Description This is my pride and joy at the moment. This is all gold silk and red cotton brocade, with cream velvet ribbon and gold trim. Those little gold florets took me ten minutes apiece. There are probably about 60 on the forepart and the sleeves. There are about 60 yards of velvet ribbon on this thing. The hat and feathers I bought, but I made the band. It is also used (with different band and feathers) for the periwinkle pearl costume. This took me forever, but it's so worth it. I know I'm making a strange face in one of these, but this involved much friendly teasing between me and my dad, the photographer. I would have taken these pictures outside, but there was no sunlight and Wisconsin is rather cold in December, not to mention rather snowy, and this cost too much to get wet. Also check out the more detailed one. This would be a mid-late 16th century noble class gown, worn over a farthingale and corset, which I have pictures up. When I go to the fair this summer, I'll put up some better pics. I fit the bodice before I lost 15 lbs, so it's a little loose. I need to fix that.

Edit: New pics, I always think they look better outside, and I have a great yard for it. I like the contrast of the green tree against the red and gold. It was a windy day, and it made my skirt floof up a bit, which looks cool.

this is amazing! I'm wondering, though, if you ironed the fabric beforehand... the mid-crease in the skirt is a bit distracting. I can't imagine man-handling all that fabric on the table, though.. I'm barely through my duvet cover... It's been quite a pain!!! Lovely work here.

Wow, stunning costume. And all that ribbon trim sewn onto silk... that must've taken some dedication. My sister's really into dressmaking and sewing in general, she'd love this. Definite

Ah, impressive! I haven't got access to any Ren Faires around where I live (the cold, bleak, uncivilized Western end of Canada ), but I do have the SCA, though I tend to stay 14th century for practical purposes (wool is my *friend*). I'd much like to try going to a Ren Faire some time.

I noticed in one of the comments earlier your concern about the fake pearls in the heat. If you are able, take a look on Ebay for real pearls. Freshwater ones are not terribly expensive, if you're willing to sacrifice the perfect roundness (them that perfectly round ones are *expensive*). I recently bought four 16" strings for $20, and that's in Canadian funds!

I'm sooper impressed (by your gallery, too). Keep it up, eh?

wow. not everyone can dredge up the love time and dedication you must have put into this. ^_^. if you don't mind my asking what year would you date this dress? ^_^. it's a very important question mind. U_U. and what do you say would inflence the feather? and supposing you were being anal to the t. could this person have long hair tied up in a bun or was it not the fashion?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

immortalphoenix In reply to Kuzunari [2006-01-24 21:17:40 +0000 UTC]

1560-1580, English fashion. Everyone wears feathers at the fair, and I see them in my books, and I just like it. Women generally had long hair in a bun, and then covered it with a caul or biggins and then a hat.

Lovely - can anyone remember why no-one wears these things anymore, it truely is a shame - I'd feel in my element in top and tails, with a cane and pocketwatch; with of course a beautiful lady wearing something stunning like that on my arm. Love the design though, and you model it really well.

Some guys are idiots to not keep interested in pretty ladies for more than a month.

Keep up the stunning work.

And to all you ladies: "I am free"

P.S. When can we see more??

Lol. Thanks, and I certainly wonder what happened to those days as well. I'm more comfortable in my period pieces than I am in my normal clothes. I should start a fashion. And more will come as soon as I can make it happen!

a renaissance fair! cool. i did one with the sealed knot(the group i'm part of) in detling, UK. loads of people there, from Roman to WW2.

the russians looked especially cool.

i dunno what the US has, but you have Cosplay over there, and we in the UK don't have it, or not as widespread as such.

Dressing up is cool though. and my Girlfriend saw your dress, and she had the following to say:

'I Want one!'

You have done an excellent job building this beautiful gown. I have many friends who are historical costumers, and have built my own Elizabethan gown, though it was not for court. My only crit, and it is nit-picking, of this is that I really wish you had taken the time to get the wrinkles and folds out of the skirt before the shoot. Wind or no wind, that gorgeous skirt would have hung so-o much better, and really have shown off your hard work.

I know. I hate ironing. Lol. You're not the only one who has said that, and you may be seeing a seam, I have no doubt that I should have pressed it. And thank you! Most people don't give crits, I appreciate it when someone does.
