Description
Now for my favorite character. I wanted him to look more like a mechanic and a heavy machine. In this version, R2 was scrapped after the fall of the empire. Only his memory circuits and rusty name plate remained. Leia found some astromech parts (including R2's memory banks and name plate) in a 50 year old clone wars battle field and thought it would be a fun hobby. People often wondered why a wealthy princess would build a droid herself out of old parts instead of getting a shiny new droid (or why a princess would have an astromech droid instead of a servant droid). R2 feels an emotional connection to Leia and thinks very highly of her.Related content

Isn't that basically C-3PO's backstory from The Phantom Menace?

It's similar, though R2 was active durring the Republic Era too.

Just because it's old doesn't mean it's done.

Man, he does look banged up. He might even look worse than chopper does.

Chopper was an inspiration for the design. The major inspiration was Carlos D'Anda's artwork for the dark horse Star wars comics. R2 gets upgraded to a new body after vader dertroys his old one. fortunately he saved his memory on a backup drive and he gets put in a new body.
R2 also initially didn't like Luke due to him being vader's son. But he soon warms up to him once he starts to see the old Anikin Skywalker and a bit of Padme in him.
