Description
Hey! So, I've been at uni. Why didn't anyone tell me how much time it takes up?! I'm already crappy at time management. Anyway, this is me poking my head out of the woodwork to offer up a bit of a practice painting I did in preparation for my major painting work this semester. Because I couldn't actually just paint Robert Downey Jr as my major work, much as I'd like to... they want, like... thoughtfulness and conceptual stuff (my brain hurts). But for the support work it's more about technique so, yay! Familiar territory!Still, this is the first acrylic painting I've done in over 6 years so I'm kind of rusty, just getting the hang of using something not digital. But it's so cool (and I'm going to sound like an absolute art n00b here) because I learned how to mix the black paint from red/blue/yellow >_> and I thought that was the coolest thing ever. It's actually on just a little canvas, cheap-o paints and whatnot because I'm paranoid about wasting that darn expensive paint.
And yes, I know my signature looks really lame. I need to practice actually signing with a paintbrush >_>
Wish me luck everybody, major painting work is gonna kick my butt I think!

wow, you have got real skill with the brush! love how you made it so lifelike but only used a few colours,
looks really unique and beautiful.
sort of thing you would see on the cover of a magazine in which he is interwieved.
very well done!

I recently got back into painting as well. Β I think it looks pretty great, especially for you not painting for so long! Β Have you ever tried working in oils? Β I just tried them for the first time last year and absolutely loved them.Β

The style you used makes it feel more real, even if it doesn't look as photorealistic for it. So great!

This is the first acrylic painting you've done in 6 years, and you think you're rusty?? If this is you being rusty, I can't imagine how amazing your future paintings are gonna look. This is already amazing to me

Thank you so much! I admit towards the end of finishing it I was feeling much more comfortable --- I think the hardest part was knowing where/how to begin and how to control the brushes! both eerily like and unlike painting in photoshop hahaha but I got there in the end! Thanks again, it means a lot

I hear ya. The beginning is always the hardest part. That's where all the uncertainties creep in and corrupt your state of mind. Glad you pulled through and ended up with this awesome piece. Keep it up

I love how this turned out! My painting courses in college taught me so much useful stuff about color and technique, it sounds like your courses are definitely on the right track with showing how to mix your own black. I haven't used black out of the tube for three years, since I saw the beautiful rich difference that mixed black makes.
Anyway, great job on this piece! I love RDJ and this is a great portrait.

Isn't it amazing, mixing your own black -- I had absolutely no idea before this, but it really does give a richness doesn't it? I don't think I could go back to out of the tube either. And thank you so much!
