ImdaBatman β€” SPOILER ALERT FOR IRON MAN 3!!!

Description Let me tell you a story about a boy who once saw Tim Burton's "Batman" on cable in, 2008, I think. It was the scene in the church where Batman and Joker were about to face off. The boy was so excited. The film had been building up to a dramatic confrontation to the two arch-enemies, and now it looked like they were about to settle it once and for all in good old-fashioned fisticuffs.

Then the Joker practically broke his hand punching Batman in THAT GODDAMN RUBBER ARMOR!

You see, as the boy soon learned, though some version of the Joker were portrayed as a capable fighter and a physical match for Batman, VERY few writers (or fans) were actually aware of this. As such, Joker had built up a reputation as a very poor fighter. And frankly, the boy thought it was the biggest disappointment in a superhero movie he would ever see.

And then that boy saw "Iron Man 3". And, to put it lightly, I was very, VERY wrong.

Plot twist, SHLOT TWIST! You don't spent all those trailers building up to a movie where, after starring and guest-starring in three other movies, (and even a cameo at the end of another) Iron Man FINALLY takes on his classic arch-nemesis, only for him to be A FUCKING ACTOR HIRED TO BE A RED FUCKING HERRING!!! Nobody gives a fuck if "it seems racist to have a Chinese bad guy". (He wasn't even Chinese in this movie) WAY more people (myself included) are more concerned about being respectful to the source material it all originated from.

At least "Barakapool" has the excuse of being created by FOX, a studio that has f*cked up on the X-Men before. But how, I ask you, could the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE that we've all come to love and trust, that we have all put our faith in, flop this majorly?! I could deal with how much I missed Tony having a secret identity. But THIS? A lot of people give "Man of Steel" sh*t, (note to self: make a separate demotivational about that at a later date) but even if General Zod never said "kneel before Zod", (literally an essential part of his character) at least HE was actually a decent villain!

Rant over.

Disclaimer: Iron Man owned by Marvel. Batman owned by DC. (Though at this point, it's questionable as to whether they even deserve them anymore)

"It seems racist to have a Chinese bad guy"??

What the hell is racist about that?! It all comes down to the portrayal. If he's portrayed like the japanese where in the Fleischer Superman cartoons (or Breakfeast at Tiffanies) then yes, but otherwise nope. I really don't get that. No black, asian or otherwise minority villains out of fear of backlash. This actually seems even more racist to me. "Oh, this villain is cruel, intelligent and intriguing... but he's black. We have to change that for our adaptation." So basicly studios deny that being a minority doesnt equals entirely good. And if you have a minority villain in a movie its usually a very very klischeΓ© heavy black gangster, an japanese Yakuza who doesn't stop talking about honor and so on.

I just think its pretty annoying and Iron Man 3 is just the peak of the iceberg. If anything having minority villains enriches a movies universe and makes it seem more diverse.

i remember in the origin that i once heard for the mandarin that he was an english explorer who was possessed by an ancient spirit or something.

ImdaBatman In reply to Jack-Walter-Darko [2014-03-07 01:30:09 +0000 UTC]

That's only in the cartoon. In the comics he was the decedent of Genghis Khan, son of one of the wealthiest man in China and an English noblewoman who was orphaned at a very young age and raised by his aunt, (who he got his bitter attitude from) who spent the rest of the family fortune on educating both his mind and body in science and combat, sending him to the finest boarding schools. By the time he reached adulthood, he was broke and was evicted. Looking for a means of revenge against the civilization that took his home, he went into the forbidden Valley of Spirits and found a crashed Makulan spaceship with 10 rings. So he became a conqueror.

...Of corse, I have this one comic that retcons that he used his rings to alter his own memories a little. The comic establishes that his mother was a prostitute, the Mandarin was already a powerful underworld figure before finding the rings, and the spaceship's pilot was still alive and Mandarin killed him.

Just because Trevor Slattery wasn't the Mandarin doesn't mean there is no Mandarin. Β I firmly believe that either one: Mandarin pulled a fast one on Tony and got away with minimum security prison, oooooor the real guy is still out there. Β After all, Ten Rings was a real terror organization, not a puppet for Killian. Β That must mean there is someone real behind it. Β

ImdaBatman In reply to tigerfangart [2014-02-11 03:18:26 +0000 UTC]

You make an excellent point. In fact, a Marvel One-Shot recently retconned it so that there is a real Mandarin running the Ten Rings, who's pissed off about Trevor ruining his image.

...Still, it was a stupid twist.

tigerfangart In reply to ImdaBatman [2014-02-11 06:46:49 +0000 UTC]

I feel it was executed well. Β It could have been terrible, but excellent actors and the general vagueness of the whole thing sold it, at least for me.

ImdaBatman In reply to tigerfangart [2014-02-13 11:59:24 +0000 UTC]

Okay, you have a point. I guess I would have liked it better if the real villain a) wasn't seeking revenge for a 13-year-old prank and b) didn't get killed by a love interest who was never in a fight before.

*sigh*
I too was disappointed with how they handled The Mandarin, even though I don't care about the character at all, but just wanted a good challenge for Tony to go up against with.
Instead, we got Guy Peirce blowing fire from his ass.

This is from a conversation I had with regarding this topic:

Here's how I would have done it: the Mandarin was born in Britain, but raised in China, then immigrated back to Britain. He then went over to Afghanistan where he formed and led the Ten Rings. After the events of the first two Iron Man movies, he went into hiding until the events of Marvel's The Avengers. When the invasion was stopped, some of the alien ships crashed near his hiding spot. Gathering what was left of his organization, he carried off the technology and studied and tinkered with it. Eventually, he was able to siphon off the alien tech power into his ten rings, with the goal of slowly absorbing the energy and learning to harness it, resulting in his ability to cause attacks from great distances. He would manipulate Kilrich into creating Extremis to control the power. When Iron Man exposes Kilrich to Mandrin's true nature and what his work has been used for, Kilrich would breakdown and kill himself. When confronted by Iron Man, Mandarin would absorb all the energy captured in his ten rings and turning into a fearsome dragon-like creature.

Mandarin in trailers was awesome. I didn't care that he had no magic rings or that he wasn't Asian. I was okay of him being an intimidating terrorist leader who can make horrible shit happen and challenge Tony Stark mentally. Besides wasn't destroying west one of Mandarin's original motivations in comics anyway? Seemed like a pretty good update of the character to fit in movie universe.

Shit, what a waste of good villain and a great actor. If that wasn't bad enough the real villain turns out to be this not-intimidating douche who is mad at Tony for not giving him a time of day way back when. Wow, for a villain who can make all that stuff happen we saw in the movie that was a pretty lame motivation.

So we have Dr. Doom, Deadpool and Mandarin here. Which Marvel character is going to be completely f*cked up next?

I didn't mind either, but I'm so outraged by the film I'm demanding that Marvel retcon the bad guys in IM3 into working for an Asian, alien ring-wearing, full comics badass Mandarin!

And Galactus. Don't forget Galactus.
