients were made using Smooth Palette, but I've occasionally found packs where this is not the case.

It's a HUGE file (30MB) - this allows it to cope with up to, I think, about 150 gradients at a go. One more thing - I seem to think that it requires the Analysis ToolPak to be installed, for the DEC2HEX function.

wolfepaw In reply to IDeviant [2009-03-04 16:29:50 +0000 UTC]

I've downloaded the file, no problem. I do have a question about the instructions. When you say "paste the range", what range do I use? Do I use the range of everything that was pasted into Excel? Can you by any chance do an example tutorial for this, using just a small gradient to show the basic steps? I think it would be a great help to people who might want to use this method of displaying their gradients. Can I use MS Word as the HTML editor?
And when you say wrap each column with:

[code]

does that mean each row of the Excel sheet? I'm sorry if these are stupid questions. I have never done anything like this before, and I'm not quite sure what I'm doing. If you could explain this step-by-step using just a small gradient, that would be most helpful. I am amazed you figured out how to do this in the first place! Thank you in advance for any help that you might be able to give. I'd really appreciate it.

IDeviant In reply to wolfepaw [2009-03-04 20:28:32 +0000 UTC]

By "paste the range", I refer to the contents of cell T3, which should actually be a range of cells like T6:T7654 - this is pasted into the Goto dialogue box reference field so that the range is selected for copying after pressing OK.

You'll need a proprietary HTML editor that provides a blank page framework: [link] I use MAX`s HTML Beauty++ 2004, near the bottom of the page. For the wrapping, I gave an example of 40 gradients to be displayed in 2 columns: this means you'll need

above your pasted code, and
half way down (after the code for the 20th gradient), then repeat for the remaining code. This is actually the stuff copied from the spreadsheet and pasted into your HTML editor. A bit of a learning curve, but given that you're OK with spreadsheets, I reckon you'll get there soon enough. Perhaps I'll get chance to put together that video tut in the next couple of days...

You are a PUSSYCAT!!!! Thank you so much for all the info. I will give this a try. I have downloaded the HTML editor (which I have never done before, editing HTML, I mean). "When" I get this done (notice I didn't say "If"), I will give you tons of credit for it. I am always happy to learn a new trick. I have to close all my apps to install the HTML editor, so I need to logout of dA and close the 10 other programs I have going right now before I can install it. I appreciate all the help. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thank you so very much. I really appreciate it. If I have trouble with it or need some pointers, can I ask you about it? This could be a great resource for those of us who create gradient packs for Apo or UF. I just love the way you can show the gradients with this format. I hope I can do this, because I think it's awesome!

I was startled by the discrepancies between 97 downloads and 15 faves until I tried to fave this. For some reason, clicking the favorites links does nothing and even the "Collect" link sits there inertly when I try to click it. Thank-you for sharing these gradients with us!

IDeviant In reply to rocamiadesign [2008-11-06 10:23:34 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, must be a weird discrepancy - try dragging upwards and your collections should appear on a top bar. It may then be dropped into one as desired.

rocamiadesign In reply to IDeviant [2009-01-07 22:55:23 +0000 UTC]

That's what I finally ended up doing. It's a pain having to wait for the bar to appear, but at least I know that they're going to end up in my favorites.

Cool! A sneaky way to generate them: drop saturation on any gradient to zero, then adjust brightness as required. Probably quicker than using Smooth Palette as I did!

I wish I had my gradients organized like this. I still hope that one day in the future apo will let us move our own gradients to the drop-down list.

If you have any groups of gradients you want renaming and collecting in this way, it wouldn't be difficult (provided they were created with 'Smooth Palette'. In fact, straight previews take a mere 5 minutes - it was the number that caused the problems with this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

baba49 In reply to IDeviant [2008-09-26 01:29:20 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes I make gradients using the smooth palette, sometimes I change a default gradient, sometimes I use apo map and I was very sloppy about naming them thus have no way to check how they were made.
What do you mean by "straight previews take a mere 5 minutes? Can I replace the default preset gradients in the drop-down menu with my own?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IDeviant In reply to baba49 [2008-09-26 17:54:05 +0000 UTC]

No, you cannot replace the default set in the drop-down. But by a preview, I mean the enclosed .png file which gives an at-a-glance view of all gradients. If you have a gradient file with no more than 150 gradients, and they're all in the 256-point format, then I can create a .png file showing all very easily.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

baba49 In reply to IDeviant [2008-09-26 23:47:33 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Ian for the offer. Just looking at the png doesn't particularly help me. I have to see a gradient on the actual flame to see how it works and to test many gradients as quickly as possible the preset button is the best imho. I use the apo gradient tools in the gradient window a lot to change gradients to fit a flame. If exceptionally I start out with specific colors in mind I use apo map or paint the desired colors with psp and enter them into apo using the smooth palette. If the presets could be exchanged I would be tempted to test other peoples gradient that they offer for download.
Have a great weekend

IDeviant In reply to KariAnnLax [2008-09-23 14:26:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, they're a very specific format (.ugr), so I have my doubts. But there's a chance that PS might read/import the more universal Fractint .map files - if so, I should be able to convert them en masse. Let me know if it does and they're yours!
