Description This is in good part a test to see how well I can make a tutorial. Considering it's my first one, I'm not assuming that it's great or anything, but hopefully it's at least understandable. I had started one for CGing, but I figured that if I wasn't 100% sure it was going to be informative, I should probably do something shorter first and see what needs to be improved on So yeah, inking tutorial. I'm in no way implying that I'm good at inking on Photoshop, but I think these are pretty basics guides, so anyone who wants to try out PS inking can give it a shot. This is mainly for those who are planning to shade or tone their lineart though, as you can see, I don't do too much line variation or shadows, etc. The colors or tones are what will inforce those.

So yeah, please critique me on things related to the 'TUTORIAL', not my style of drawing lineart, not my lineart drawing technique either. I wanna know if it's understandable, not that you dislike my style. If you dislike it, simple, don't use this.

Alright, I can cross the tutorial off my list, probably do another one on CGing during the summer Although I think a lot of people CG the same way I do and already have stuff posted. We'll see, we'll see. Maybe one on doing that sand in the Gaara fanpic... but I'm starting to forget how I did it... UUUGH.

Uuuuuh, here's a bigger version of the finished pic: [link]

I've tried my hand at this form of inking in the past and had some good results, the only thing that bothered me was how long it took to finish a picture this way. But I guess you get faster the more you do it.

This tutorial was a good reminder of some of the functions of the tools and some weight techniques.

Can that be any Photoshop? Or does it have to be a specific one? (I have Photoshop Elements 3)
Your line art is great! Keep up the good work! (^.^X)

This is really a great tutorial...i have been wishing to get into photoshop for digital inking for a while, i know how to do the basics, but this helped me out a lot.

You put a lot of detail, and made it understandable so that even a person like me could understand >_<

Thanx...

The Pen tool seemed really complicated at first, but once you know the basis and the shortcuts, it gets to be a very simple and convenient tool!

I'm glad this tutorial helped you, have fun inking!

I'm gonna hop off and try out your advice. Colouring and line work are the bane of my existence. Kinda takes all the fun out of drawing when I have to go through such hell to finish off the pic's. I've pretty much sorted out most of the colouring angle but the line work is turning into a real nightmare. Hope this works, I'll let you know. Many thanks for all your work and sharing.

You can actually use the vector technique for cel-shade coloring. It's basically the same method I'll be waiting for your results!

heyz, how many differnt paths did you end up with on here. I'm just starting to use them and I'm probably going to end up with like a million for all of the separate lines like the face/chin, hair, clothing folds. I'm wondering how I can minimizing the # of paths so my compy doesn't fry.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ikeda In reply to astarael22 [2006-08-26 02:07:33 +0000 UTC]

In the Gaara ink file, I had maybe 10-15 path layers at most. However, I don't think there is a "Merge Paths" option. Paths themselves barely take any space, so they shouldn't affect your computer speed: a 500*500 pixel file with 2 path layers - one path each - is only 44kb. (It's when you draw them out with the "Stroke Path" option that the file size starts to grow, but that happens on the layers)

If you would like to minimize your number of path layers, draw unconnected or untwined paths on the same p-layer. For instance instead of making 10 clothing path layers, make two or three and switch from one to the next for things that are closer. In my case, I make one p-layer called "skin" and put all skin elements (like arms and legs if they're bare) on it.

Hope that helps

thanks a bunch! ^ ^ I'm finally getting into paths on Photoshop. I only have photoshop 7, so I'm not too savy. Thank you very much. ^^ And your tutorial helped a lot. I'm finding that doing the paths takes a lot of time, but I'm willing. I'll get my deviation up soon. Byez. XD

I think I'm going to try this one, I liked your explanations of the paths tool, it was probably the most straightforward and understandable version I've ever read.
I think you could be very good at tutorials, considering this is a first, and is so easy to understand and follow and doesn't leave the reader feeling like an idiot.

The main focus of this tutorial, for me, is on the step 4 of the second part. you described it well, but used a lot of technical terms that people unused to this tool might not comprehend. (I assumed the tutorial was for people not used to the pen tool as you do a thorough step-by-step and introduce it and all). If indeed it is for begginners, you may want to simplify that section a bit, IMO.

On a more technical point of view on the tutorial itself, I think it's pretty well done. The illustrations are usefull and the general disposition is good. If the tutorial really is for beginners, an added image to show where to find the path sheet might be an appropriate addition to the layer tab you've already shown, just incase. Also, the second part of the tutorial is 11 steps long, while the 11th is rather a Conclusion/note then a real step. But truly, those are nit-picks. I think you have done well and that it could help people. Good job

nice tutorial. that's kind of what I do when I'm inking; except, I just use one of the default brushes. I'll have to try your method, though. it looks like the drawing comes out a lot better. XD

Wow, first to comment. Thats a good tutorial Ikeda. I really appreciate the fact that you went into spesifices (sorry I dont know how to spell that.) It was great that you showed a screen of the brush pallete just in case, and you are good at painting in PS, so those who know your artwork, will agree that it was great (and others) that you shared your secrets (well maybe not secrets but I think you get what Im saying) and showed us how to paint. This is a great first tutorial, so dont degrade it!
Im definitly going to try and paint now, thanks for the inspiration. Im always chicken to pain in PS, so thanks.
