1. Baby, uncorrupted Discord/Regulus

So, from my older concepts of Everfree, I headcanoned that Draconequus had cub spots that faded as they aged, and were gone completely by adulthood. Discord is no exception, of course, and was an entirely cute, mottled baby. He was very much beloved by the empire as the young prince of Empress Harmonia and her consort, the head of the guard Arbiter. He was always a good, excited kid, even when everything began to go wrong in the Empire, and even as an adult, his people looked to him as a source of optimism. The betrayal of Celestia and Luna cracked him, the loss of his empire broke him, and finally, watching his once glowing and youthful mother wither away shattered him, and what remained of his sanity. He powered his creation magic with every negative emotion he had, corrupting it, and lashing out at the source of his pain: The little ponies that abandoned him. The magic twisted his body, splitting apart and warping features of his body, sapping the youth from his form, but he didn't care. All that mattered was that the ponies suffered.

After reformation, he desperately wishes that he could change back to his old form, but the damage is done. Thankfully for him, Fluttershy was able to look past his gnarled exterior and wicked ways, seeing the wounded colt buried under the pain, and helping him channel that back out.

2. Arbiter, Discord's deceased father and Harmonia's consort.

He looks suspiciously familiar, doesn't he? Or, perhaps, it is somebody else who resembles him... His importance will be explained later on when I discuss the Crystal Ponies, but there are things to note about him.

As a fist gen Draconequus, he was formed out of a lizard that got a little too close to a magical crystal. One of the first to help Harmonia unite the draconequi and build their empire, he was rewarded with a high position as the captain of the guard. Insanely powerful and full of chivalry, he wouldn't dare glance in a lady's direction if he wasn't ordered to do so. It took....more than a few centuries for him to calm down once he started catching feelings for his Empress, and they started casually seeing each other outside of work. ("Oh, her Grace has ordered that I protect her Bedroom? Then I will obey with pride.") One thing led to another and eventually the pair decided to have a child together.

In Draconequus culture, there is no such thing as marriage. As they are naturally immortal and can only die from unnatural means, it is natural that even the strongest relationship will eventually grow stale, and either partner may want to move on. It is just as normal to see a Draconequus spending several decades with a partner as seeing a pair that has been together for millennium. Because of this, Arbiter was never crowned as a ruler, and when he died, his position merely fell to the next in line. Yet, the tremors caused by his death rippled up until the very end of the Draconequus empire. Harmonia lost her rock, and grew ever colder and more forceful. Without such an accomplished fighter to lead them, the guards became less organized. Regulus had begun retreating into himself. His death showed how frail their system was, and rushing to find something that could help build up their defenses before the swarm came, Harmonia made the call to enslave the peasant pony herds to the south.

NOTES

- Baby Regulus was a really, really sweet kid. He liked to give everyone he met flowers and as his magic began to manifest, conjured up gifts.
- Regulus was a HUGE momma's boy. Whenever he had nightmares, he liked to cuddle up into his momma's tail fur.
- Discord often misses his baby cub-spots, and endlessly doted on Everfree's while she was a baby.
- Arbiter was one of the first beings ever to discover dark magic. He warned against repeated usage, but endless centuries allowed him to master it in small doses. He wrote various tablets about the workings of dark magic.
- Arbiter actually was unable to fly for the entirety of his life. This inability to flee from situations convinced him to learn how to fight instead.
- While Harmonia was semi-dormant within the Tree of Harmony, she constantly reached out to find where her beloved's soul had gone. Each time, she only found dark lingerings in the frozen north, except for when the Crystal Empire returned...
