Description
I'm actually not a HUGE Drizzt Do'Urden fan... I'm only just now getting around to reading Salvatore's "Hunter's Blades" trilogy (just finished the second book), and I enjoy it as a sort of modern continuation of classic pulp fantasy... elves and dwarves and giants and orcs, oh my, I got a serious soft spot for all of it. Of course, it didn't hurt that I also just picked up Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone for the X-Box, which has some really sweet art direction (and guest-stars everyone's favorite rogue drow). All of this has kind of come together to tip my hand into a little light fan art.The whole Drizzt series was just getting started while I was in high school, so I got a bit of nostalgic fondness for the character. I was always very irritated at the early portraits of him, wherein artists kept illustrating him as an old man, because anyone who knows ANYTHING about Drizzt knows that he's a pretty young elf, less than 100, which makes him in many ways more the equivalent of a twentysomething.
If you're not familiar with the character, he's the creation of fantasy novelist R.A. Salvatore, and a standard of the D&D Forgotten Realms universe. He's quite the iconic figure to fantasy fans, an outcast from his people and society, adventuring with his great panther familiar through the wild northlands of the world.
D&D illustrator Todd Lockwood nailed him pretty well in the big 3E revamp of the whole D&D universe, though, and this illustration is based heavily on his canonical design. I took some liberties here and there, espescially with his twin swords... while there's a very solid and set design for these blades now, I don't recall that they're supposed to be a matched set of identical swords. It's been a few years since I read it all, but I seem to recall that he picked up Twinkle in the Underdark, and Icingdeath in the white dragon's lair, so I always thought they should look slightly different from each other. There's also a lot of argument over the shape of the blades, given that Elmore and others illustrated his scimitars with flared blades more often associated with falchions, and yet Salvatore's described them as being very light and fast weapons. The Lockwood design is a little too straight and sabre-like for my tastes, and since I'm not doing this for WOTC I guess I can take a few liberties there based on my interpretation of Salvatore's work. Of course, if you're getting paid, you rarely have that freedom, and that's just part of the job.
God above, I can go on, can't I? Such a nerd...
Pencil on Bristol, about 14x16 cropped. You can check out a partial rough of the sketch version here >>> [link] <<<
If I was half the colourist I'd wish to be, I'd light this as though he were looking at the sunrise (the reason I chose to flip the drawing, aside from my usual pique, is that I think having him look to the left reads more as "East" than looking to the right, simply because we subconciously assign "east" to "left" thanks to maps and compass roses. But perhaps I've overthought this...). If you want to take a swing at coloring this version, I don't mind, but keep in mind that this is very much a recognizable character and design, and he's wholly copywritten, trademarked and owned out the wazoo by Wizards of the Coast and R.A. Salvatore... for this reason, I don't plan to take this much farther myself (might be fun to play with screentones) simply because I can't do much more with it before it becomes an effective cost consumer... it was just something I wanted to do for fun and as an homage to a character that I've enjoyed for over a decade now.

Oh wow... just... wow...
your lineart is crisp, your anatomy is brilliant...
My only niggle would be the panther. I work with cats so I'm retentive =d the curve of his jaw leading up to his ear and his neck and continuing arm makes him seem rather fat (and stocky). If I saw just that I would think he was Prince Ginger, the 24lb grumpy cat that occasionally comes into our clinic.
Then again he would have a LOT of force in his pounce because of that stockiness.
Either way, still an instant fav!!!!!!!!

Yeah, and she's more leonine that panther, but that's 'cause I had more lion reference than panther...
Part of the reason I made her so bulky is because she's supposed to weigh 400 lbs. according to the text of the most recent book I read, so I wanted her to look huge and heavy. I figured that the curve of the ribs was close enough for the curve around his legs, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's off.

I thought Twinkle was a gift from the Harpells... ah, well I've hardly researched it, though I've read all R.A.'s stuff up to The Orc King...

No, he got Twinkle from one of the Harpell wizards, the one with the tower on the lake and the boy 'rentice. (Just got done with the book, but can't remember wizard's name. He weren't important.) ^^

Yeah, I could tell that with the face. Panthers have a ... slightly different face.
BTW, don't take this as bitchy critisism, it's just I like to research points and persue them (I'm retentive like that). Female tigers, on average, weight 300lbs. Male tigers, on average, weight 500lbs, and they're surprisingly scrawny.
But yeah, I can understand you want to emphasise the 'big heavy cat' thing there. And I must say, with that emphasis in mind, you're spot on

The panther's anatomy is excellent, but the head seems a little big or masculine. I'm sure this is the look you were going for, but I thought panthers had a slightly sleeker appearance than most other big cats.
I'm probably completely wrong. Anyway, always love your line art.

-questions- in the sketch there are 2 panthers right? so where you trying to figure out where to put his panther friend or was their going to be two panthers?
I love Drizzt, I've played demon stone and it was really good.. but really short, I was told that R.A. Salvatore had a hand in writing the script for the game or maybe not. not to sure, but anywho I love the wanter effect you put with the panthers paw in the water AWESOME! the whole sketch is pretty bad ass. Keep up the work.

Yeah, Drizzt only has one panther familiar.
The more profiled panther was the initial drawing, but it was too static, too dull... the second one was the intended final, but I didn't bother to completely erase the first one because I knew it wouldn't be seen in the final anyhow.

Wow... and I simply thought Drizzt Do'Urden was just an unlockable character in Boulders Gate Dark Alliance 1/2. Shows how much I know!

Well, there's a reason why he's the unlockable in almost EVERY D&D game...

C'mon, you can't tell me "there's a reason why he's the unlockable in almost EVERY D&D game" and not tell me what that reason is... unless of course you are referring to your above comments? Enlighten me please!!!!

Because he's possibly the most famous, iconic character of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise.
No, seriously, Salvatore's written some dozen-plus novels surrounding Drizzt and his companions and his adventures since the early 90's, and there's about a half-dozen or more peripherally related series that have spun off from the same. You could probably find the early ones in just about any used bookstore, and certainly in any good public library. If you like classic, traditional old swords-n-sorcery fantasy then they're worth checking out.

I wish.
Or Seed, or Jujika... any of those guys make my work look like gold. But it is, in the end, just fanart... they'd have to want to do it on their own time, and I wouldn't want to waste their skills on something that essentially dead-ends at a certain stage. If someone volounteers that's great, but I won't ask.

JuWho? Seed, Warlocks, Atombasher . . . all good colorists but when I think of color I think of Dan. Maybe Brian Rebner these days since I met him during con season, but Dan's the man. I'd think he'd be free since the Brooks/ Danimation team is all but kaput.
And I totally understand about asking, but dreaming is okay . . . isn't it?
