Description
I had an idea a week ago for something so I decided to do environmental concept art for it. I'm not really good at doing backgrounds either so I thought it would be good practice at least. I don't know if I'll go through with doing it but yeeeah. If I do I'll post more about it. For now this is a practice if anything.Related content

Backgrounds are notoriously difficult and tedious, so that's really smart to do an environmental piece. I think the soft lighting and warm, minimal lineart give it a storybook air. I could see this in a children's book or as concept art for a game. The shaft of light around the ax is lovely and warm, butΒ a little spotty. I would suggest doing it as a solid gradient to make it more stylized. If you were trying to go for the light being disrupted by the trees, instead of big spots and blobs it should be more straight and verticleΒ www.google.com/search?q=sunbeaβ¦:. Notice how the shafts of light are alternated by shafts of shadow? References are important. It's still a good effect, it just could have been stronger. I also like the detail of the leaves falling down towards the ax. It breaks up the negative space of the shaft of light, gives the piece more life (looking more like a forest) while also drawing the eye towards the ax. I would suggest having more variety in the leaf placement to make it look more random and naturalΒ www.google.com/search?biw=1366β¦:Β . It's good that you didn't use too many and distract us with the leaves, but they do seem like it's few leaves and while i see with the leaves you're doing a zig zag pattern, the two sunspecks are vertically alligned and make it look a little forced.Β
I like the two bushes framing the ax, especially the stylized texture on the one on the right. It has a good mix of chunky shading and minimal lineart while also giving it a painterly look. I think the one on the right and the trees on either side of the picture could do with more detail. The rocks are also very smooth, and I think you could have given them some simple texture, enough the make the environment more interesting but not too realistic.
The branches on the trees are hidden in the shadow, so it's hard to see their silhouettes. When working with silhouettes it's important to simplify and clarify the shapes to make it more obvious what the object is.Β
The lineart on the ax is good and has a nice amount of variation between thick and thin lines. The painting on the handle to give it a wood texture is a good idea. It just should have been split up more to make it look less like two separate colors of wood and give it mor eof a grainy texture. I like the scrap of cloth with the bunny on it. The ax highlighted in a shaft of light is interesting enough, but the cloth around the handle suggests a story of who owned the ax and what they did with it. The lineart on the cloth is a little too chunky, I think you could have thinned it out a bit.
I also like the texture of the dirt the ax is buried in. The atmospheric lighting on the rocks and sand, how it gets the green light reflected off it is really good. I also like how the grass is shaded in chunks, going from light to dark.
Overall it's a good piece and effectively teases a story without any characters. Really effective.

Wow. This is pretty well done. The light shining down from above, the abandoned axe, and even that falling leaf that I can see in the background, it conveys quite the emotional atmosphere of abandonment.
Somehow, this reminds me of this old story about a man who lived on a farm. One day, he struck a tree with his scythe, leaving it there. He told his parents, and i quote "I'm going to join the army. Leave my scythe hanging in the tree until I get back." Alas, he never returned. But his parents left the scythe there, just as he asked. Time passed. The handle rotted away, and the tree grew around the scythe. It became a part of the tree's inside, up to the day of the tree's death.
I'm sorry for bringing up such a change of topic. This picture just reminds me of that story so well...

Woah, that's so deep, I love your insight on my picture. I've never heard of that story before but I can how you were reminded of it. Would it be cool if you told me the name of that old story, would love to read it.

Unfortunately, I don't remember the name. It's a short story I read as a kid, and I haven't the foggiest idea on the title.
But I know at the end, the scythe is displayed in this little case with the story, titling it "The man who never returned." That's probably not the name of the short story, but it's all i can give to help you find it.

I really like the composition and the idea , lighting creates a got atmosphere but I think it would look better if there were more "directed light" if that makes sense? like sun rays, like this it looks maybe a bit too blurry and you have so many details you could do with rays! it would look more natural, you can add little flying specks of dust and other particles in the area of the sun ray and between sun rays it would be a bit darker creating a bit more contrast~Β
all in all it looks good but this is how you could spice it up a bit~

ImaniAsh In reply to Diianya [2019-08-15 17:35:35 +0000 UTC]
Yeah you're right about light ray being pretty blurry. It's my first time messing with making a fixed light source like this on a small environment so it was throwing me off. I don't have much practice with stuff like this. Thanks for the criticism though. I'll keep it in mind if I do a drawing similar to this again.

I'm not much experienced with drawing light like that but it's just my speculation from other works ^^ but I bet you will do even better on the next one~

The lighting is so fluffy and on point, it helps to narrow down what you should be seeing. But since the light is coming from above, maybe the axe would cast a shadow. Other than that, it's really good.Β

ImaniAsh In reply to Haireo [2019-08-15 18:20:15 +0000 UTC]
Oh yeah, your right. I didn't cast too much of a shadow for the axe ,oops. I was pretty focused on lighting so the shading was a bit second thought. I'll remember that next time. Thanks though!

I really love this. Especially how you made the sand lean up against the blade
of the axe. And the way you made the light look like a spotlight on the axe.
Nice job.Β

Yeah drawing the axe in the sand was my favorite thing to draw in this. Close second was doing the lil rocks and grass.
