Description
So, this is my new studioIt works perfectly and costs almost nothing
How to construct one? Easy! This is nothing ground braking but might still help some of you:
Clear out a shelf or a section of your closet. Closet is even better because there's no dismembering of the studio if you don't want it to be seen when you're not using it
Buy white paper. Mine is 220g/m2 (quite thick). It needs to be big enough to cover the bottom of the shelf, the back and the top. Why the top? If you choose to use a mirror for your photos this will help you avoid dark corners and/or different colors. Also, if you smudge the bottom you can turn the paper on the other side.
Bend the paper to cover the shelf, wall and top of the shelf. Try to keep it nicely curved and not squished.
If your shelf is narrow - something white on the sides would help but is not necessary. If you're photographing small objects the sides won't be a problem
Get some lamps. Lights. White ones are best but any kind will do. I use ihavenoideawhatkind lamps. They are yellowish which is annoying but i haven't yet bothered to buy white ones. Oh well... The yellow tint can be easily removed by adjusting the white balance on your camera or in post production (photoshop, corel photopaint, gimp, etc)
And that's it!
Onto taking pictures of stuff inside my studio instead of taking pictures of the studio

Thanks so much for posting this! The current method of taking photos is not working. I'm spending more time editing the photos than I am making the jewelry.
My closet is perfect for this.

Hahaha, at first I tought that the scale of your studio is much bigger than in reality, for example it seems for me that that white thing was some kind of plastic bathtube or wash bowl, and an object you're want to take picture is a necklage

Hooray for do-it-yourself studios!

Works great, doesn't it! I'm usually just to lazy to set it all up unless I am doing a whole afternoon of product shots. I don't have the space to leave it up.

It does! hooray for "studios"!
I had the same problem and one more - used my balcony as a studio, but now it is -5Β°C outside so that's no longer an option

Yeah that is a might chilly for outdoor work! My studio/ basement is in the process of being torn apart to repair water damage. Don't know when it will be fixed.

oh that sucks
it will be done soon
would you have enough space for a say 20x20x20" box? if yes you can set the studio up in that and when you're done just stuff everything in the box and use it as a end table or something? lightboxes are easy to make
one of my problems was also that this big paper refused to stand nicely curved by itself on a table so i had to use all sorts of props to keep it up which never lasted for more then 10min because of the wind. now the shelf keeps the paper in place and there's no wind at all! HA!

I have a plan to build a frame for a light box, complete with changeable backdrops and all. I just have to get my studio re-done. Idon't get much work done right now anyway, with it torn apart! When I get it built, do you want the plans for it?

Thank you! it works so i'm happy with it

It's inspired me to get off my butt and make my own!
I find doing the whole white balance switch works just as well most of the time, so why bother really?

Beautiful setup! I may steal from this idea; I've been looking at a new setup myself.

I've always shied away from white backgrounds because it was more glaring than grey but...lately I'm reconsidering white.

true but it is manageable, you just have to find the right setting on your camera
the thing i like the most about the all-around-white is that i don't get any weird colorful reflections on photographed items anymore
and this paper is kinda metallic so it also reflects some of the light which diffuses the shadows
