Description Let me tell you a story about a boy who once saw Tim Burton's "Batman" on cable in, 2008, I think. It was the scene in the church where Batman and Joker were about to face off. The boy was so excited. The film had been building up to a dramatic confrontation to the two arch-enemies, and now it looked like they were about to settle it once and for all in good old-fashioned fisticuffs.

Then the Joker practically broke his hand punching Batman in THAT GODDAMN RUBBER ARMOR!

You see, as the boy soon learned, though some version of the Joker were portrayed as a capable fighter and a physical match for Batman, VERY few writers (or fans) were actually aware of this. As such, Joker had built up a reputation as a very poor fighter. And frankly, the boy thought it was the biggest disappointment in a superhero movie he would ever see.

And then that boy saw "Iron Man 3". And, to put it lightly, I was very, VERY wrong.

Plot twist, SHLOT TWIST! You don't spent all those trailers building up to a movie where, after starring and guest-starring in three other movies, (and even a cameo at the end of another) Iron Man FINALLY takes on his classic arch-nemesis, only for him to be A FUCKING ACTOR HIRED TO BE A RED FUCKING HERRING!!! Nobody gives a fuck if "it seems racist to have a Chinese bad guy". (He wasn't even Chinese in this movie) WAY more people (myself included) are more concerned about being respectful to the source material it all originated from.

At least "Barakapool" has the excuse of being created by FOX, a studio that has f*cked up on the X-Men before. But how, I ask you, could the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE that we've all come to love and trust, that we have all put our faith in, flop this majorly?! I could deal with how much I missed Tony having a secret identity. But THIS? A lot of people give "Man of Steel" sh*t, (note to self: make a separate demotivational about that at a later date) but even if General Zod never said "kneel before Zod", (literally an essential part of his character) at least HE was actually a decent villain!

Rant over.

Disclaimer: Iron Man owned by Marvel. Batman owned by DC. (Though at this point, it's questionable as to whether they even deserve them anymore)

Okay, they took away him being Chinese in favor of being a weird combination of different cultures he twist around for his motivation, but was that not enough?!

Yes, exactly! I could deal with him going from "superpowered rings" to "terrorist leader", but this is just too far.

Wait a second how would it have pissed of the Chinese if the Mandarin had been ASIAN? Sure he's supposed to be the bad guy, but he's an AWESOME bad guy! Even Tony respects him! He's intelligent, cunning, inventive, powerful, passionate, and even downright honorable sometimes! In a different world he might have been as good a hero as Iron Man! Maybe even better! All they had to do was give his a strong portrayal instead of making him a top-hat-wearing villain and it wouldn't have been so bad for ANYONE! Even the Chinese! Maybe the movie goes like this: Tony takes on the Mandarin and fails so badly to beat him the Mandarin actually let's him go! Then Tony fights him again but this time he's ready but instead of him just dying outright, it's heavily implied that The Mandarin actually survives somehow as he realizes that him and Tony are in a sense brothers who are destined to fight or "test" each other! I know that sounds a bit contrived but it's better than insinuating that The Mandarin (And by extension ALL Asian people!) are just plain evil for the sake of it! Who knows? If it weren't for his ruthlessness and arrogance The Mandarin could have become one of Tony's friends!

Same reason Kingpin wasn't always black since Stan Lee first created him (instead of just the movie version). Apparently, according to Lee's editor at the time and Marvel Studios, thinking that non-white people can also be supervillains is somehow racist. Literally the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

And yes, that would have been a MUCH better movie.

Here's an idea : What if in a reboot, The Mandarin ended up redeeming himself as a means to satisfy Chinese audiences?

Or, maybe the real Mandarin was manipulating it all from behind the scenes!

They were just to scared-shitless of pissing China off.

Another thing that pisses me off is that Tony barely did anything in the Iron suit and in the end, his girlfriend had to kick all the ass!

Name this book: "instead of multi-cultural, we have no-cultural"

Yeah. And people give IM2 crap for lack of armored scenes. Plus, they were too vague as to if he actually retired.

I liked Iron Man 3, but I was let down by the twist with the Mandarin. For me, I didn't care if he wasn't completely chinese or didn't have magic from his rings. To me I thought he was mixed race like Sir Kingsley himself, but again didn't matter to me. What bothered me was all the buildup and presence that was made with this character was literally thrown aside and made me go "What... who's this?! You kidding me?" when the twist was revealed. I think a vlogger once commented it's like watching Dark Knight and finding out the Joker was just some basement-dwelling stoner hired to put on an act to scare Batman for Salvatore Maroni.

