Description This tutorial is mainly for artisans, craftspeople, and sculptors who find that it's difficult to display their work well in photos, but can't afford a professional photographer. This is basic instruction on how to get the most out of a cheap digital camera. I go through lighting and photographing techniques, as well as some simple Photoshop techniques. Don't worry! If you don't have Photoshop, you will still benefit from reading the first 6 steps. Please let me know if you find this useful in any way, and enjoy!

I was laughing at how many times you used the word "crappy" in here.
Nice tutorial, though -- shows that you don't need fancy equipment to get a decent photograph.

Those who don't have Photoshop can use GIMP for cleaning up photos and for adding up frames and signatures.

I use his technique too so I can only confirm everything that was said here. And who doesn't have Photoshop, they can try the GIMP which is for free and can do the same as PS. [link]

oh my gosh, you're my new hero. My biggest problem is getting the camera to focus correctly - my items are so small that my macro feature can't even do it justice! But I'm so much more motivated to try now. haaha. thanks!

Very nice tutorial!
I have a crappy camera, but usually I can take good pictures of things.
But then there are those times when your camera just sucks, right?
So this tutorial is very helpful in those times!
Again, good job on this!

Very handy tutorial. I imagine this would also be useful for taking stock photos of small objects. And it's so simple, too, just requiring natural light (which is free), pieces of paper, some tape, and a box to prop the paper up.

I love the facial expression you have in the first picture. It gives off the feeling of "my camera is crappy and I'm embarrassed to own it."

I just have a crappy camera (a Kodak something something) but I often take my own photos for my articles and for my magazine. This is a real help for my next shoot (makeup for a product review).

Well done Always nice to see the steps others take in Photoshop to get to the end result.

Even on a crappy camera you do have a aperture priority setting to control your Depth of Field captured on your subject... If your photo results are soft unfocused edges (if you don’t want that result), you can use a higher f-# to slow down the shutter speed to capture cleaner edges.
