My entry for *ArtyAMG 's contest.

It's my Viola, menacing evildoers with her brother's sword. Above her is an excerpt from one of my favourite poems, Invictus by William Ernest Henry:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Ok, a few notes on the dress!

So I'm totally psyched that I finally got a chance to draw Viola in one of these dresses, which is the style she normally wears. It's a 1780's chemise gown, and more specifically, I believe that this style is called a chemise a la reine. Ir's fairly historically accurate, except probably more simple, and of course, in the 1780's, a lady wouldn't have worn a steampunk girdle like Vi is.

And now a few notes on everything else!

Vi isn't an expert fighter in addition to being a rich, charming, beautiful glamazon - what with the strenuous political career she's imposed on herself, she doesn't have the time or the patience to study fighting - but she does know a few tricks for defending herself with a sword in a short scuffle and is a crack shot with a pistol, which is her weapon of choice. When I set out to create her, my idea was to create a woman who was strong, but at the same time femenine. I don't believe you need to be waving a sword around or doing kung fu or wearing pants in order to be a strong woman. As to the poem, Vi, like her brother, sort of gets the short end of the stick for most of the comic. She's kept under lock and key in a very unusual way, but thanks to her charm and wit, manages very quickly to use the situation to not only her advantage, but to her brother's as well.
