What's New


The New Way To Write Journals (Beta Testers Only)

Sta.sh Writer's toolbar and sidebar have been incorporated into the Write a Journal Entry  page to make for a more dynamic journal creation experience! Some of the most highly requested features for the Journal submission page have been present in Sta.sh Writer for some time, such as rich-text formatting and a formatting toolbar. With Sta.sh Writer's advanced capability added, writing a Journal becomes even easier than before.

Change Log

  • There were some layout issues on the Premium Membership page. Fixed by yury-n
  • Premium Membership notices have been visually improved. Fixed by allixsenos
  • The "Add to Favourites" icon did not display properly in Internet Explorer 8. Fixed by shahyarg
  • An error could occur when trying to view deviations that had Prints enabled. Fixed by allixsenos
  • The category selector on the Write a Journal Entry page was not visibly clickable, and the modal to select a category had visual issues. Fixed by kemayo
  • In certain circumstances, the Search bar would take focus when trying to type into the Deviant Login menu. Fixed by muteor
  • Profile pages wouldn't display properly if the Journal widget was installed, but no Journals had been posted. Fixed by muteor
  • On the Edit Prints page, editing the percentage on the "Update all royalties at once" field would only update the first price. Fixed by yury-n
  • Logged out visitors to the Journal Portal would be prompted with a "Join deviantART" modal if there was a Journal flagged as mature content on the page. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Under some conditions, the "Previous" and "Next" buttons on deviation pages would not redirect correctly when used after using the browser's back button. Fixed by muteor
  • Deleting images from one's Portfolio  could result in an error. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Disqualification from a contest would not automatically move deviations out of that contest's category. Fixed by shahyarg
  • .gif files can now be submitted to more categories. Fixed by yury-n
  • The placement of some deviation images would cause the image to touch the top bar of the site. Fixed by muteor
  • Browsers would try to autocomplete passwords, when buying from the Shop . Fixed by ZombieCoder

Sta.sh / Submit

  • A "Print not enabled" message would display on items in Sta.sh. Fixed by kouiskas
  • The warning shown when blocking third-party cookies was too light to read. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When uploading an image, the instant preview displayed didn't respect EXIF rotation settings. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When using the "Enter text" option of the Submit page, the downloadable file created was .txt when it should have been .html. Fixed by kouiskas
Sta.sh Writer
  • Google Webfonts was updated. Fonts added between December and last week are now available. Fixed by kemayo
  • The "Draw" option was missing from thumbnails when leaving comments in Sta.sh. Fixed by kemayo
  • Clicking "Remove" on a thumbnail added from the sidebar would remove the image, but it would not place the cursor where the thumb had been. Fixed by Alisey
  • Some weird behavior could occur when using the Writer toolbar to format text. Fixed by Alisey
  • Pressing the tab button when leaving comments in Sta.sh would indent instead of moving focus to the "Submit Comment" button. Fixed by inazar
  • Dragging files into a comment in Sta.sh would cause an error, instead of uploading the files. Fixed by inazar

Featured Gallery

When visiting your own Gallery or the Gallery of another deviant, the section displayed by default is your Featured folder. Do you organize what appears in your Featured folder and what does not, or do you submit everything to your Featured folder? When looking at another deviant's Gallery, do you typically go directly to the "Browse" mode, or do you usually browse through their Featured folder and other folders?

Trevor, remember I mentioned to you once to bring part of the feature of Discovery Beta to More Like This in a way (front page) which was that, when you clicked Discovery Beta, you could at default see suggestions of artists and art based on similar interests and faves and watchers rather than having to click an individual deviation to see features 'similar to that'?

That is what ~Jackartha just pointed out!

I actually organize my gallery so there`s really only one thing in my Featured folder. I usually browse through other people`s folder ,but I do use the Browse option.

I submit everything to various folders of my gallery, leaving the Featured only my best work. As the default gallery link leads to Featured section, I use it to give to my potential clients or employers for review (as a portfolio).

When browsing other deviant's gallery, I only click "Browse" if I like what they have in the Featured section, to see if they have more work.

I find it very useful to have a feature part of my gallery and then folders and sub folders to organise everything. I am very prolific & in more then one area, so I like to organise things a bit more because that way people can look at what interests them in my gallery and ignore the other stuff.

I start off my submitting everything in the featured once it is new, but after a week or so I will then move some of my work into the folders and sub-folders I have. I like the fact that we can control what does go into featured and what does not, because I have well over 2k deviations in my gallery not including scraps and the stuff I have in storage.

I still think you should allow premium members to have more control or remove more like this. I hate the feature a lot and it is really putting me off DA. I feel it is ruining my experience of the site, since you are forcing me to advertise, which apparently I pay to get rid of it.

I have no idea why you are not even addressing this, since many of us are very angry about this feature.

Also, about the 'featured gallery'...
I usually browse through the featured folder first. Then I usually check out the gallery folders I think are most interesting. If I really like their main gallery, I check out their scrapbook too. I only use the 'browse' option when there is (almost) nothing displayed in the featured folder.

