In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .


What's New


The New deviantART Mobile Site

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we've released a brand new version of the mobile site! The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.


Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile site to offer many more features than the previous version did, and it also makes for a more smooth user experience. The end result is a seamless mobile site, and it looks a little like this:



  • You can Browse art, check your Message Center, reply to Notes, browse your friends' Profiles and Galleries, visit the Forums, view today's Daily Deviations and do almost everything else you can on the desktop version of the site!
  • The drop down menu usually located in the top left corner of the site can be accessed by tapping on the deviantART logo, allowing you to easily access familiar tools without complication. 


  • You can find wallpapers for your phone using the "Wallpaper" app available in the main menu!
  • The Message Center is located in one place, which makes responding to comments and browsing art and Journals a quick, easy experience. Deviants who enjoy viewing their Message Center one section at a time can tap on the arrow next to "Messages" at the top of the Message Center. This will prompt the Message Center's left sidebar to appear and allow selection one section of the Message Center to view at a time.
  • Journal Skin designers, if you'd like control how your skin looks in a mobile browser, learn how to use our new mobile media queries .

Prints Integration on Deviation Pages

We've implemented an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.



We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.



Because the functionality of the old Prints pages has been added to the deviation page, you can now preview how your Prints purchase will look without having to leave the deviation page! Once you select a product type, the preview will update to reflect your selection.


The New Submit Art Page (Beta Testers Only)

Beta Testers, we're bringing you a complete revamp of the Submit Art page! While the page you're familiar with has been a long-standing part of deviantART, the new page is designed to be more intuitive, user-friendly, and up to date with deviantART as it is today.

Sta.sh
  • When changing the main file of an item originally uploaded through an app, the app attribution will now be cleared. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Non-Latin characters are now cleanly stripped from uploaded items' titles, as deviation titles still only support latin characters. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When going inside a stack, into an item, and then back to the stack, uploading a file inside the stack would put the file in Sta.sh instead of the stack. Fixed by kouiskas
Sta.sh Writer

  • Thumbnails of literature submitted through Sta.sh Writer appearing in stacks in the Message Center would have misaligned stack corners. Fixed by kemayo
  • Menus in Sta.sh Writer have been changed to be a little more responsive; you can now mouse from one to another without having to click. Fixed by kemayo
  • Classes are now allowed on span tags, for skinning purposes. Fixed by Alisey
  • Efficiency of fetching your Friends List in Sta.sh Writer's sidebar has been improved; less unnecessary data is pulled, and the menu builds faster. Fixed by kemayo and inazar

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update ! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.

  • The most common response regarding the friends system was that deviants would like an easy way to separate lists of who they watch from lists of deviants who are their friends. Dramira-Official mentioned that this could also be applied to the Message Center, where new messages from friends could be listed before the general watch section.
  • lohkk and Yamitora1 suggested that an easy means of managing and organizing one's friendslist would be helpful, and ShapeShifter314 mentioned that being able to search through one's friends list would be useful as well.
  • Some deviants would like stacks within folders in their Message Center. Suggested by Krisoyo
  • A search function in Group galleries would be helpful. Suggested by IcyPheonix
  • Deviants would like notes sent to Groups to be included in their Sent Notes folder. Suggested by alexpeanut and Magical525
  • It would be helpful to be able to add keywords to Groups, so that they can be found more easily when searching in the Groups Portal . Suggested by MartinSilvertant
  • Some members would like to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder. Suggested by Veroom

I just tested the mobile site on my Windows Phone, I really liked it, now I can see all my messages in a proper way. This is exactly what I wanted, good job!!

Indeed needs a little bit of work, it renders a little slow in some parts but overall works great.

I enjoy the new mobile site but I am experiencing trouble with the message center for it.
Every time I try to go to a specific area of the mesqge center, for example my DeviantWATCH, it redirects me to the same spot with all the different catagories of messages.
Tha's the only problem I've had on yhe mobile site so far.

Though I like the idea of being able to manage more stuff on the new mobile site, it still needs a lot of fixes. It looks too cluttered and when I first saw it I thought my browser wasn't loading properly because it didn't look like everything fell into place.

The new mobile version needs a lot of fixes. You can't look at Newest Deviations, fullview doesn't work properly, and some things overlap each other, and look terrible. PLEASE FIX THESE!!!!

