I've had many people ask me this question so I'm going to elaborate the best I can.

As the FAQ above states, to get far on deviantART you HAVE to give feedback to get it. It's almost virtually impossible for you to get noticed without doing any of that. I learned that after a year of being here.

Browse Art

This is something that you will have to do in your dA lifetime in order to find your inspirations and be able to learn new techniques. When on the front page of deviantART it's probably the most diverse amount of artwork you'll see! Ranging from pixels to sculptures, tattoos to anime to poems, there has to be at least one that can catch your eye! There are millions of deviants here and even more submissions! Try searching for artworks that please you. You can even have a randomized search by using stuff like the random deviation button. You have an unlimited amount of stuff to browse here!

Add artworks that you like to your favorites! You never know if the artist may return the favor for you! (Keep in mind I'm not saying you should favorite things and expect people to give favorites back. Sometimes what goes around, comes around.)

COMMENT! A lot of people tend to favorite and run here. While favorites are nice, comments are better! They can be used to give advice, compliment or get advice! Most of the artists here will take time to respond to your comments because you took time to make one. You only get what you give. So make sure to use communication to your advantage.

There are many different channels that provide different types of art! Check them out at channels .

Watch people you like! By watching somebody, you'll receive stuff they make in your inbox! Support them and they might support you!

-Tip: When commenting, you should refrain from one word comments like "Cool" and stuff like that. That doesn't help the artist at all! Although complimenting is nice, you should at least try and point out stuff that you liked! Comments like "I like how the composition in the piece looks!" is a much better comment. Strive to use comments to their full potential.

Submit Art

Producing artwork is the number 1 way to get noticed on this site. A lot of times, you will usually get a favorite or two from people browsing the "Newest" page. While you don't HAVE to post artwork on this site on this website to get noticed; it's highly recommended. When posting artwork you should.

ALWAYS STRIVE TO IMPROVE. You can never get worse.

Post quality art, while submitting art can get you noticed, make sure you are submitting your best. Quality over quantity!

Leave a description. I can't tell you the countless amounts of deviations I've seen without these! People like to see how your artwork came about! You can write your inspirations for the piece, definitely should link your references, how much time it took and your tools of trade (what you used to make it!). Write something! Something is better than nothing at all.

Post in the corresponding gallery. This is where finding your community comes in. If you post art in a certain category; people who appreciate the same type of art will see it too! If you aren't sure where to post your art, break it down to the components!

LABEL your art correctly. It makes people easier for people to search it up!

-Tip: You should always only post YOUR artwork and yours only. Posting artwork that isn't yours is never the best way to go. You should only create artworks that were made with your hands. Crediting where you got an artwork from doesn't give you the right to post it. You need permission to use somebody's artwork. With pictures that were made using references, you should link them back to the original artist (Ex: photo manipulations, drawings, etc).

Who are you?

This is also an important part of being a part of dA. While it doesn't really doesn't promise for deviants to swarm to your page. It's a very important part of being a part of this website! When somebody takes the chance to click on your username, they want to see who you're all about so make sure you just leave a little description to help them out a bit! Make sure you write about yourself!

Make sure when you write about yourself you don't give out personal information. This is the internet, while there is many nice people here, there is always the bad ones that are out to get you!

Keep your page a reasonable. Meaning having a flashy page is nice but don't make it TOO flashy. Some people can't handle that stuff on their computers (like me. >.>) and will ultimately drive people away!

Critique

People love getting critiqued! Don't be an afraid to get deeper with your critique. If the artist asked for a critique; give 'em one! A critique should go over the good, the bad and what they can do to make it better. Don't just say all the good and forget to tell them what's bad; we're not perfect so there is always something they can improve on. Same with just telling them the bad and forgetting to do the good; there will always have to be something good in a piece of artwork. That's why you have to analyze it!

When writing a critique, you need a certain amount of characters; use them! Don't just leave a sentence about it and write random stuff to fill up the space! There are comments for that!

Journals

Journals are multi-purpose! You can almost use them for anything here! To write an art feature, an article (like this!), to wash your dog too! (Just kidding. xD) You can talk about your personal life or talk about contests, how you washed your dog, anything! Use journals to your advantage!

