Description
ok…I starting to be tired of this shit… call me a grumpy kid but still…I get those “soul eater” relatives comments on my Smtry the gardener pictures and comic over and over again!… i KNOW that smtry have white hair….and shark teeth…. just like soul eater evans?….but pls understand… smtry is not a fucking ripoff or coloroff you name it. smtry is his own character with his own comic. i had made a picture full of references of anime people with shark teeth and white hair. Soul is not the only one… but i can understand that people don’t know other characters because..soul eater is a veeery huge popular anime in the whole world. and still its awesume. but just because my character had white hair and shark teeth it dos’t mean they are relatives or something. i still can see those fanfictions and pictures over the internet with crossovers when smtry plays as souls SON!… well…as a fun thing OK!…but people need to understand this is’t canon!
People also comment on my comic and pictures that Smtry and Corp reminds them of CRONA and ragnarok (also from souleater) crona is an very psychotic and paranoid person who is very afraid all the time! And Ragnarok who is Cronas living weapon and blood is very mean againgst all and crona as well. he is not really a good “person” and he use to hit crona over and over again!…
SMtry is a very nice and calm guy! he can be naiv sometime but not stupid. he is pretty social and not a lonely person. And can see love in the most people.
Corp is not evil…but he has a very dark humor. he don’t hit smtry. he is smtrys “eyes” (because smtry are blind from the birth) Corp don’t hate smtry. and smtry don’t hate corp. they are a team! smtry don’t care what corp really says even if he can be ruff and maybe a bit mean. but he is not EVIL just a bit insane xD
soo…. ._.’
ARE THEY REALLY THAT SIMULAR!? pls…
look at them…just look at them….and…
let it sink in for some minute…
people need to move on...

..... i don't think they got so mush in common actually. i think smtry's story actually very different from soul eater, and i want to say that the style doesn't looks so common either :/
both are awesome and have their own individually story's and don't even have the same plot at all so... i don't get why they are being mixed up together actually...

Not an easy matter.
With so many different stories and characters being shared all over the world (especially online), even if you have a truly original idea for a character concept and design, chances are always high that there's something similar already out there. In addition, people tend to notice the percieved similarities between characters more than the differences, focussing on on the parts that look familiar and going like, "Oh, look, that's an XY fanart/ripoff/..." while glossing over the details which are clearly different.
I can also imagine that you get annoyed with people having that misconception over and again, but my advice is to try and not take them so seriously.
Why? Because the guys who write those comments probably take about a second to think about it and clearly haven't even bothered reading your drawing's description (where you usually state that this is an original character of yours) or paying attention to those differences like the dark hairtips, hair styling and the eyes (to name only the three most prominent ones) or even your story's on logo that shows up in many of your drawings. So chances are that they won't pay much attention to your explanations either - and besides, it seems like a good way to tire yourself out talking to people who don't actually pay an interest. Starting a discussion via the internet seldomly leads to any good, and you have high chances of getting even more frustrated if you try.
What is important ist that 1) you and 2) your fans and followers who are really interested in your stories and characters know the difference. I wouldn't waste my breath on people who actually don't care, but enjoy the support and positive feedback of those who do and appreciate your little Smtry for the (very original) person he is!
(Note that this opinion only counts for online debates. I'm a big fan of face-to-face discussions and find it perfectly okay to give somebody a piece of your mind if they're being disrespectful, but the internet is an awful place for trying to have fruitful debates or even merely explain stuff to people who aren't willing to actually listen.)
Taking a look at the Soul Eater image you posted for comparison, I also can't help but notice your drawing style is waaay cooler.
Hope this boosts your self esteem a little and makes your day better; don't get yourself angered by people's unreflected opinions that aren't worth your precious time!

thank you so much! yess...you have so right!...i should stop care...but i guess i most afraid! i'm afraid that this "rippoff" talking people will destroy my chances to post my comic seriously.i'm afraid that ALL people in the whole world will think the same. and you have rght that people use to notice the similar thing before the difference ...
really?? thank you so much!!*3*<3