In his viral videos, he was absolutely terrifying. Everything about this guy seemed a real and frightening threat to Tony and the country in general. Not to mention he's meant as the leader of the same organization that nabbed him in the first one. He had the self-righteous and ferocious nature of a terrorist leader or some tyrannical dictator, and a menacing yet charismatic tone to him and much like Tony himself showed a knack for flashy displays of grandeur, and I was looking forward to seeing Tony face this guy and bring the events of the trilogy full-circle. All of that was ruined when he was revealed to be a fake(and basically a comic relief gag) and the big bad was just some guy who was pissed at Tony for standing him up at a party years ago. It would have been better if the Mandarin was everything he was initially played up as before the reveal, with Killian as his lackey, and perhaps in the final fight he has the Extremis powers to compensate for not having magic rings or such, but that's just me.

I didn't mind either, but I'm so outraged by the film I'm demanding that Marvel retcon the bad guys in IM3 into working for an Asian, alien ring-wearing, full comics badass Mandarin!

Not to mention the wasted opportunity of the whole "the guys who kidnapped you in the first movie worked for me" reveal. What's worse, freaking PEPPER was the one who beat the real bad guy!!!

GothamScarecrow In reply to ImdaBatman [2013-12-29 00:09:11 +0000 UTC]

LOL I'm sure it's entirely unrelated. To my understanding the rumor is it's a 'retcon' of sorts that Trevor and Killian were both working under the REAL Mandarin. Or some such. Either way it'd retcon Killian as the Mandarin.

Thank Kirby. (Or, in this case, Don Heck) I hope the real Mandarin owns Killian like a boss. (A 13-year-old prank? They call that motivation? Magneto was in the fucking holocaust!)

GothamScarecrow In reply to ImdaBatman [2013-12-31 09:17:37 +0000 UTC]

Tell me about it. It made him petty and immature. And his ultimate evil plan? Steal Tony's girlfriend and shame him. Killian would have worked fine as the henchman, but not as the big bad.

ImdaBatman In reply to GothamScarecrow [2013-12-31 21:27:43 +0000 UTC]

And he got his ass kicked by Pepper, who had no experience in combat whatsoever. The movie looked so much less-suckish when it looked like Killian was just Mandarin's #2.

GothamScarecrow In reply to ImdaBatman [2013-12-31 21:54:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, first half of the movie was actually pretty good... then came poorly-conceived plot twists in the name of social-political commentary.

"Thing about the movie's villain... the one we thought it was looks interesting, he sounds interesting... but it was actually just another corrupt american industrialist... this is why the movie is... hollow... full of lies... and leaves a bad taste in the mouth."

ImdaBatman In reply to GothamScarecrow [2014-01-01 12:03:19 +0000 UTC]

My problems with the movie involved how pathetic the new suit was and Tony's little wearing of it, the all-to-quick dropping of and waste of the panic attack subplot, and the poor after-credits scene.

I doubt that. There's always Eddie Brock in the black Spiderman costume (or as he should've been called: Venom).

They didn't screw Venom himself up so much as they did under-use him. (I checked. He literally had less than 5 minutes of screen time) Besides, hopefully the reboots will redeem him.

Well. I feel like sharing this post for you. To be honest, my reactions were mixed...i mean, Killian was not a bad oponent but part of me wanted to see the man on the coat and with the rings. On the other hand, Kingsley was amusing enough to make me not too mad at the twist. And....while i did not saw all the marvel movies...the ruined detail that i still feel like the worst is......galactus in the movie of the fantastic four and silver surfer...but thats just me if you disagree, is ok.

Of coarse it's not the only version. Just the best one that we all know.

Galactus. One of the good things about the FF getting rebooted.

Well...to be honest the one thing i liked more about mandarin was concept, and i wasnt too attached the character so....i guess thats why i got not so dissapointed...but i still prefer the masterminds in robes over the suit ones.
And a reboot, eh?. I just hope that Galactus appears as a friggin planet eater and not as a clouid...seriously...that feels too cheap, cheap for non comic book fans and for comic book fans..a nasty move.

There have been greater flops in comic book movies. Like reducing Lex Luthor to a real estate shark.

Agreed. And did you ever notice how Thing did absolutely no ass-kicking in the second one? Anyway, here's what I think: imdabatman.deviantart.com/art/...

If FOX just admitted that they have no idea what they're doing and gave Marvel back their rights to...on second thought, after Iron Man 3 and what I'm hearing for Avengers 2, I don't know what to think anymore.

Trilogy. Nice. Great reference. I just don't see how the whole thing could be spread across 6-9 hours.

Well...the reviewer i saw, cnosidered a movie would not be enough.

And...I know Iron man 3 was at least for me not so bad, is obvious than mistakes happen and the deal of the avengers 2 depends also of the other movies......tough the one that got me a bit intrigued of all was the guardians of the galaxy, specially the deal of Rocket Raccoon.

Well if you disagree with what i think is ok, everybody has different toughts.

While the comic book fan (not fanboy) in me wanted to see the Mandarin on the big screen after hearing how good he was in the comics, the other part of me really liked the twist and felt that it made sense with the themes going on.

Just my 2 cents on it.
