Between Brothers. . .

Chapter One

They say there is no stronger bond than that of two brothers. Brothers who start a journey together, see the world together, grow together, hurt together, laugh and live and love together.

Tis the bond between brothers.

They say there is nothing strong enough to tear two brothers apart. There is no fight that is harsh enough, no woman pretty enough, no battle hard enough to overcome this undying link. That's what they say.

But is it true? Is there a bond so strong, that the world itself could not break it? Could there really be such a powerful connection in this world?

There were many who could testify that yes, there was. And there were many who could set the perfect example of this endless bond.

But none could hold a candle to the flames that roared with love and devotion within the hearts of Yugi Muoto and his mysterious companion, Yami.

None could say for sure whether the two were actually related, for Yami seemed to have just...showed up in the boy's life.

However there was no doubt in the world that both Yami and Yugi shared the unmistakeable bond of true brothers.

Their bond was of the highest caliber, for nothing-- nothing the world could conjure up -- could come between them.

At least...not until the world bestowed upon the boys a challenge.

A challenge in the shape of a certain young lady with deep (e/c) orbs and a heart of pure steel.

The morning was bright and the hour young. The students of Domino High School were filing into the building, chattering away with their peers.

"Last night's Algebra homework was rough..."

"Are you kidding?! Forget the homework, that English exam in third period is going to murder my grade! I'm doomed!"

"Maybe you should have thought of that instead of sleeping, huh Joey?"

"Ah, be quiet Téa. Nobody asked you anyhow."

"Maybe Bakura can help you cram before third period Joey."

"Hahah! It's funny because he's British!"

The one named Joey continued to laugh whilst clutching his stomach, his blond hair falling into his eyes. Téa, the brunette standing to his right simply shook her head while Tristan, the young man with pointy brown hair readjusted his backpack upon his shoulder.

"Either way guys, we should probably head to first period. The bell's gonna a ring soon." Téa pointed out, already turning to head down the hall. Joey managed to recover from his laughing fit and hurried to follow after his friends.

"Heheh...British..."

The trio soon found themselves in their first period class. And there they saw Bakura, the young fellow with the long white hair leaning against someone's desk. Tristan grinned and waved to them.

"Hey, Bakura! Yugi!"

Bakura looked up and smiled back at his friends as they approached.

"Hey guys, what's up?"

Joey went on to complain about his upcoming failure in English, while Téa turned her attention to the young man sitting at the desk.

Yugi Mutuo was his name. His spiky tri-coloured hair made it difficult not to notice him. The boy looked up from where he was fiddling with his large necklace pendant. He smiled at his friend.

"Good morning Téa." He greeted her politely, offering her a small smile which the girl returned gladly.

"Morning, Yugi. Are you feeling okay? You look a little off this morning." She said, her eyes flashing with worry. Yugi laughed sheepishly.

"Y-yeah, I'm just a little tired." He supplied. Tristan smirked.

"You weren't up all night with him again were you?" He asked, motioning toward Yugi's large necklace pendant. Yugi's face flushed.

"W-well you know...h-he doesn't sleep much. And he gets into trouble when he's bored." The boy responded, prodding lightly at the pendant. It glimmered just slightly before a deep voice resonated in Yugi's head.

'I don't get into tr--'

"So, u-uh...yeah." Yugi spoke again, effectively cutting the voice off and secretly relishing in the small grunt of dissatisfaction that came shortly after.

It was only a few minutes later that the class' instructor entered the room. Each student rose from their seats and bowed respectfully.

"Good Morning, Mr. Kurogane." Came the collective greeting. The instructor smiled out at his class.

"Good morning. Now, before we begin class today, I would like to make an announcement."

"What, you're finally gonna ease up on the lectures?" Joey murmured under his breath, earning him a swift kick from Téa who was sitting behind him.

"Today, we have a new student joining our class. She's from (Country) and I expect each an every one of you to make her feel welcome. You may come in, dear."

Each student in the room turned their attention to the classroom door. After only a few moments of waiting...the new student appeared.

She walked forward quietly, her hands folded in front of her, eyes set straight. She came to a stop once she reached the instructor.

"Why don't you introduce yourself to the class?"

There was silence...but then the girl turned to face the class.

Her deep (e/c) orbs were dark, partially hidden by her (h/l) (h/c) hair. The class looked on in awe as she began to speak.

"....Hello. I am (Last Name) (First Name)."

The class remained silent, all eyes wide and fixed on the mysterious new student.

"Oh man, she's really creepy!" Joey whispered toward Tristan. Tristan glared at his friend, shaking his head and motioning for him to keep quiet.

"Yes, now, Miss. (Last Name), you can have a seat right over there in behind Mister Mutuo." Mr. Kurogane said, motioning for (Name) to take her seat. The girl remained standing before the class for a few more moments, before turning to head to her seat. She kept her dull eyes forward, not even glancing at anyone as she passed by them. She silently placed herself in her seat. Yugi turned slightly to get a better look at her.

Upon closer inspection, Yugi could see that (Name)'s (e/c) orbs lacked any and all life. It was as if someone had sucked the light right out of them. Her lips were set in a straight line. And for some strange reason, Yugi felt his heart clench.

"U-um...hello, (Name)." He said politely, offering the girl a smile. "I-I'm Yugi. It's nice to meet you."

(Name)'s eyes slowly trailed up from the surface of her new desk to meet Yugi's friendly amythest orbs.

"...Hello. Yugi." She said.

And that was it. Yugi stared at the girl, confusion evident on his face. He then turned to his friends, who were all staring at (Name) with equal looks of confusion.

"U-uh, hey, are you feelin' alright?" Joey asked, eyeing the girl up and down. He received no response. The blond shot a glance at Yugi who simply shrugged.

"Alright then, class. Please turn you attention to the front board and we shall begin our lesson." Mr. Kurogane said. Each student turned to face the front, Yugi and his friends all doing the same. However, Yugi couldn't seem to focus.

His mind kept wandering back to the new girl with the dull (e/c) orbs sitting just one seat behind him.
