Description -MAJOR EDIT-

Used the old "mirror trick" to fix one of her eyes and the cant of her lips... they were just slightly off, which in some ways is worse than being totally off... it's like a mosquito behind your eyes. At any rate, I think it's much better now, but I doubt anyone else will notice.

You might notice that I totally changed the layout, though. Mixed it with the original thumbnail doodles and sized it up like a wallpaper. And if you like it, you're welcome to use it as such.

-END EDIT-

EXTRA! EXTRA!

threw down some pretty sweet colors on this character. Check 'em out! [link]

Finished pencils for an armor design of my own creation... just playing around, not sure how I'll apply this character.

Made of very strong but very light metals, capable of withstanding light attacks easily, medium attacks to some degree, and will at least reduce the damage of heavy attacks. It's not going to hold up against most arrows or anything but a light pistol crossbow, either. The armor is designed to be very articulate, but this added complexity requires a good deal of maintainance and care. The armor can be put on by a person alone with enough preperation, but it's best to have someone to assist in the fine fitting. Beneath the metal are layers of leather, fine chain mesh at the pits, waist and elbows, and an underlayer of silk (both breathes and is very strong). If you'd like a closer look at the gloves, they're the same as this design from a while back: [link]

The grommets around the neckline serve as bolt holes to attach a gorget (neck protection), and a helm completes the suit. Both are left off here because... ummm... it looks cooler and has more character this way, I guess. But I'll probably do another couple illustrations with this outfit, when I have some time. I like this armor design a lot. I'd like to do a short comic around this character, but then again I'd like to do a short comic around almost every character I create. *shrug*

Total time for both illustrations: approx. 4 hours, both drawn on 9x2 Bristol with a 4H and HB pencil. A ruler and two erasers (one soft, one kneaded) were the only other tools. No particular reference used, but the boots are straight-up early Yukito Kishiro, and the elbows spark shades of Ahihiko Yoshida.

There's some stuff in my most recent Journal, and scattered through previous entries. My best suggestion would be to participate in a community like Penciljack.com, where people focus on improving their skills and joining the professional comics field. There's a lot of people who can help you in pretty much any facet of comics publishing right there.

wow thats super indepth. nice pose by the way the only thing i kinda dont like is the elbow pads they way they attach makes them look flimsy. like they would slide around if they ever took a fall or blow. mabey add a duel strap with buckles on the outside or something.

good work though

Inkthinker In reply to ERIKEXETER [2005-08-16 23:09:05 +0000 UTC]

THanks!

What isn't clear here is that the elbow plate is also attached to the floating ring that rests directly below the plate and is held in place by the forearm armor.

I pretty much pulled the idea for the elbow plates wholesale from Akihiko Yoshida's Vagrant Story designs, 'cause I like 'em. Doesn't make 'em practical, though.

Ooh, awesome. I love hoe "functional" this looks, everything seem to have some sort of use instead of just being eyecandy details.

Oh btw I am colouring your gunslinger!

Neat! Let me know when you post it.

Yeah, maintaining a sense of functionality is usually one of my design themes. I don't much care for randomized "it looks cool" design (though I do that myself often enough), I like things to look neat AND be useful. And a character like this certainly has enough functional needs so that one doesn't really have to just add stuff for the sake of it "looking cool".

Yeah, well, it's neater than blasting a huge watermark across the page.

Which I did anyway. Heh...

I think that's about right, yes. Of course, that's cumulative work time. Include breaks and mistakes, and it might go up to 6 hours. A couple standups like this are only useful for maintaining consistency in design for later use... the real work comes when you try to apply the character to anything else.

The real test of ones skill is being able to draw all that armor and in different perspectives and settings.

Inkthinker In reply to ASZSephiroth [2005-08-16 23:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Doesn't faze me too much. It's just a matter of getting the underlying shapes right, and then building on top of that.

But I suppose I oughtta prove it rather than talk about it, right ?

I love the details! It would be nice to have one image of the helm, either on her head or to the side, just to be able to see what it looks like. The armour is really awesome!

I love the little Inkthinker emblems on the pouches. Did anyone else notice them, I wonder?
I have to fave this. Something this concrete and awesome really earns it's spot in any favorites section.
Now you just have to animate it… which would be so f'ing tedious.

It's a awsome desing, but she would have to constantly cast "move silent" in order to furfill her missions. Unless she's a gunhow barberian warrior that just loves it when the fight comes to her.

This is really an awsome drawing.

That is just incredible! Very proportional and well-design. Really like the details and the shading on the armor. No reference you said? .. that made me jealous.. I guess it only come as natural to some people. Great job!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to Juene [2005-08-16 12:05:28 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't say it comes naturally... it takes a lot of practice and time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Juene In reply to Inkthinker [2005-08-16 12:22:58 +0000 UTC]

And that sure pays off. I wouldn't be able to come up with such a great design like that if I wanted to. I just think some people naturally have better sense of design than some. I practiced too you know, hehe.

Well, I'm thoroughly impressed with your works. Keep it coming!
