Description
I'm actually not a HUGE Drizzt Do'Urden fan... I'm only just now getting around to reading Salvatore's "Hunter's Blades" trilogy (just finished the second book), and I enjoy it as a sort of modern continuation of classic pulp fantasy... elves and dwarves and giants and orcs, oh my, I got a serious soft spot for all of it. Of course, it didn't hurt that I also just picked up Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone for the X-Box, which has some really sweet art direction (and guest-stars everyone's favorite rogue drow). All of this has kind of come together to tip my hand into a little light fan art.The whole Drizzt series was just getting started while I was in high school, so I got a bit of nostalgic fondness for the character. I was always very irritated at the early portraits of him, wherein artists kept illustrating him as an old man, because anyone who knows ANYTHING about Drizzt knows that he's a pretty young elf, less than 100, which makes him in many ways more the equivalent of a twentysomething.
If you're not familiar with the character, he's the creation of fantasy novelist R.A. Salvatore, and a standard of the D&D Forgotten Realms universe. He's quite the iconic figure to fantasy fans, an outcast from his people and society, adventuring with his great panther familiar through the wild northlands of the world.
D&D illustrator Todd Lockwood nailed him pretty well in the big 3E revamp of the whole D&D universe, though, and this illustration is based heavily on his canonical design. I took some liberties here and there, espescially with his twin swords... while there's a very solid and set design for these blades now, I don't recall that they're supposed to be a matched set of identical swords. It's been a few years since I read it all, but I seem to recall that he picked up Twinkle in the Underdark, and Icingdeath in the white dragon's lair, so I always thought they should look slightly different from each other. There's also a lot of argument over the shape of the blades, given that Elmore and others illustrated his scimitars with flared blades more often associated with falchions, and yet Salvatore's described them as being very light and fast weapons. The Lockwood design is a little too straight and sabre-like for my tastes, and since I'm not doing this for WOTC I guess I can take a few liberties there based on my interpretation of Salvatore's work. Of course, if you're getting paid, you rarely have that freedom, and that's just part of the job.
God above, I can go on, can't I? Such a nerd...
Pencil on Bristol, about 14x16 cropped. You can check out a partial rough of the sketch version here >>> [link] <<<
If I was half the colourist I'd wish to be, I'd light this as though he were looking at the sunrise (the reason I chose to flip the drawing, aside from my usual pique, is that I think having him look to the left reads more as "East" than looking to the right, simply because we subconciously assign "east" to "left" thanks to maps and compass roses. But perhaps I've overthought this...). If you want to take a swing at coloring this version, I don't mind, but keep in mind that this is very much a recognizable character and design, and he's wholly copywritten, trademarked and owned out the wazoo by Wizards of the Coast and R.A. Salvatore... for this reason, I don't plan to take this much farther myself (might be fun to play with screentones) simply because I can't do much more with it before it becomes an effective cost consumer... it was just something I wanted to do for fun and as an homage to a character that I've enjoyed for over a decade now.

Beautiful work. Thank you so much for sharing this with me in our discussion at PencilJack. Seeing roughs and finals really helps me out, because it takes away most of my fear of mistakes. Knowing that you used another color and stripped it away later really helps too.

Glad to help. Like I said over at PJ... using a colored pencil was probably the most revolutionary flip to my way of thinking about drawing since the day I realised I had to buckle down and really learn proper anatomy and perspective. When you're not afraid to make mistakes, you take more chances and you discover more stuff just by accident and practice, and you can still get a perfectly clean drawing out of it.
Another good tool to use alongside the red pencil is a kneaded eraser... you can use it to softly remove the red pencil you put down without erasing too much.
It's important to know that with red pencil, it's almost impossible to erase it completely... don't even try. It tends to get messy, mostly with smears. But even so, it should strip out pretty cleanly in Photoshop and allow you to create clean pencil drawings.

Being a huge Drizzt and Company fan this is a great piece. You're right Todd Lockwood's depiction of Drizzt is dead on. I like your design for Twinkle and Icingdeath, they are exactly as I imagine them and honestly better than that of Lockwoods design. Instant fav and keep up the great work!

Wow, excellent depiction. As soon as I saw it, like you mentioned, I was happy that I found a pic where he doesnt look like hes friggan elderly, but I think that that mostly had to do with the fantasy drawing styles carried over from the 70's and 80's. I take this as inspiration to figure out digital brush strokes, and to clean up my sloppiness lol...

