Description
Hi there!Yet another "against-the-light" matte painting.
I want to show off a post apocalyptic destroyed cityscape, maybe after a war.
It's done with Photoshop CS and After Effects.
I kept the buildings in several layers and added fog in between.
Finally I rendered a camera pullback in After Effects with a previous version of the matte.
Please use "save target as ...", since I haven't optimised the clips for streaming:
PC - WMV-File, WM Version 8 Codec (3.4 MB): [link]
MAC - Quicktime, Sorenson Codec (9.8 MB): [link]
For those who are interested in having a look at the initial sketch: [link]
Thanks hoon, for helping me out with the final color correction
Cheers, Daniel

Incredible detail and softness in the image. Bravo!
I'm trying to get into matte painting myself and am wondering what your technique was. Did you purely paint this in photoshop? Did you use stock photos? How? How?
Thanks

Absolutely perfect. I love ruins of buildings, this is heaven for me.
One of my characters lives in such a world, but I'm just not able to picture it.

It's funny, I suppose, how beautiful a future like that looks when put on canvas. And then you think about it...
Superb.

It's like Fallout 3 concept art or something Awesome work both on capturing the whole landscape and details. Those fireplace lights and other flashes show that it's not a dead city after all. I like the atmosphere, totally silent still heavy and filled with radiation plus a little bit of something misterious.
A must have !

Great stuff +FAV!
IMHO - in the animation there's one thing you should take into condiceration: the distance of the blast to the "camera". The impact of the sound wave in the real word would hit the camera way much later. The "camera" should shake at least approx. 100ms later than the visual blast.
In all due respect

Very real looking. Fantastic job, scary though. A goal could be to try and prevent this I suppose, but it is very pretty, in a sad way. Right, I'll stop contradicting myself. Cheers

that animation is absolutely astonishing... I want to get to that point and be able to do that... what exactly went into making this, with the programs involved? Was it a bloody lot of work like it looks? and can I do this without breaking the bank?
I want to be able to create movies with shots like this, bloody heck yes I do
this is astonishing
I do agree about the lights, this destroyed and how would they still run, but yeah... artistic licensce definitly. That and the explosion is a little lifeless, although the camera jiggle is pretty sweet. Would a camera react to such an explosion so far away? Still, physics aside, this rocks amazingly so -crash
