Description I'm actually not a HUGE Drizzt Do'Urden fan... I'm only just now getting around to reading Salvatore's "Hunter's Blades" trilogy (just finished the second book), and I enjoy it as a sort of modern continuation of classic pulp fantasy... elves and dwarves and giants and orcs, oh my, I got a serious soft spot for all of it. Of course, it didn't hurt that I also just picked up Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone for the X-Box, which has some really sweet art direction (and guest-stars everyone's favorite rogue drow). All of this has kind of come together to tip my hand into a little light fan art.

The whole Drizzt series was just getting started while I was in high school, so I got a bit of nostalgic fondness for the character. I was always very irritated at the early portraits of him, wherein artists kept illustrating him as an old man, because anyone who knows ANYTHING about Drizzt knows that he's a pretty young elf, less than 100, which makes him in many ways more the equivalent of a twentysomething.

If you're not familiar with the character, he's the creation of fantasy novelist R.A. Salvatore, and a standard of the D&D Forgotten Realms universe. He's quite the iconic figure to fantasy fans, an outcast from his people and society, adventuring with his great panther familiar through the wild northlands of the world.

D&D illustrator Todd Lockwood nailed him pretty well in the big 3E revamp of the whole D&D universe, though, and this illustration is based heavily on his canonical design. I took some liberties here and there, espescially with his twin swords... while there's a very solid and set design for these blades now, I don't recall that they're supposed to be a matched set of identical swords. It's been a few years since I read it all, but I seem to recall that he picked up Twinkle in the Underdark, and Icingdeath in the white dragon's lair, so I always thought they should look slightly different from each other. There's also a lot of argument over the shape of the blades, given that Elmore and others illustrated his scimitars with flared blades more often associated with falchions, and yet Salvatore's described them as being very light and fast weapons. The Lockwood design is a little too straight and sabre-like for my tastes, and since I'm not doing this for WOTC I guess I can take a few liberties there based on my interpretation of Salvatore's work. Of course, if you're getting paid, you rarely have that freedom, and that's just part of the job.

God above, I can go on, can't I? Such a nerd...

Pencil on Bristol, about 14x16 cropped. You can check out a partial rough of the sketch version here >>> [link] <<<

If I was half the colourist I'd wish to be, I'd light this as though he were looking at the sunrise (the reason I chose to flip the drawing, aside from my usual pique, is that I think having him look to the left reads more as "East" than looking to the right, simply because we subconciously assign "east" to "left" thanks to maps and compass roses. But perhaps I've overthought this...). If you want to take a swing at coloring this version, I don't mind, but keep in mind that this is very much a recognizable character and design, and he's wholly copywritten, trademarked and owned out the wazoo by Wizards of the Coast and R.A. Salvatore... for this reason, I don't plan to take this much farther myself (might be fun to play with screentones) simply because I can't do much more with it before it becomes an effective cost consumer... it was just something I wanted to do for fun and as an homage to a character that I've enjoyed for over a decade now.

I find a good rule of thumb is to maintain an average saturation point of around 50 or so, almost never higher than 80. There are, of course, exceptions to this, but it's not a bad benchmark point to start from.

I always hated the original cover artwork for the Salvatore books. I think Todd Lockwood is doing a hell of a job on the recoverings of the books that they're workin' on right now (republished hardcovers with Lockwood art *drools*) and never thought I'd see another artist portray Drizzt anywhere near as well. I am, apparently, proved wrong. I absolutely love the details in this piece. The differences in the two swords (I always thought it odd to portray them as matched as well) and the blade shapes (as that's basically what honest-to-God Saracen/Mid-east scimitars look like) are crowning details to the sort of people who have read the books/know what weapons look like. Anyway, I'm rambling. Brilliant work, the community (D&D, Fantasy, FR, etc.) salutes you.

Brilliant work! I most definitely want to take a shot at inking and colouring this once my household goods shipment arrives.

I started reading the Drizzt books in high school, too, and share your thoughts on the character design. Jeff Easley is a sweetheart of a man, but I never liked his rendition of Drizzt. Larry Elmore's work was slightly better and Todd Lockwood improved even more with 3E. However, like you, the "twin" swords thing has bugged me to NO end!

I love the composition on this, especially the unique angle. Great work on the armour and the subtle differences between the swords. Yes, they are indeed two DIFFERENT swords!!

Bravo Zulu!

the leaves scattered about in the air along with that really lovly flow to his hair ( i really like the way you've not drawn itas sperate strands but rather fusing back into itself.. i must try that out myself sometime) really work to illustrate the breeze and adds a bit of motion to the image. the lengh of detail to which you've gone on hs armour really helps to build up the charater, however, i do find that it creates something of a contrast between him and the rest of the b/g, leaving it and the panther looking a little on the plan and 'naked' side. however, as you said, the amount of time you can devote to this is an issue... though perssonally, i would have emphisied the impression of fur on the panther.
the submerged foot of the pantehr is a wonderful touch, you really know how water works which is most deffianytly a feat in itself.

Wow. You do have alot to say about this piece XD.
I dunno...pretty fantastic. I can't even think of a thing to critique. I really like the added backdrop. It gives him something to push off of. Really adds alot, by building up the character and stuff. Just great composition. And you're right, that panther is better looking than the profile one.

