Description The first dragon I created back in 2014, and the first dragon to join my fantasy world "Demaris". The Lightning Surfer was previously named "Spyrogia" but due to fears of getting copyrighted because of the name, I changed the species' name to fit it's elemental ability.

This is a summary explaining most, if not all of what the species is about and has to offer. This base is for you to use, but please follow these rules.
  • Credit me if used.
  • You are not allowed to make Adopts out of them. As long there are no baby or egg base, I will not allow adoption.
  • Do not, and I am serious, DO NOT claim the base NOR the species as your own. This is highly disrespectful, you wouldn't like if someone stole your art, right?
  • You cannot change the ELEMENT of a Lightning Surfer. Their name gives the hint. However you are allowed to make a custom electricity color. There are other Elemental Surfers such as Water Surfers, Fire Surfers and more, and these will indeed have their own bases in the future.
  • Please remove the markings on the base, these are just for example.
  • Please change the colors at least. I've seen people using previous bases of mine claiming them as their OCs, such as my Light Gripper, Shymera. I don't care if you use the same name as my OCs, just make sure they're not total rip-off of the Originals.
  • DO NOT include my characters in your OC(s) stories without my consent! If your character does not share any background story with my characters, then don't bother, it will not be classified as Canon!
  • These are MSPaint friendly, and do not have a Transparent background.

Okiedokie, that's enough explanation, here comes the species' Info!

Information
The Lightning Surfer is one of the rarest dragon in Demaris. One of the largest species known. They are highly respected by people, by fear they might take their home if not careful. We also call them the Masters of the Skies, simply due to their ability to ride and air current and fly with great agility despite their size. Their rareness may be explained by two things. One being dragon hunters, who kill these beasts for their skin and forehead crystal, or use them in fights and wars by forcing them to obey since young age. The other one may be because of their territorial temperament, males like females can fight for territories, sometimes ending in one's death, or both. Although this is now rare due to the species' rareness, it is not preferred to stay in their way when a fight is happening between these powerful creatures.
We call them Lightning Surfers due to their ability to ride lightning and conduct it. Some of their scales have a semi-metallic aspect to them, which attract lightning to strike them. This does not hurt the Lightning Surfer whatsoever, and they use this ability to store electricity in their horns, dorsal and tail spikes as well as their feathers. All that in case they ever need to fight or defend themselves. The more electricity charged, the brighter their markings get, that is if they have some. They can also use this electricity as their breath attack, and it is devastating, which is a main reason why they are so respected. Not only are they strong but an angry Lightning Surfer can destroy any village in minutes.

Physical Appearance
Male
The males Lightning Surfers are the same size as the females, but slightly muscular. They have bigger wings but slightly smaller tail fins. They also have larger teeth and spikes on their belly plates. Those spikes are what attract females during mating season, the bigger the better. They also have more jaw spikes and a "skin beard", which females don't have. Also having thin spikes on their legs, they are sometimes irritating when sitting or lying down...
Males are also more dull in color and more on the grey-ish color side while keeping a bit of bright colors on them.

Female
The females Lightning Surfers are more thin than males, and their bodies are made to move around freely. They have smaller wings but bigger tail fins. Small teeth unlike the males, and are missing belly spikes and extra jaw spikes as well as the skin beard. Females also do not possess thin spikes on their legs, which is somewhat good since they do not have to worry about being itchy!
Females are more bright in colors, sometimes showing pretty color combinations such as pastel colors!

Both
Both male and female have four front fingers, and three toes. They also have the same amount of back spikes and horns, as well as the same amount of teeth and Head "fins".
Male and female can also share similar color palettes due to certain genetic mutations, so a male can have bright color and a female can have dull colors, however such an event like this is rare.

