Description The only reason Team Epsilon of the Stellar Navy's Special Operations Assault and Reconnaissance (SOAR) division isn't the most decorated unit in the service is because virtually none of its missions ever officially happened. Specializing in "extraterritorial" operations, SOAR Team Epsilon's missions often must be denied for political expedience.
This team is where Shiva Reece, future captain of the "Hard Bargain" cut her teeth, developed her empathic abilities and, ultimately, experienced things that led her to not just quit the service, but leave the Terran Protectorate entirely for the anonymity and lawlessness of the Free Colonies.
All SOAR teams are unique among historic special forces units because all of their members are officers. This is because they are all trained fighter pilots who are rated at least double ace (10 kills). Besides being a superb fighter pilot, each member also has at least one other specialty, be it close quarters combat, heavy weapons, communications or psychic abilities. Teams are balanced based on these specialties so that they are able to handle any situation. Most SOAR teams have 12 members, a typical fighter squadron, divided into two flights of six. Team Epsilon's two flights are code-named Spear and Hammer. Spear is recon-focused, conducts the initial probing thrust, assesses the situation and if possible, goes for a quick kill. Hammer obliterates hard targets and specializes in heavy combat. If you've done something that draws the entire squadron down on you, there's little to do but hope they give you the option to surrender.
Spear Flight is pictured here.

Now THIS is what I wish I had been reading about during my teen years instead of the X-wing series. Are the psychic abilities based on speculative future biological abilities or is it more of a mystical fantasy kind of thing?

Somewhere in between. Shiva, the main character in my graphic novel, is an empath (think Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation) who applies those abilities to combat...anticipating an opponent's attacks, "pushing" them emotionally in one direction or another, and she is also like a psychic bloodhound, able to detect life all around her as well as its intentions, and track someone by their psychic fingerprint. Her power grows over time. Some psychics, particularly telekinetics, have abilities that are more spectacular and some races, like the Nix have taken those psychic abilities and added mysticism and made them a heavy part of their culture.