Great drawing, goes without saying. I have a question though- Is this just very darkened pencil, or is there some ink in there too? I know theres pencil in it, but some of the more refined points look like they could be ink. I was just wondering, because I'm working on being able to finalize things moreso with pencils instead of ink.

I really like the design of the blades, especially the one that he's holding in his left hand, and the armor, but your armor is always great.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to Xeileign [2006-01-03 01:35:16 +0000 UTC]

Nope, just pencil and nothing else. I did play with the levels considerably to darken it and lose any light smudging, but that was all.

I like the armor too, but it's largely Lockwood's design. I think this is what my editors have been wanting when they ask for "leather armor", though, so I'll probably do more designs made of interwoven straps and flaps in the future.

I was pretty annoyed at the "official" look for Drizzt's scimitars... seeing as they look nothing like how they were described in the book. One of the two (Twinkle, I think) is described as having a pommel shaped like a panther.

I finally got curious and bothered to dig in my brainvault, and as I recall Twinkle was a gift from a wizard on the surface, one of the Harpells I think, during the Icewind Dale Triology. Drizzt lost both of his original adamantite swords... I seem to remember a monster snapping one in half at some point... I always thought that Twinkle was a damned silly name for a magical sword of asswhuppery though, but then again, I'm not gonna cruise up to a drow and tell him he's got a nancy name for his blade. Even a relatively friendly one like Drizzt.

I always loved Drizzt but hated the art of him on the covers. (I also didn't like his voice in Baldur's gate. I'm picky.) He always has this jacked up hair and he's frequently blue for some reason. Your version is far cooler looking. I dig the strappy armor and the blades look more sleek, more, I dunno, elven?

And to wrap up this excessively long comment, you should totally do a picture of Zaknefein. That's just my opinion.

Sir-ChaosS [2005-12-29 15:49:29 +0000 UTC]

Hey man, another excellent piece. I too always thought Drizzt's swords should look a little dissimilar. I've always pictured Twinkle as a bright silvery scimitar with a bluish tint (thats just me though), and Icingdeath (wich wasn't named until Sea of Swords) as a brilliant white. As far as Guenhwyvar goes, I think you nailed her perfectly. She is very large, and masculine (she was even a male in the early books.) My only crit is that in my mind the sword should curve more, I never saw them as that straight.

Note of useless trivia -- there are (if I'm not mistaken) 17 Drizzt novels.

Would've been a nice touch to throw in a couple of other characters in the background somewhere to really sell Drizzt.
But overall another great work. keep em coming

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Inkthinker In reply to Sir-ChaosS [2005-12-30 01:22:35 +0000 UTC]

Heck, these are more curved than the "official" versions...

Which are not, as I had thought, actually identical, but they are very similar to each other, and terribly straight. I wonder if Lockwood knows why a curved sword is a more superior slashing weapon than a straight one... if I ever get a chance I suppose I'd ask him. Though, given that he worked directly with Salvatore on the design for Drizzt and his weapons, etc., I don't suppose I ought to question much.

Sir-ChaosS In reply to Inkthinker [2005-12-30 14:01:28 +0000 UTC]

Inkthinker In reply to FWACATA [2005-12-29 19:42:31 +0000 UTC]

Yep. I think "Homeland" is the first one.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Sir-ChaosS In reply to FWACATA [2005-12-29 15:56:43 +0000 UTC]

It sort of starts with Dark Elf. Salvatore wrote Icewindale first, but Dark Elf comes first in the story. A good friend of mine made me read them in that order (Dark Elf, then Icewindale,) by then i had caught up with the way they were written. I am really glad he did (make me read them in that order that is) then when I finished the series (i think then there were only 7 or 8 books), I read some other works, and went back and read them in the order Salvatore wrote them to get his thought process (for loss of a better term). So I recommend you start with Homeland, (or the Dark Elf Collector's Trilogy if you can still find it.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FWACATA In reply to Sir-ChaosS [2005-12-29 16:15:09 +0000 UTC]

The Trilogy is the Book with all three collected in one right?

then it's onto:

Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sir-ChaosS In reply to FWACATA [2005-12-29 16:41:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah you got it. you can find collecter editions of all the trilogies in the series. Except for The Hunter's Blade Trilogy but we will get to that later.
OK so the series goes like this (as the story goes not as he wrote them):

The Dark Elf Trilogy (3 books: Homeland, Exile, Sojourn)
The Icewindale Trilogy (3 books: The Crystal Shard, The Halfling's Gem, Streams of Silver)
Legacy of the Drow (4 books: Legacy, Starless Night, Siege of Darkness, Passage to Dawn)
Paths of Darkness (4 books: The Silent Blade, The Spine of the World, Servant of the Shard, Sea of Swords)
The Hunter's Blades (3 books: The Two Swords, Thousand Orcs, The Lone Drow)

As a huge drow fan, I have to say that this is a beautiful piece. Drizzt himself is a lovely creation (although the Hunters Blade Trilogy is easily the weakest of the lot) and you've pretty much nailed him (thanks also for acknowledging Todd Lockwood - as an Uber Nerd of the first order, I can see the influence right away here!). I actually find very little crit - the lines are smooth and the picture is well detailed, and as you said - Drizzt isn't an old man! (Gah, I hate that...). Obviously I'd love to see this coloured...
