Description FIRST OFF: BE GENTLE, I know its not the best design nor can it be fully understood within the pages here of how it was developed - these are to represent the finished end result, most of the concept sketches were lost or trashed. It has a very "modern" aesthetic, all the fairly clean lines and glass - but I am sure you can see this is me struggling to find my 'own'.
*I am not going to go into much detail about the requirements of the project, but rather a basic overview of the process.

The project was for a UNICEF Building in Boston, located right off a central part of the "Big Dig". It was a half-semester project, so it was done fairly quickly. This was my first substantial project involving anything at the "skyscraper" level... so if you see any degree of confusion in the design, its probably due to this. I've included this project in my portfolio, not for its design merits but rather as it signifies a tangible stepping stone for me - a milestone in my personal design career. It was done in my first semester of my third year - which at my university in my honest opinion the first year you are really asked to 'design' and meet program requirements and such.

Project was drawn on 24x30 sheets of vellum with graphite (something I haven't done in awhile) - this would be one the one of last projects I technically hand-drafted completely, as most future projects would involve the computer at one stage or another. Yet another reason to include it in my portfolio, an example of my handdrafting. For the portfolio, they were scanned in on a flatbed and then reduced to include in the portfolio - therefore scales may be vary/skewed.

At of any of the projects I ever pulled "all-nighters" for, this is one I remember vividly - my back aching from leaning over a light table for 3 solid days, and then waking up with graphite smeared on my faces after collapsing into one of my drawings. You know how hard it is not to freakin' smear graphite, or keep drawings clean? Eh, from this point on, I swore pretty much to sketch/draw in ink although from time to time I will pick up a soft lead pencil and really abstract a sketch.

*This is a portfolio page layout, 8.5x11 of my OLD port design. Not updated probably because it will no longer be included.

Thanks very much... nice to see people still enjoying the "done by hand" work, considering everything we see is all computer nowadays.

have been waiting for a time when i could properly sit down and look at this one.
I really like it, the angles on the tallest structure are nice n edgy but without going overboard. And the various structures connecting remind me of this video I saw of a lecture given by the designer of a very inspiring library, the link is here [link]
Definitely worth a watch unless youve already seen it

Very nice looking building for sure, Id build my HQ in there

hehe, thx for the comment man... finally had time to get around to going through the damn inbox. I know what library your talking about - I've actually been there. Its by Rem Koolhaus and its in downtown Seattle, WA. Great library, completely different feeling you get in there then in normal libraries that for sure. Thx again, I really appreciate it!

You crit me, I crit you lol. I've seen lots of your work and this is one of the most...safe designs is one way of putting it. Don't take offense to that comment, its still amazing work and has some real high level of detailing to it. I guess if I got a better understanding of why the design came out this way, it would make it a bit easier. As hand drawings go they are gorgeous but this is definitely one of those rare moments where I say the use of a comp could have helped. Renders would have been useful to get more feeling of spaces. I'm guilty of not doing them as well so hey lol. We all do it. Its nice work overall.

yeah, I totally hear ya wide and clear about the design - it was my first high-rise building so I really didn't know the first thing about designing one. It was a requirement to hand draw, but I really wish I could have done even some of the perspectives on the computer to find better angles. Rendering some of the interior moments would have helped as well. Thx for the crit, I really appreciate it

well good job on this project! i think it will look good in your portfolio
and congrats on the hard work, i know "all-niters" can be very hard.. and well, especialy when you're working with graphite and trying to get a clean image

Yeah bro, those drawings are smooth, and the layout is very clean.
Haha, yeah, graphite must have given you a hard time. rapidograph pens rule.
I think i remember this project, and you leaving for studio for days, lol.