Habitat
Lightning Surfers are all around the world of Demaris, taking territories ar their own. However you would most likely find them near the Thundering Peaks during Summer season for well, obvious reasons due the place's name. The Thundering Peaks are the only places where Lightning Surfers do not fight for territory, and likely all hang out in the same area. Outside of the Thundering Peaks, Lightning Surfers are originally found in mountains, forests and even sometimes beaches' caves! Some tend to chose crystal caves as their home, but those are rare and only two were recorded to live in crystal caves as of today.

Behavior and Personality
Lightning Surfers are known to be territorial, and it happens that two of the same species fight to the death for one territory, defending it or to claim it. Sometimes it can be because of the food, or because it is a good nesting place or home. Male Lightning Surfers are fortunately more calm and reserved than females, and do not attack intruders if they do not see them as threats. They can examine the intruder, and if they show any threats or are damaging their territories, then yes, they will protect it.
However if two male Lightning Surfers meet, they will likely fight for territory. The winner keeps the territory, while the other one leaves or dies depending on the severity of the wounds. It may happen both males die if they manage to wound the opposing one fatally. If a male meets a female however, and doesn't already have a female, it will try to attract the female to become it's lifetime mate. The male has to be careful, because the female is much more aggressive and wouldn't hesitate to attack if the male is not properly presenting himself as "non-threat". The male bows down but keeps it's neck and head up in the air and coos lightly. The female inspect it's chest spikes, and the bigger they are, the stronger the male is. If a male does not get the female's approval, she leaves the territory, and the male has to try again another time. If a male is successful and gets the approval of the female, it may immediately mate with the female to create their lifetime bond and future clutches.

Females are more aggressive and territorial than males, and may attack anything that comes in their territory, even males looking for a mate! Females never go out of their territory unless they are looking for a partner, which will happen once in their life. If they find a mate, they will live in their territory until their last second of life. Females are also very protective of their babies and eggs, and does not allow the male close to them for a few months. Females can lay 1 to 4 eggs normally, but only 2 make it to adulthood, rare are those who can survive for this long. A female would take very good care of her youngs, but will certaintly will not be able to feed all of them, resulting in a few's deaths, depending on which was born first and last. Males would hunt and bring back food, mostly fish such as Salmon or Trout. Once grown up enough, the male and female would force their babies to fly away and live on their own, sometimes biting them to show them they would not be caring for them anymore. It may happen their own babies come back in the territory, but as their family bond is strong, they will not be chased away by the pair.

If a rival male or female come in the territory, the male or female will fight them, and whichever wins gets to claim the territory as their own, and if a male wins, it may kill the other male and claim the female as his'. However such events are rare and the male usually cowards out with the female, abandonning their eggs or babies behind. Rival Lightning Surfers winning a territory with babies of their enemy still in the nest may kill them, but Lightning Surfers are not heartless monsters and they may take care of them nonetheless until they are old enough to go out on their own. Lightning Surfers killing babies of their rivals are extremely rare, as they are already very delicate with youngs of their species.

If a Lightning Surfer flies by a village, it may not attack, but may steal food if the food in their territory is scarce. They know having a village nearby means free food if anything like this had to happen. They are intelligent dragons and understand when a situation can be solved or not, and knows when to fight or not fight. And yes, despite their territorial nature, these dragons do not attack anything that moves unless necessary. So unless you show you're a threat, they will likely ignore you and go on their way. Only females are the ones you must be wary of.

Abilities

  • Lightning Breath: Lightning Surfer's usual main attack is their lightning breath. A single lightning breath can cause several damage the more powerful the dragon is. A lightning breath can affect around any surface and electrify water around, causing it to become a death field for a temporary amount of time. The more electricity the dragon stored, alongside it's power, the more powerful the lightning will hit. A Lightning Surfer attacking with a thunderstorm happening at the same time is known as a death sentence to anyone that stands in it's way during the attack. This attack however does not affect other Lightning Surfers.

  • Dive Bombing: Lightning Surfers are fast dragons despite their size, and one of their special ability is dive bombing. Using electricity as their main cover, they fire a huge blast at the enemy, causing destruction afterwards. The explosion varies with the speed the Lightning Surfer was in. The highest speed can cause explosions able to burn through metal! This attack does have an effect on other Lightning Surfers as it can temporarily make them lose the ability to absorb lightning, burning the metallic scales of their bodies for a little while. While it hurts and pinches, it is not lethal to them.