I just figured it had to do with artists who illustrate characters based on short descriptions (which is often all the cover artist gets). Most of the time, nobody actually gets to read more than a tiny, tiny fraction of the source material, espescially for early printings. So if Drizzt is described as being 70, and the artist isn't familiar with the concept that an elf at 70 is more like a human at 17, then they make a natural mistake.

Yeah, baby! Drixxt rules! Gwen is huge! yeah, I too hated the way early artists portrayed Drizzt. He looked more like a greyskinned human than an-always-youthful elf. He isn't supposed to look his age. I think you portrayed him quite nicely though.

Well, I think it's pointless for me to repeat what they've said so many times.
My friend, you have tallent! You have mad skillz! And you have captured Drizzt PERFECTLY! I've only seen one person color this, but I don't believe it needs to be colored at all.
I've read almost every book that involves our drow friend there. I agree with your decision to curve his scimitars(sp?) more and thining them out. Back in Homeland, when he held them for the first time in Zak's training room, I've envisioned his blades in that same way. No matter how they were drawn or discribed otherwise. They're an extention of his body. His fighting style is not rigid, but fluid, so why should his blades be straight if they match him so well? They shouldn't, and so I give you props *clap*.
I can see where people might critisize Guenhwyvar, But, You're right again, she is a LARGE panther from another plain. Large and sleak, with strength enough to rip the throat of a giant out with one bite. The angle she is at would naturally make her seem larger than she actually is, so that is another reason I have no quarel with her. Shes perfect.
Drizzt himself...Young, as he is only what like 60 or 70, Yet still strong and graceful and poised for action. His armor is supurb and well detailed. In my opinion, it rivals that of many other pictures of him.
Great job. I'd love to see more fan arts from you, Zak, Artemis, Bruenor, Cattie-brie, Wulfgar, Regis; any of them, if you did (though I don't expect it to happen), I have no doubt in my mind you would do them justice.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I'm most glad when a good fan of the series is pleased, 'cause then I feel like I really did it right.
The design is mostly influenced by Todd Lockwood's, which is the current standard for D&D I think. I don't have any immediate plans to do another piece of Drizzt art, but it could happen... we'll see if the next novel hooks me better than the last couple.

Thank you for drawing him as a young elf. Indeed you are correct, Drizzt is relatively young for an elf and twinkle and icingdeath are not matched . This is well drawn. Also not a huge Drizzt fan, but a friend of mine is and he insists on informing us all about Drizzt... every time Drow come up (as though none of us knew what a dark elf was or that there was a Drizzt)... lol. Great pic. I really like the mood and the expression here. I also checked out the sketch and I must say I like the way the cat turned out in the final peice as opposed to the opposite way behind him.

Drizzt and Guen I read The Dark Elf Trilogy something about 3 years ago and I rememberd that I just fell in love with the main character and the book as well
and also I couldn't understand why on all covers for this books Drizzt looks like old man
and something that I noticed - he's often portrayed with unicorn's brooches, pendants - I don't remember anything in first 3 books what is connected with this creature - You also have drew him with unicorn brooch can You tell me where does it come from? I don't know maybe there is something in next Drizzt trilogy that I
unfortunately haven't read yet...
hehe and It's funny, because i recognize him on a miniature, before I knew the title and saw a big picture anyway I like this pic very much, You did great job here

Personally i think you did Guenwyvar very good, as well as Drizzt's swords, but when he emerges from the underdark in Sojourn, he does still have an identical set of scimitars.
He gets Icingdeath in Ingleoakastamizilian's lair with Wulfgar, and later gets Twinkle from one of the Harpells... the guy who lives in the tower you only see at night i believe, forgot his name however.
did i forget to mention im a hardcore nerd?

Aren't we all, for some subject or another. The ability to recall fantasy fiction trivia is no less weird than the ability to recall obscure sports trivia.
So yeah, then Icingdeath and Twinkle shouldn't really resemble each other at all, aside from both being the same sort of sword and (presumably) of similar weight and balance.
I just finished The Two Swords, and I gotta say I was pretty disappointed at the end of the whole thing. I mean, I suppose a lot of significant events occured for the larger Drizzt mythos, but as a stand-alone trilogy that ending was weak, weak, weak...

I read it some time ago, but I don't remember a lot about it... one of the things about Salvatore's writing is that it doesn't tend to really stick in my mind the way an author like Pratchett or Martin does. By this point I just remember the main characters, to some degree... I don't recall much at all about the adventures.

Not bad at all! My only suggestions would be that it might could use some stronger highlights here and there to help define the forms more. Also, be wary of high-saturation colors that look vibrant and intense on a screen, but won't print at all. Blues are espescially bad for this, but it's something to be aware of across the board.