It boggles me when one of the last updates so many people said they like the ability to have Stash for longer, more complex journals, and the regular portal for short, easy entries. You have just negated that. I love Stash and the ability to add picture, etc. I use it all the time. But it has issues, particularly with formatting and saving. I have lost work more than once. I hate that I am now forced to use it when I want to write a 3-line journal to my watchers.

I usually am supportive of most of the changes dA has been making in the past few months, but I am so disappointed in this. Especially when you guys tried this a while back and there was an uproar. Just putting it in a prettier packaging doesn't change the fact you are forcing Stash for all journals.

Well, it's still in the beta testing phase, one of the perfect moments to start ironing out bugs, based on reports. I'd like to believe that when they roll it out for everyone, it will be bug-free.

Stash is buggy and it has been for months and months. I still periodically lose everything, have the formatting of long journals destroyed. I have to write everything offline and cut-and-paste because if I depend solely on the Stash interface, I end up with issues.

This new journal system is Stash. it's not the old journal input page. So any problems inherent in Stash will carry over to this. Unless they are gonna fix Stash before this rolls out, this will be buggy too.

Regarding folders, it wasn't until I had troubles removing things from my favourites that I learnt that the 'featured' folders are not the actual favourites themselves. Perhaps if this could be made more clear to new users somehow?

Anyway, I use both the Featured and Subfolders, generally putting things I like more in both. Similar with my Favourites.

Regarding other deviants, I actually often accidently click 'More like this' rather than 'view Gallery' on a deviation. Anyway, once I eventually find my way to their gallery, I take a look through the featured folder to get a feel for what they put there, then if I'm curious or looking for something specific, I'll click the browse button.

My only concern about recommending artists based on what one 'favourites' is that dA becomes too much like Facebook or Google+ in the sence that they're shoving people you might be interested in following in your face.

Should this go through, a passive approach (like what tumblr does) is something I'd support more.

How about removing the advertisement you call More Like This from my pages? I pay premium subscription rates to have that space clear of advertisements, yet there they are!! at the very least, return it to a button.

How about being able to re-organize the Notes system according to my preference, like any email system, by sender, or date, or subject?

How about the ability re-arrange my experience of deviation pages according to personal preferences? I personally would rather have the Statistics at the top, then More from This Artist, then FAV and Download buttons (and MLT if a button) then Groups, THEN AT THE VERY BOTTOM THE MORE LIKE THIS. We can rearrange profile pages, why not deviation pages?

I usually come from an image I accidentally stumbled across → then if I like I click the "view gallery" link below/ beneath → and then "browse"
BUT PLEASE make the "view gallery" link BIGGER.. best as big as the "add to favorites" button

Like when I copy the username and paste it on the journal, it just appears as a link text, and you have to type it on your own....

I tend to submit all of my work to featured when it's first uploaded. But over time I only keep my favourite/most popular work in that area, and send the rest to the appropriate folders.

When browsing other's galleries, I generally check out their featured work, unless they ONLY keep their work in folders.

Actually... although when the changes to writing Journals in STASH were first announced I was very happy with what I could do...
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not necessarily want to be forced into STASH each time I want to write a Journal... OH NO!!!! That in fact limits me for instance when I want to change the size of my TEXT LETTERS..... and so on and so forth...
I think one should be able to have the option to write either in STASH OR NOT!!!!!!!!
Sorry guys... I know you are working hard at this, and I appreciate it.... but.. this "limitation" does not appear to be good for me and others....

Of course, I haven't tested some possible scenarios, such as CSS formatting; at the moment, I can only guess why it doesn't work in all scenarios. In any case, I would classify what you'd encountered as a bug, which I hope will get resolved by the time the feature gets released.

This is my thought. I love using Stash for journals but I liked having the non-Stash option for quick postings. I am so disappointed in this.

I write dozens of articles for the site and dozens of journals. HTML does NOT fix the problems. Granted, it works a good deal of the time, but that doesn't negate the times when you spend an hour on an article and lose it. There are very serious bugs in that system and now users will not have any option but to use it--even for simple stuff.

Stuff was requested by various users, so they made it happen. As for keeping 2 alternatives to every process, I can only imagine that it would increase the amount of resources needed to maintain, update and fix the site.

I never even mentioned keeping two separate systems. I merely asked what are the reasons for the change. Last time I checked- which was, admittably, years ago- the journal system worked fine, and I never heard any major complaints concerning it. It brings my question, what makes this change necessary or desirable?
As a matter of fact, how does a request by various users make a good reason for a site- wide update that will affect every single person using it?

The way I see it, features were requested and they're being provided; formatting options are becoming more accessible to the average users. I don't perceive the effects as negative, so long as things are accessible and not bugged.

I'm selective in what I put in my featured folder. Although most of my submissions goes there by default from the beginning, it is only the pieces that I really like that stay there for long.

When it comes to other deviants' galleries I usually start by looking through their featured folder. If I really like what I see, and if there isn't terribly many deviations in the featured folder, I use the browse function. I also sometimes look in the other folders, if there is something more specific I'm looking for.

I usually browse all works in browse mode or by:username mode rather than featured always. Though, if I am particularly set on something, I will sometimes use the folders.
