Description
I'm actually not a HUGE Drizzt Do'Urden fan... I'm only just now getting around to reading Salvatore's "Hunter's Blades" trilogy (just finished the second book), and I enjoy it as a sort of modern continuation of classic pulp fantasy... elves and dwarves and giants and orcs, oh my, I got a serious soft spot for all of it. Of course, it didn't hurt that I also just picked up Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone for the X-Box, which has some really sweet art direction (and guest-stars everyone's favorite rogue drow). All of this has kind of come together to tip my hand into a little light fan art.The whole Drizzt series was just getting started while I was in high school, so I got a bit of nostalgic fondness for the character. I was always very irritated at the early portraits of him, wherein artists kept illustrating him as an old man, because anyone who knows ANYTHING about Drizzt knows that he's a pretty young elf, less than 100, which makes him in many ways more the equivalent of a twentysomething.
If you're not familiar with the character, he's the creation of fantasy novelist R.A. Salvatore, and a standard of the D&D Forgotten Realms universe. He's quite the iconic figure to fantasy fans, an outcast from his people and society, adventuring with his great panther familiar through the wild northlands of the world.
D&D illustrator Todd Lockwood nailed him pretty well in the big 3E revamp of the whole D&D universe, though, and this illustration is based heavily on his canonical design. I took some liberties here and there, espescially with his twin swords... while there's a very solid and set design for these blades now, I don't recall that they're supposed to be a matched set of identical swords. It's been a few years since I read it all, but I seem to recall that he picked up Twinkle in the Underdark, and Icingdeath in the white dragon's lair, so I always thought they should look slightly different from each other. There's also a lot of argument over the shape of the blades, given that Elmore and others illustrated his scimitars with flared blades more often associated with falchions, and yet Salvatore's described them as being very light and fast weapons. The Lockwood design is a little too straight and sabre-like for my tastes, and since I'm not doing this for WOTC I guess I can take a few liberties there based on my interpretation of Salvatore's work. Of course, if you're getting paid, you rarely have that freedom, and that's just part of the job.
God above, I can go on, can't I? Such a nerd...
Pencil on Bristol, about 14x16 cropped. You can check out a partial rough of the sketch version here >>> [link] <<<
If I was half the colourist I'd wish to be, I'd light this as though he were looking at the sunrise (the reason I chose to flip the drawing, aside from my usual pique, is that I think having him look to the left reads more as "East" than looking to the right, simply because we subconciously assign "east" to "left" thanks to maps and compass roses. But perhaps I've overthought this...). If you want to take a swing at coloring this version, I don't mind, but keep in mind that this is very much a recognizable character and design, and he's wholly copywritten, trademarked and owned out the wazoo by Wizards of the Coast and R.A. Salvatore... for this reason, I don't plan to take this much farther myself (might be fun to play with screentones) simply because I can't do much more with it before it becomes an effective cost consumer... it was just something I wanted to do for fun and as an homage to a character that I've enjoyed for over a decade now.

Very nice. Me likey. Yes, I too was very annoyed at the first set of cover-art....Last I heard, elves did not look like monkeys. And praytell what's up with the stupid metal plate on his forehead...? Whatever.
I love the dramatic pose and the sheer intensity of his expression. Beautiful. The detail on the armor makes me green with envy. I love the brooch on his cloak. ^^ Too perfect. It took me a minute to work out which way you had the unicorn's head pointing, but I got it sorted out.
I thought: He has a tail! with much amusement, then saw it was Gwen's. ; Too much anime fanart. Anyway, though it's true she looks more like a lion than a panther, cats are darned hard to draw and you have my most sincere praise for having done so wonderfully.
I love the scimitars. Is he holding out Twinkle? It seems like that's the one, I can just see what looks like a jewel on the pommel.
I like it muchly. ^^ And I'm very, very impressed.

You gave him a different look from what I normally see. Much sharper around the face, and Quen actually looks the right size . On the old cover art, I always assumed that the artists looked at Drizzt's age and took it numerically without taking in the fact that he's an elf (by the end of the third trilogy he's around 60-70), so yeah, young boy. You definately pack a lot of detail in their without it getting overwhelming, particularly with the armour.

Inkthinker In reply to JesterSeven [2007-11-30 10:37:57 +0000 UTC]
The official versions of him nowadays are much more accurate and similar to this design... Todd Lockwood created the "canon" look for Drizzt that all WotC artists are required to refer to, and this is pretty close to that.
Yeah, I think the early artists worked without ever reading the books (as is usual), and so when given a description of the character as being 60-70 that's what they went with. Elmore was the only classical Realms artist whom I recall getting it right. I just pictured the character on those other covers as Zaknafien instead.
The only point on which I disagree with Lockwood's design (although I'd never push it if given the opportunity to draw Drizzt for proper WotC work) is in his take on the swords, as I mention in the Comments above. They should make a balanced pair, but they shouldn't look like they're a matching set forged side-by-side.
But I'm not a WotC artist, so I can nitpick like any other fanboy if I please.