  • Electrical Field: Using a shield of electricity, Lightning Surfers can take some hits by protecting themselves with their wings, and their feathers contain electricity, causing anything that attacks them physically to get shocked hard. It can also protect from a distance attack such as other breaths and weapons.

  • Electric Blast: If enough electricity was stored, a Lightning Surfer can perform a lightning blast, which is a radius of electricity bursting around one area. It is not strong enough to burn something, but anyone using metallic object may get electrocuted. Electronical appliances also may get corrupted or messed with if affected. These electric blasts are rare to witness, as it requires a lot of energy for the dragon.

  • Melee Fighting: Lightning Surfers are surprisingly good at melee fighting. Their big size allows them to give even stronger attacks. The spikes on their tail can be lethal, as they can pierce though one's body if not careful. Claws can give huge scars and cause infections if not treated well. Their teeth are their best weapon. A male's bite leave deep wounds and massive pain, while a female's bite leave itchy wounds, since their teeth are more sharpened for cutting like a knife, unlike the male's which are made for killing.

  • Adaptability: Lightning Surfers are seen to adapt fairly well to new environments. Some were recorded to live on a small island or even very high mountain! Other kind of Surfer species were recorded as hints there are more than just one type! Heck, there are even Deep Sea Surfers! How cool is that??

Weaknesses

  • Lightning Overdose: Yes, even Lightning Surfers have limits. If a Lightning Surfer absorbs too much electricity, it may electrocute itself. It can be lethal to younger ones, but older Lightning Surfers are known to take it well. However upon having this electrocution, the affected one will not be able to move or absorb lightning for a little while. So it can be easy to kill one while it is under this state.

  • Rubber: One of the main thing used to capture a Lightning Surfer. Since rubber is immune to lightning, hunters use traps involving rubber in order to neutralize their lightning. Non-fully grown Lightning Surfers are often baited by these traps and captured because of it. Hunters tend to cover their spikes and wings with rubber as they are the primary areas the dragon stores it's lightning.

  • Large Size: While they are fast, Lightning Surfers are far from being the most agile. While they show some flight agility with the current, it can get difficult if fighting a flying enemy that is much more agile than them. With a slower turn ration and pitch ratio, it is easy to make them slam themselves on the ground or wall if they retained a certain speed. Some people use those tactics to knock out a Lightning Surfer, although most of the time it was for research purposes.

Taming and Training
Getting the trust of a Lightning Surfer is already hard enough with their territorial behavior, seen almost impossible to tame. Sometimes people would try and steal an egg, but only one person is known to have come back alive and with an egg at that... However helping or saving an adult Lightning Surfer would make it respect you and welcomed to it's territory.
It was advised to get the trust of a Juvenile that recently left the nest. As they are more naive and have not developped their territorial behavior yet. Feeding a Juvenile would allow you to bond with it more faster, at the cost of a lot of food. Training a Lightning Surfer requires a lot of patiente, and good armor, because as soon as it learns how to channel lightning, you better get yourself rubber armor to not finish cooked. Juveniles are also a lot more playful and need to be taught a lot. Their personality is also reflecting on whoever is training them. So a person treating it sweetly will cause the Juvenile Surfer to become calm, obediant and gentle, while one trained with violence will cause it to become aggressive, hard to control and attack anything it sees without second thought.

Known Individuals
Icarus: Icarus is, if not, the most powerful Lightning Surfer in existence. No other of his species comes close to the might and power of his lightning and attacks. This black beast is also called "The King of Surfer Species" as no other Lightning Surfers managed to even defeat this massive beast. Icarus lives alone in a mountain near the Crystal Falls in the Paradise Territory. He seems to wear a scarf, but no one knows who gave it to him or where it came from...
