After submitting the first sketch I did, here's the colored version.
I wouldn't be surprised if you like the original more, since the sketch style has a certain indefinite feeling that well fits this situation.
Anyway, drawing this made me feel more productive, so you are free to ignore it.
The worst part was deciding AJ's mother colors... as I said in the comments of the original sketch, she didn't have any form in my mind until she was drawn. So I didn't even think about colors back in those days.
I'm still not sure on how they turned out, but there's always time to change them.

Ah'm digging that filter ya used, it certainly gives it that "from the haze of one's memories" feeling for sure.
It really does capture that feeling ya get when you think back on somethin' that makes ya smile but then leaves that slightly twisting ache in yer heart after the smile passes.
And I think the colors work well, helps show that Apps definitely got her colors from her momma.

Well, I tried to put something of all three Apple siblings in her character, but I managed to balance them...
And I thought about what you said about justifying their parents' absence without involving death... and I remembered one thing! In "The Cutie Mark Chronicles", filly Applejack and Big Mac were already living there with Granny Smith, but without Applebloom. This means that the Apple parents were already away, but they were still alive!

So perhaps the truth might not be a sad as we all think...
At least that's what Ah ran with in mah story because, well, Ah don't wanna make Apps sad.
How could Ah make her sad like that by having her parents be dead? That's just not right...which is why Ah cooked up something believable when it got to where they show up! XD
Perhaps Season 4 or above might one day clarify but Ah like to think that the Mane 6's family is still alive in terms of parents and stuff. We already know T-Sparks' is since they've shown up quite a bit...at least more than the other five's parents.

Rarity's are alright, fishing and traveling...
The remaining three... we don't really know. We saw only Dash's father and it as for... two seconds on screen?

Yeah, Dashie's dad was seen shortly in the Games Ponies Play episode.
So technically that's just Flutters and Apps' parents that are off in the mysterious limbo of the unknown save for fan theories.
Of course, speaking of Dashie Ah have to wonder just how crazy pony genetics are that rainbow-colored hair is naturally occurring.

I like the effect of the grain filter. It does make it look old-timey, and it reminds me of the flashbacks in A Friend in Deed.
The contrast between what everyone was thinking upon the mention of "secret moments" and the actual truth is interesting. Gives this piece perhaps even some more strength.
For the longest time, I've been trying to figure out what that line is to the right of AJ's mom's head. I think it's the handle of a pitchfork? For some reason, the line falls more to the foreground than the background. If you somehow can make it look more like it actually sticks inside the stack of hay, I think it'd help with the perspective.
I like the colored drawing more, but one thing I like more in the sketch is that in the sketch it's more like AJ's mom is looking at her daughter. Here, she seems to be looking more off to the side.
I don't know if it's just me, but her cutie mark is really difficult to see.
In general, the drawing looks very cuddly. It's not always easy to achieve that feel. But you managed to nail it.
Oh wait! One more thing! The mom's ears seem just a tad too small. It probably also doesn't help that there is no visual distinction between the back of her ear and the back of her head; it's one smooth line.

Yup, that one is the handle of a pitchfork and I'm terribly aware of its tricky perspective nature, and sadly it was the effect of one of the filters. I'll try to mitigate the effect!
For the eyes... since I don't use guidelines or lines for them, I couldn't obtain the same feeling when I colored.
I deliberately made the cutie mark difficult to see, since I didn't want AJ mother to be too definite. For your eyes' sake I'll tell you that it's three apples all together, one red, one orange and one yellow. Yup, it's another source of endless tears.

Perhaps have some shadow where the pitchfork is stuck inside the stack of hay? That will make it look more connected to the haystack rather than floating in the air.

I do, but to apply the filters I had to unite the layers under them, and then unite the image to the filters to apply other filters...

La cosa migliore sarebbe quella di scrivere facendo dei piccoli errori di scrittura tale che un italiano comunque capirebbe il senso... ma in modo tale che così per un traduttore automatico come Google Translate sarebbe impossibile da capire *.*
Anche perché tanto so già che Google Translate non traduce i verbi dall'italiano all'inglese talvolta se sono al congiuntivo o al condizionale
