Photoshop, i was testing how some skin brushes worked. Then i realized i needed some more, culminating inΒ incblob.deviantart.com/art/Ski… ,which was a test for the two unfinished photoreal portraits in my gallery. unfortunately my hard drive then died . so they were left unfinished...

Well they're nice Imo, but what tools did you use? Just brush and smudge or?

hm, well for the portraits i sort of went back and forth using heavily textured brushes (anything from rough chalk brushes, to self made skin pore brushes that i extracted from photos), then smoothing it over with airbrush/soft brushes. some lasso for the hard edges (or just hard brushes).
basically start adding layers of texture, then softening, then again with the texture etc... getting softer as you go, finally go in with a tiny brush for the details.
while i do use blender brushes, those are best for developing form, not texture.
It's best to paint over texture rather than just blend it out, this of course depends on what you're painting.
the more textured a skin you paint the "drier" it looks. a very smooth skin looks either wet or fatty.
now this is the method i used for these particular portraits, it changes depending on what i want to end up with. I found this approach useful for photorealism but it's pretty useless for anything quicker than that.Β

now i sayΒ all this with the disclaimer that i'm just making it up as i go along, you might want to look at pro tutorials for a more common workflow.

Cheers