I dont like it. Sure, the previous version didnt show all the things in the message center (like polls etc.), but the thing doesnt work and it lags like hell. It's so much slower with loading all pictures etc., and it's not that nice to use. the older one was a lot better.

I was very quick to bitch about the new mobile site, (On twitter of course) and after playing around with it more I found a few changes I had been wanting, so I warmed up to it. I am sure with as often as dA has been tweaking and toying about, anything that changed that really drive users batty will be addressed shortly.

This said I don't have a problem with the change after giving it a solid second look. Hopefully the Beta's will take care of any major issues that might be lurking in the forth coming submission change.

I intensely dislike this new mobile site. The beauty of the old one was that it was made especially for mobile devices, creating a slightly feature-light but extremely accessible experience. This new one just seems like a lazy downscaling of the desktop site, and while I understand why it was done, it isn't especially user-friendly. I'd prefer the option to keep the old mobile site with full knowledge that it won't receive any major updates, rather than be forced to use the new one.

The new submit page... the features seem nice, but I don't like the whole white-backround thing ;-; I liked how the old submit page included the original colors, the white makes it look like we're sending the art to heaven or something instead of dA lol ;w;

dont like the new mobile site its clunky and hard to get around in and when i open a link in a difrent window it sends me to the top of a page and it wont let me read any type of wrighting please make a way to choses the old way i had that one down and this one looks like you tryed to put up to much at once and the mobile just cant handle it. that being said there are 2 good things i do like 1.you can open pics in other windows insted of having to load the pic and then go back to the list of pic again. 2. you can use the watch feater on mobile i dont have to save the profile to my bookmarks and then find the page when on the computer next. but thats it I GIVE THE NEW MOBILE SITE ** 2 STARS OUT OF 5

I don't like the new submit page. It is stash-style and I don't like stash-style (although have more funtionalities the look is horrible). I am a non-premium user so this hopefully won't affect my account ever.

Guys an update on the new mobile:

There are even more reasons to go back to the previous version.

1. Phone gets noticeably hot on the new version of the site with a noticeable battery drain. (10 minutes after a fresh charge and its down 10 percent. With just the new mobile site. Unacceptable guys)

2. The comments are nested because it's just a reformatted normal site version but after more than 3 or so replies you get words and letters cut off so that after a while you get one letter or word replies that take more place vertically but are difficult to read.

3. Most things don't fit the screen, forcing a scroll to see everything. Some galleries show thumbnails side by side and screws up the whole page.

4. Navigating galleries is actually harder. It takes you directly to the features but doesn't show folders easily. Trying to get to other folders got me temporarily back to the previous mobile view but then when trying to get to a new folder, kicked back to the main profile page.

5. Search is still harder to get to and not labeled like it was before. The only way now is to go to browse art and then search and then select newest or whatever you need.

6. 90% of the message center is invisible. You can't see the amount of each section anymore and its hard to get past the first thumbnail and only takes you to the first stack. I realize that this is like the normal site but at least there you can see a few at a time instead of just one person.

This is only the beginning of the problems I've noticed from just using the mobile site in one night. I'm pretty sure this wasn't properly tested or done from a design perspective. This is all on a smartphone but the new design is terrible for a dumbphone or other browsers. Yes some people don't have smartphones. Please go back to the previous mobile version. Most feedback is negative on it.

(And already down another 10% while typing this. That's from 100% to 80% in about 20 minutes from just the mobile site. Unacceptable.)

Another comment I forgot to mention. The new site since it's just a reformatted version of the main site, takes more data then the original mobile site which is causing the slow down. Also in a world where even most smartphones have a data cap, the new mobile site will only take a bigger portion of that data. Again, another thing I don't think was thought out the whole way.

Prints integration on the page is more distracting visual clutter! I will literally stop watching people who include it. Now I won't want to put up printable files myself - it looks terrible. The look is jarring and I will wager the amount of additional sales will be insignificant for the artists. . . of course any additional sales will make dA happier. Just cant squeeze out enough profit.

The DA mobile doesn't seems to work well on a Windows HTC phone :/ as it lags too much. I think there should be an option if you want the old or new DA modile so deviants can pick which one they wants and what works best for them on their phone. Just saying.
