I hate posting images without names, but I'm at a loss as to what to name this one. I know what I see in it, but I'm not sure that's where I want to go in a title.

It began its life as a horizontal piece; I only recently turned it to (hopefully) enhance eye flow. It has been obsessively tweaked -- even by my own standards, but I think it's close to finished. I was going to wait to post it until I could also post a hi-res version that could be explored in detail. That render time, however, is currently estimated to finish 5 months from now!!!

Meanwhile, I'm very open to suggestions, criticisms, and, of course candidate titles!

Here's a link to a zoomable version of a very large render:

The earthy tones and some of the shapes suggest mushrooms, but what I tend to see here are more floral shapes: jack-in-the-pulpit shapes in the upper right and snapdragon or orchid shapes toward the bottom and left. Earth orchids.

But it's that sense of something familiar that I can't quite put my finger on that draws me into this image. I like this a lot.

Very organic & autumnal looking with your palette. The first thing I thought of was those fungus-y mushrooms that seem to pop out after a rain, I've even seen some on my grass. Me & most everyone else too. Where's the Keebler elves when you need them ?

And honestly, the only thing that I could come up with for a title was something with the Hobbits, like this was a house for them, or an escape for them, or a bolthole for them. "Escape To The Shire"? With a link to "band on the run"? Sorry, couldn't resist. Anyhow, it's a great pic & good luck named it.

Whereas a different cropping may have pulled my eye out of the image through the lower left corner, in this presentation, the detail in the lower left complements the rectangular corner. I like it very much!

Delicious colors and textures, as always! This makes me think of peeling back our boundaries, our persona, our long personal histories, to reveal our most inner, natural Selves. That rich red beneath the "bark" in the upper right really stands out to me. There's something wonderful under there.

Now we're on to something. Although I admit the images looks like fungi and other shapes, I'm also attracted to a more esoteric meaning, which I think you've described perfectly -- particularly in conjunction with the "cocoon" idea above. Many thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!

For some reason the first thing I came up with was Cocoon. Must be the abstract person in me

Nice interpretation -- especially in context with dreamingaze's comment below: the cocoon that protects our inner selves. Thanks for the idea!

"The Plotter"?

There's definitely a look of evil here - someone thinking wicked thoughts. I love the earthen tones - another great work from you!

I'm pretty much agreeing with the others so far. I see organics, mushrooms and also nuts and shells. I can think of a couple of fun names, but you might not want to go there either Look forward toseeing the finished piece....I'll put a note in my diary for some time mid summer

This morning, after 18 hours of rendering, it's a whopping half-a-percent done! It's chugging along at 7 pixels a second. I do know from the smaller renders that it will pick up speed along the way. So maybe May instead of June!

"Observing from the Tree Line" Perhaps?

I'm liking what I see already of it. It's a shame renders take that long
But, this is a pretty boss piece, as per usual for you

Thanks, Travii! That's a good suggestion for a title -- much better than what I'd considered.

What were you considering?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

infinite-art In reply to Platinus [2011-01-10 22:04:26 +0000 UTC]

There were some earlier versions where the palette really suggested some openings/orifices -- mouths and other body parts. There was a red version where the largest "mushroom" looked like an upper lip and the roof of a mouth. Others looked like ears and, er, other parts. So I was considering some version of "Apertures." Even after I changed the palette, I was unable to let go of some of those early associations. I'm really glad to get some fresh perspectives here!
