This is actually really cool!! But what I do is, do all the mane with the smallest line, when I'm done I trace it again with the space between the way I want and paint it with the bucket toll, the way to do smallest lines, and for me it's easier and better, because I do it this way and looks horrible XD

What I like to do is fill in the base with the colors/cutie mark/markings/etc., copy the base and put another thing of it off to the side, sketch out the mane, do the lines (after finding the right thickness with the curve tool), take out the sketch lines, sharpen them, fix the overlapped lines, take the mane-base and put it on the normal base to remove any white streaks from the mane sketch and then fill in the mane ;v;

But about the tool they use to doll, they use tablet, trackpads etc...
But I think it aint rare to find an MS paint mouse doller xD
