Description Another one of those short lived ideas by the US military in the 50's. As the new fleet of ICBM's were slow coming they developed this rocket launched, jet engined beast. What they ended up with was a very large, slow nuclear cruise missile that was out of service only months after becoming fully operational. Many were lost during test due to the advance celestial navigation just doing its own thing. One is supposed to have vanished into the Brazilian jungle and the waters of the Caribbean are said to be Snark infested.
Part of a series of images shot at the Strategic Air and Space Museum Nebraska. You can read about this aircraft and others on their website .

Well I have not been to these Snark infested waters but the dangers do indeed lie in the depths of the Carabian.

Another example of Jack Northrop's fascination with tail-less designs

They certainly chased that dragon for a while but you got the B2 spirit out of it so it wasn't all fail

I believe the B-49 could have been successful, if there had been a workable stability augmentation system to keep the jet flying stable.

That was the general issue with these things. A nice idea but needed a computer doing the bulk of the work. Proves how ahead of his time he was though.

Yessir.  I found it interesting the B-1 had the exact same wingspan of the B-35/B-49. I saw a movie "The Wing Will Fly" that stated that Jack Northrop was briefed on the B-1 project before his death while the project was still "Double Super Secret Squirrel"