I can really assure you that it won't.
Judging a character by his looks that may or may not be similar to another character you know can happen when looking at a single artwork, but once you start reading an ongoing story you automatically get to know the character as a "person". I also don't think that the alleged similarity will weaken the interest in your comic. On the contrary, I can remember frequently having checked out a comic from a shelf or online because a character's looks reminded me of another one I liked, or even one of my OCs. And never did it take long for me to decide if, based on the story itself, I liked the allover piece or not.
The outside looks of a similarly familiar character can spark your interest, but to get caught in a story you need to like the actual story and characters, not just their looks (or, more specifically, one single character's looks).
I also want to add that I, in fact, don't see so much similarity between Smtry and Soul Eater Evans. If you hadn't pointed it out, I actually wouldn't have thought that people might connect those two or mistake them for being the same character.
However, this is the internet, a social field with much room for communities people want to be part of. That's why 9gag has so many memes and "in-jokes", to create a feeling of "belonging" and "knowing what's going on" for each other in the social interaction. I think people are more likely to jump to conclusions in an online-setting since they are familiar with and also have come to love this "Hey, I know this too"-feeling.
Chances are that people won't even draw such fast connections if you start publishing your comic out there in the real world.
How is it going with your comic, by the way? I saw you mentioning somewhere that you were finished with the first chapter?

I remember loving visits to IKEA (yeah, we have it here too ^^) with my parents when I was a kid, because I would always take some of those pencils with me. They were absolutely crappy, but as they were "new" for me I considered them pretty amazing.
So what did you use as inspiration for self-teaching? Your favourite shows and comic books? Did you also get some of those super-awkward "how to draw"-booklets from well-meaning family members? (I used to, and boy, some of them were bad.... )

Uhm... that's not an entirely easy statement to reply to, especially via the internet. I guess I'm sorry about that.
Anyway, it's a cool thing the Christian themes got you into drawing - I'm sure it was the beginning of a road to awesomeness! (You're actually already pretty far along! )
And you're most welcome of course.

Talking about sensitive topics online can go to very bad places, so I try avoiding any statements that can easily be taken the wrong way.
Also, please do tell me if you find anything I'm writing offensive in any way - I surely don't mean to!
About the Christian thing: Ew, that kind of sucks.
I'm not a Christian myself and I was raised as a rare agnostic in a very Christian country, but of course I always got in touch with religion through society (for example, there only was a Catholic kindergarden in the town I grew up in, and I also always took Religion as a subject at school). Happily, I've come to know some people who are really religious and yet very open to different concepts of living and loving, no matter what opinion is shared in the bible or from the Vatican, or even their own church's priest. Of course, there are always fundamentalists, in every form of belief, who react with fear, anger and violence to anything that's different... but those are a minority which is hopefully shrinking.
Last semester, I took a university course on Christian sexual ethics with a friend, and the basic thing I took away from it was that even the Christian Church's opinion on people who don't fit the scheme of "straight, cisgender, normal" is up for a - slow, but unstoppable - change. They have overthrown rules and opinions in the past, and the Bible is just a very old book written for a very different society. It also says somewhere in there that you're unclean if you wear a piece of clothing made from two different materials, or that you sin against your children if you don't occasionally beat them up for education. Rules change, and someday, I believe even those big ones will. After all, the Catholic Church is starting to stop viewing women as "inferior" or "servants" to men, and that had one awfully long tradition.
Of course it is a painful, horrible experience to be rejected by people just on behalf of your sexual identiy or orientation, but it also kind of shows you someone's true face when it comes to their value of another human being. In other words, if they don't want your company because of something so superficial as a slightly different belief, love or identity, how much would they have cared about your feelings when it came to other things? If somebody judges others in such a shallow fashion, there is a high chance they wouldn't have made a very good friend for you anyway. Also, it really is their loss not to associate with you because of such an overwhelmingly stupid reason.
(And now feel sympathy-hugged from a fellow non-straight gal who values your amazing art, the nice conversations with you, your wits and sense of humour, and your way of fighting for your beliefs against all odds. Let me tell you you're awesome, whatever people may think of you (they're probably not thinking very much anyways...) )
... such a long text!

I like this, but the word for Crona isn't 'psychotic', that refers to people with psychosis , not unlawful people(but people tend to use them as the same word)
Change Psychotic to unlawful pleae
But I think it's more of the fact that there are a lot of similar traits in one that gets people off...Maybe making his hair a bit on the blue/grey/yellow side would make people shut it?

ImoonArt In reply to DreamLandWarrior [2014-08-26 18:48:46 +0000 UTC]
well i kinda see crona as a person with some psychotic disorders..or have a traumatic stress syndrome. (its not negative but i kinda know those things) Crona is also very depressive and don't trust people because of his childhood. in some episodes he use to go deep into his mind like an "phykos" as a child(that is not unormal for people with those traumatic stress syndrome)
and noo why should i even change the design? and it feels even harder now i already have DONE the very first comic episode :/ i had put to much hard work in this...

Yeah that's true(about the hair thing) but I guess a small harmless change wouldn't be too bad?
Also, to add to characters that look a lot like Soul, search Sal from Wadanohara, has both red eyes, shark teeth(LITERALLY A SHARK) and white hair.
