Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update ! Here's some of what you had to say.

  • Deviants were pleased with the introduction of Madefire to deviantART.
  • Feedback regarding purchasing Premium Content varied. Some mentioned purchasing or selling adoptables, while others mentioned resources, such as textures or digital doll bases.
  • Some deviants would like a way to find deviants with similar interests, based on similarities in their Favourites. Suggested by Jackartha

Featured Gallery

When visiting your own Gallery or the Gallery of another deviant, the section displayed by default is your Featured folder. Do you organize what appears in your Featured folder and what does not, or do you submit everything to your Featured folder? When looking at another deviant's Gallery, do you typically go directly to the "Browse" mode, or do you usually browse through their Featured folder and other folders?

These journals are primarily meant to inform people of changes, reports made here may easily be missed, it's really not the best avenue for ensuring that the report gets where it should. Plus, as far as I know, $wreckling is in charge of other kinds of stuff, so he can't really help with such a report.

The Help Desk is where the people hired for this kind of job are, plus all tickets there are carefully tracked; it's the equivalent of going to the Police station, directly. The chances of getting your report seen are 100% with the Help Desk.

In other people's galleries, I tend to hit browse after scrolling through featured, especially if there aren't any folders. I've found good art that way.

I personally hate writing journals due to it changing so much between journal entries. This just means that I will have to get used to one more change (or not: you can't force me)
As for Featured Gallery:
- Browsing others- I hit Browse. If I'm gonna go through a galllery, I wanna go thru the WHOLE thing, and not have to search for what I might've seen in a preview.
-My Featured Gallery- Everything goes into it, mainly due to what I stated above. I spend more time organizing my sub-folders than I do the Featured. However, Scraps never make it to the Featured Gallery.

Still reading? I'm hoping you admins are reading this suggestion.

So everybody is complaining about the porn and stuff on dA, and the response is always "use the mature filter". Then they whine "but it filters too much out!"

Well that made me think. What if we could choose which mature content filter to filter out via drop- down menu!?
Like we could explicitly filter out sexual content, or idealogically sensitive, e.g.
I also suggest that you let people customize the categlories for themselves as well.

The mature filter exists because there are rules about what minors get to see. It's not meant to be some complex filtering system: either you're 18+ or not.

What you're looking for is probably better employed in tags, which you could actually perform searches for. And we could use a bit of a revamp on the tag system, to mae it more community-based (meaning other people would have the ability -with some limitations- to complete the tag lists for other people's deviations.

Speaking of Folders, here's a Feature Request: I'd like to be able to follow a Folder directly, without following all the other folders the artist/group has got going. (Or at least be able to exclude certain folders.)

In several cases, I'm very interested in one particular subset of a Deviant's work, but very 'meh' about the other stuff that shows up from them in my Deviation Stacks.

Also, it would be cool to be able to follow particular Favourites folders, as well.

PhoenixPhlox In reply to Elyandarin [2013-04-14 12:44:43 +0000 UTC]

It seems an interesting idea... but I see a problem.

What happens when the deviant deletes the folder?

It is enough if I think about how many things I changed in my gallery just in the last few months... I changed the folders several times, and when I get premium membership I added subfolders, deleted some other folders, and moved their contents to new folders, because it seemed better this new way.
If someone would watch only one of my folders, what would happen when I delete it or add subfolders to it?
As you see the problem is that folders change easily.

How would you solve this problem?

Elyandarin In reply to PhoenixPhlox [2013-04-14 15:03:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, off the top of my head I guess it would work something like this:

Renaming Followed Folder:
Notify follower about the change.
(Notification goes into Activity Stack, same as changes in usernames.)

New Subfolder in Followed Folder:
Auto-follow, notify follower and give the option to deny with one click.

Deletion of Followed Folder :
1: Unfollow Folder
2: Folder owner gets the option to choose a default location for auto-moving the displaced Follows - possibly to several folders, in case they've split the content over several new folders.
(The "Move Followers" option should be some kind of Correspondence Item, so it doesn't screw things up if you delete the old folder before you create the new one, or if you mess around a lot before settling on the final folder system.)
3: When the owner specifies a change - or if the message expires - notify follower about the change.
(Note: When a Follow is auto-moved, the Follower might get a bunch of old stuff in their DeviantWatch - but only if Owner is impolite and moves the Follow before he populates the folder.)