Yeah, the swords come from two different places in the books (and Drizzt wears chain mail last I checked, but the leather looks so much cooler!). I'm not familiar with the names of the artists. Which image did Elmore do?

I think he did the covers to the Icewind Dale trilogy (Streams of Silver, etc). He made Drizzt's swords into broad-blades falchion-style scimitars rather than the thinner saber-style that makes more sense for the descriptions of his swordfighting, but at least he draw him looking young.
I don't recall if Drizzt wears chain or leather or both. He's also got magic bracers and anklets if I'm not mistaken, but I don't recall if anyone (including myself) ever bothers to include those.

JesterSeven In reply to Inkthinker [2007-12-02 05:54:29 +0000 UTC]
The bracers I'm unaware of (I know he nabbed a pair from Dantrag -think it was Dantrag- but put them on his ankles instead) but he does wear chain to start with at least (mithral I believe, possibly a gift from Brenuor). It's desribed in Passage to Dawn I think, or whichever book it was when he's on a ship that sinks thanks to Harkle forgetting that extradimensional things combined with other extradimensional things result in bad things happening.
(Just to go into unneccessary detail...)

Maybe it's just bracers on the ankles, then. It's been a while since I was deeply into the character... the last half-dozen Drizzt books feel like Salvatore uses a ghost writer to fill out the hard bits.

I know it's been some months, but I stopped by to see the picture again and saw this. Currently I'm reading The Orc King and wanted to see our boy.
He does have bracers and on his hands on ankles. He also wears a Mithril chain shirt made by one of Brunor's guys, it's described as being almost like elven chain mail, very light, and he wears it under another layer of clothing, if I'm remembering correctly.
Even though they mention the mithil chain shirt multiple times, in all the pictures I've seen he's still wearing leather armor.

I stopped reading them for a while after I noticed his writing getting repetative (might be just me though. I tend to have really good memory for things I've read). Been about 8 years or so since I've read Passage to Dawn so I might be a little off. Anyway, I think his new look suits him.

I would say after, since I was making a point in the Comments about how I don't think Twinkle and Icingdeath should be identically matched swords, the way they are in so many promotional materials. He got 'em at different times, in different places, and they have (I think) different origins, and while they compliment each other, they ought not look as though they were forged at the same time by the same swordsmith (unless I missed something in the canon that suggests they were... which is entirely possible).

Oh, yeah. It's Drizzt. Talk about one of the most beloved fantasy characters of all time. Of course, I'm still in high school, so I can't claim to be a long time fan, as I've only been reading Salvatore's work for a couple of years.
NEVERTHELESS, this is an awesome piece. Twinkle and Icedeath look perfectly fine to me, though I will admit that while I was playing Dark Alliance II (where Drizzt is an unlockable character) I was a little too busy running about, hacking enemies to tiny, icy bits than to study exactly how they looked. But, you know, they certainly look fine to me! Light and fast. The panther (I cannot remember how to spell his name, for the life of me) is a little bigger than I imagined, but I might be imagining wrong. XD
This picture would look really good colored, though (says the writer who can hardly color herself and draws all of her doodles on notebook paper). I think you ought to give it a try. It would be very, very interesting!
Gah, sorry to babbling. Drizzt gets my going. But, this is a very good piece, I like it a lot, and I'm certainly going to fave it! Great job!

Thanks, I'm glad you dig it.
Guenhwyvar is supposed to weigh either 400 or 600 lbs, which is about twice the weight of a real-world panther, either way, so I made her a big, big cat.
The only videogame Drizzt I've played with from the one stage in Demon Stone (XBox), but I think that was modeled off the Todd Lockwood version, which is (so far as I know) the "official" design.

It was about halfway through the game... you defend one of the gates into Mithril Hall from frost trolls, and for a brief part of the stage you get to take control of Drizzt.
Supposedly you can hack the game to make Drizzt playable on any levels, but I don't think there's a way to do it within the constraints of the normal game.

Thanks for appreciating it!
Drawing a character that I felt identified more closely with the characters than most depictions was my primary motivation. I can't slam the original Drizzt artists, 'cause I know how they came to the conclusions that they did back in the day (rarely does an artist get to really know the character they have to illustrate, since the art needs to be done prior to publication, and at most an artist gets a paragraph or two to work from). And nowadays we have guys like Todd Lockwood, who's Drizzt design makes for excellent canon to derive from.
But the old-man Drizzt on those classic covers still makes my eyeballs itch.
