Description
The original X15A.Capable of Mach 6 and 100,000 ft+ in the early 60's.
No manned fixed wing powered aircraft has gone faster and it wasn't until 2004 till we went higher.

Nice picture! You can also see the Spirit of St. Louis which is temporarily on the floor of the hall for restoration, the Apollo 11 command module Columbia, the Viking replica, and, hanging across the hall from the X15, Chuck Yeager's X1 Glamorous Glennis!

Ah the X-15.
Depending on who's standard you used for the limit of space, at least 2 and up to 13 of the flights went to space, making it the first space plane. There were even some plans to extend the program into a proper space program.

I think 8 pilots flew over 50 miles high with the 5 military pilots receiving astronauts wings. In 2005 legendary civilian test pilot Bill Dana received astronaut wings on his behalf and the two other civilian pilots who had pre deceased.

Lots of interesting history around this airframe and its sisters.
Yer NASA were a little mushy on their limits of space figures for awards compared to what they actually are but I'm not about to go chest poking over it