Creating new Folder (or subfolder in NONfollowed folder):
Nothing happens. (Possibly you could add some feature - a Premium Feature, perhaps - where the owner can ask followers of a specific folder if they'd also like to follow another folder. Otherwise you could accomplish the same thing by deleting and recreating a folder, only it'd take work if you had a lot of stuff in it.)

Does that cover it?

PhoenixPhlox In reply to Elyandarin [2013-04-14 17:53:25 +0000 UTC]

Interesting very interesting.

Personally I would skip this part:
"2: Folder owner gets the option to choose a default location for auto-moving the displaced Follows..."
After working for days with cleaning and reordering my gallery, the last thing I desire is to deal with a dozen or more correspondence messages for the sake of people, who decided that my works are all "meh" except one folder.

Your solution brings up new questions.

If you follow the entire gallery... every folders, then will you get notifications about every single gallery changes?

Of course it should be optional... how silly I am.

Do you know many times I read that some people wanted something to be optional?
Too many times... and I'm not even stuff, I just read into the comments sometimes

We just forget, that a big part of the dA community have difficulties to use even those options we currently have. How could they use such an "un-userfriendly" site where everything is optional, and you have to go through a hundred settings and menus if you don't want to get overloaded with various mostly insignificant notifications?

Another thing is, that maybe the option to follow folders would motivate the gallery owners to create less organized galleries, and keep everything in one or a few folders, to show more things to their watchers (or rather to leave less options for them :b).

Please don't misunderstand me. I see why do you wish this option. It would be practical for certain things...
I'm simply wondering if it would bring more positive or more negative things to the whole community.

Elyandarin In reply to PhoenixPhlox [2013-04-14 20:59:01 +0000 UTC]

I went for the gallery owner being able to redirect follows mostly because it's efficient in terms of total man-hours spent fiddling with dA settings.
If the gallery owner neglects doing this, what happens is what would have happened anyway. (Also, if they abuse the ability, people will stop following them altogether, so they have incentive not to mess things up.)
And I figure as long as some people want to micromanage their follows, it is a net win in time saved.

For many notifications at once, it's probably better if they stack together for each followed user, like fave notifications do for individual deviations.
For sake of simplicity, you might skip folder change notifications for those following an entire gallery, since these notifications would be mostly useless for them. For the rest, though, subfolderchanges might still be relevant, since following an individual folder kinda marks you as the 'choosy' type.

There are cool things dA could do with this information, like displaying "most followed folders", or collecting information of follows, assuming folders followed by the same user tend to have similar content.

Also, if you extended the ability to Favourites folders, I think one cool effect could be the establishing of a kind of fave food chain network. Sometimes, I see people with a zillion faves, and I think, "Hm. They must trawl the 'new deviations' flow, picking the top 5% or something. Now if only someone else trawled this faves folder, picking the top 5% from THERE, then the resulting faves folder - or the next in the chain - might be worth checking out."

Thank you for providing quality feedback, btw
Your criticism is well thought-out, and I appreciate someone taking the time to consider my suggestions seriously

For the UI, I figure when Watching someone, you could have an "Advanced settings" button, expanding the form to allow you to choose individual folders. Also, when browsing a gallery, you could have a "watch this folder only" button next to the general "watch button".
Comments?

PhoenixPhlox In reply to Elyandarin [2013-04-15 14:14:15 +0000 UTC]

Now this suggestion started to have a shape

I'm not sure that the "most followed folders" option would show something new.
The one who has the most watchers has the most followed folders, so it would only show what we already know, that who are the most popular deviants.
I think people would like to see something that shows the unseen talents, that's why I like the second option more, the "most followed favorite folders"
There is a chance that there are deviants who "hunt" for under appreciated things, and their favorite folders could get some attention.

Why don't you make a visual or written suggestion of it? ...like these: [link]

You could add how would it work for groups, because group folders are a bit different, they can accept a limited amount of deviations, and then the admins usually create another one.
Sometimes they close the old one.
Sometimes they close folders only until they clean it...

Closed folders don't accept new deviations unless something is not removed from them and the admins open them again. They are not deleted folders but they can be inactive... so if someone watched the folder, they should know about it I think.

Supergroups can have subfolders too just like premium accounts.
And then following your logic, it would mean new correspondence items for group admins too.

But I'm still not sure that giving the right to the gallery or group owner to redirect watches is a safe idea.
In this way the folder owner techically can decide what the watcher should watch.