Prevent from using journals for dArama (drama). We already have enough drama llamas here.

Journals are pieces of art too! Treat them like it!

Forums

Get connected with the community using this! Lots of people totally forget that we even have a forum! There are so many nice people among the forums who just love responding to threads. Just make sure you please the forum gods with your threads. One wrong thread and you will have EVERYBODY jumping on you like a dog chasing after a ball. Be careful what you write here because it will stay there forever! Fortunately, you can lock your own threads if they get out of control. Make sure you use that to your advantage too! Make sure you go visit the forums and make a thread or respond to them!

The forums aren't your personal journal, remember that.

Chat

Another way you can connect with our massive community! There are tons of chat rooms where you can meet somebody with the same interests as you! There a chat rooms basically for everything, games, art sharing, roleplaying and some just for the fun of chatting. Check out the chat rooms today!

Chat rooms have certain rules. Make sure you read them and abide by them!

Groups

Oh the mysterious magic groups can pull! There is a group for nearly everything here and if there isn't. Make one! There is bound to be somebody who supports your cause. Groups are amazing things here. You can connect with other artists who like the same things as you and you can have people notice your artwork! Posting your artwork to groups helps lots in the long run. You can even see random groups by clicking the button too!

Make sure you post your artwork in the right places. Your picture of a tree shouldn't be in an anime fan group.

Badges

Everybody loves badges! They are fun to give and receive! It doesn't take more than a minute to give somebody a llama (a little prank that dA pulled which soon came to be a trading frenzy of fun!); they're free! Certain people will love you for giving them badges, so try to give them out! Start giving them out today using the random deviant  button! Or celebrate somebody's birthday by giving them cake!

There are certain badges that are given by deviantART on special occasions. If you're like me; you'll definitely attack those!

Social SharingThis one usually is a matter of luck but there is no hard in trying it! This method includes using social networks like reddit, facebook, twitter and so much more places. They allow for you to display your art to a larger audience. It's not guaranteed that you will get noticed from it but sometimes it works. :')

Advertising
This is not an option you should use to get yourself noticed. Not only is it extremely disrespectful to whichever artist you decided to use as your advertising board and other people will not view your art, ruining your reputation.

A much better way to advertise would be using AdCast , a feature that allows you to buy an advertisement that promotes yourself (or whatever you want promoted) across deviantART.

There are tons of ways to get yourself known here; use them to your advantage and you'll be on your way to success!

My old DA account had a good amount of watchers. I let them know I moved, but I doubt they check my statuses or anything like that. I really wanna get back to that place, but that profile was no more then a mess in and of itself...it was my middle school account, and I'm letting it decay. XD

Besides, watch for watch  is extremely lame and only gets you inactive watchers

I’d rather have a low number of watchers who actually fav my artworks and interact than a bunch who don’t pay attention to anything I post.

This site is extremely frustrating and most would say I’m “popular” because I have more watchers than most....but it’s still hard. The work you have to put in here is tiring

Maybe because of DA is a land for artists... like there is too many artists and easy to get "drowned", unless they actually following you.

Thanks for the tips. I'll have to apply them and see where it'll go from there. It IS very hard to get noticed here. I've been on DA for more than 2 years now, and it took until last year to get my first Watcher. I managed to get just 21 in all, but 4 have left DA altogether recently, taking a good portion of Favorites with it, which I didn't get much of to begin with, either. I don't mean to rant about something so trivial, but it's frustrating because a lot of time and effort went into all my artwork (no offense, but I occasionally see some artwork here that look very sloppy, yet  they somehow manage to get a lot of Favorites and page views). I'm considering leaving DA altogether.

You don't have to leave. Maybe just visit and post whenever you feel like to. DA isn't the best site to get noticed, because imo this is a site where everyone is an artists. Lots of competitors. Also, I see deviants get watchers because they are active (in chats, forum, etc).

But you can try promote your arts through IG, Twitter or FB, platforms that has many users but not so many artists (at least in your circle). Less competitors, more recognition.

I have another acc and been there for 3 years. I only get 1k watches, and 7 watchers.