For example, if I draw Transformers fan art, and I have a folder for it, people watch it, and I see that there are many watchers on that folder, then I can create a ... digital art folder and traditional art folder and sort my art by technique and not by theme, and redirect the watchers to these two folders instead of one, because I copied there the old Transformers folder's content... with everything else they didn't want to see. And I can always say that it seemed logical to me, because I will continue submitting into those new folders.

I mean there are ways to cheat. And if there is a way to cheat people will do it.

It's safer if only the watchers get notification about the folder changes, and then they can visit the gallery, and look around if they want to watch another folder or not.

But it still leaves ways to cheat...
What if I simply rename the folder to Fan Art and copy there everything from the other folders too. I don't even need to redirect any watchers.

Or I accidentally move something into my most followed folder

But there is no need for cheating. Just think about what can happen in a gallery.
Originally I created one folder for each fandom. But I had too many folders, so I created a Fan Art folder and copied there every fan art deviations.

>>Let's say that someone can watch this Fan Art folder.<<

I didn't like my old works, and I created an Archive folder for old miscellaneous stuff. I removed many things from the Fan Art folder.

>>This doesn't generate any new messages yet...<<

Then I saved some points and bought a premium membership, and I decided to try subfolders.
I sorted the deviations again, and copied back many things into the Fan Art folder too.

>>Would those images appear again for the watcher?<<

Then I deleted the worst deviations from my gallery, more than he half of all submissions, and sorted into the subfolders what remained.

>>Subfolder notifications<<

What if I sort everything into the subfolders, and I will not submit anything into the main Fan Art folder any more? How can I notify the watchers that "hey watch the subfolders, because there won't be anything here" ???
The folder is there, simple gallery folders cannot be closed like group folders, technically it could accept deviations, so there is no reason to generate redirecting correspondence messages for the owner. The watcher will get the subfolder notification, but will they know that I won't use the main folder???

Copying and moving files changing folders closing and reopening folders are everyday activities in galleries and group galleries.
If someone would watch my folder changes, they would get a lot of notifications when I work on the gallery. They couldn't follow what did I put and where. That's why I prefer to do it in silence, and announce it in my journal when I'm ready.

What would you suggest against these "middle-work" and other irrelevant notifications?

Actually I enjoy this theory making So I'm glad you don't mind it
It would be great to see a final polished suggestion of this idea
If you really make suggestion deviation of it, I'll feature it

sorry for grammar mistakes or typos :3

I'd certainly agree with this idea. There have been several times where I've found a comic or something to that matter that I really enjoyed, but after looking through the artist's regular stuff, I didn't want to keep up with the content. Sometimes it was just because the other artwork just wasn't my taste or I just didn't want to be spammed.

When prompted to 'watch' a deviant, a settings tab with the option to only watch a certain folder would be awesome.

I used to organize my Featured folder, but I got tired of it (The "random faves" function takes its pic order from Browse anyway - accordingly, nowadays I simply make sure I fave pics in the right order.)
If I wanted to put all my faves into the Featured folder today, it would take about an hour or so of work, and yield little benefit.
In conclusion, it would be better for me if I could just choose "Browse" as the default view for visitors.

Oh, I misunderstood the question as having to do with Favourites. Nevermind the above.

With my own Gallery, I like being able to drag things around to break up stretches of same-colour deviations, and remove the 'meh' submissions to specialized categories.

Looking through galleries of others, though, I hypocritically use Browse most of the time, because the deviations I like are not always those the Artist likes, and looking through subfolders takes too much time.

By default, I put everything into my "featured" folder, and copy others into folders. There are a few exceptions, though:

>If it's a sketch or low-quality, I put it in my scraps.
>If it's a simple image (e.g. a custom avatar) or part of a large set (e.g. trading cards) I put them in a folder but not in Featured.

I usually look at other deviants' "Featured" folder, or the other folders if they sound interesting.

I use my feature folder more like "My Favorites' or "Most Popular" section. I try to submit things straight into the folder that i want to divide them into. And really like that I can do multiple submissions during the submission process. I also keep my most recent submission pretty long on my main profile page so people can see a little while back. It would be nice if the journal page showed where the picture was in my folders too. So that viewers could follow it when they flip to the journal.

My gallery has many types of art, like digital art and photography. I don't want my visitors to step in a messy folder, so I don't use the featured folder. I submit my art in sub-folders, so they are sorted by type of media.

When I browse gallery, I first look at the Featured art. If it please me, I use the Browse button. If the artist has a varied gallery and a lot of artworks, then I'll start checking the folders (if any).
