Description The Gutter exists in perpetual shadow and fog, thin alleyways at the bottom of man-made canyons, below the criss-crossed bridges and balconies of those blessed with higher status. Down here life is harsh, sharp and short for anyone without the strength or skills to survive these predatory pathways. At the very bottom of the gently sloping streets lies The Lip, that roughshod extension of ramshackle structures that leans out over the infinite cloud-filled depths, below the City and stretching out to the horizons past The Wall...

More of Bibliotech, inked 100% digitally in Comic Studio.

-EDIT 013009-

Wow, it got a DD! It's so oooold.

I think this might be the first thing I ever inked completely in Comic Studio. It would have been on that old Graphire 4x5 I started with, too. It was (and I suppose still is) an early image in a sadly aborted story I thought I knew how to write before I actually tried to sit down and write it, and it all went thbbbt. SO in the meantime Bibliotech represents a collection of concept illustrations that I'm totally sure I'll pick up again if I can ever wrap my head around the idea of thematic character plotting. Or when I give up and just blow out a portfolio of random imagery.

As if the internet didn't have enough of those.

I still like this image. I'm pretty sure I could do a better job if I did it again, and I probably will.

I love multilevel city scenes such as this! The black and white works very well here. I like how there is plant life at the top.

Thanks! I'm a big fan of layered environments heavy on the vertical depth. I think it might be because I grew up in rural and suburban neighborhoods, so for me the closed-in, tightly packed spaces, like Kowloon Walled City, or the alleyways of old London or Prague, or even Manhattan... that represents the exotic. I like riffing off that.

You're welcome! I know EXACTLY what you mean! Tall, vertical environment like that, like a big city or even a rainforest...so much more interesting than flat suburbia!

It makes my brain go to a place in its mental library and look at art. Appearently, my brain sees this pic as something Shel Silverstein would draw if hwe were holding a seance for Poe, all while telling a story by Lemony Snicket. Really, this peice is a quite a devastatingly imaginative work, allowing for the viewer to take multiple aspects of it and turn them into personal and/or moral perspectives.

What else is there to say from me? This is an excellent and beautiful picture.

I love the starkness of the black and white, as well as the framing through the houses and under a bridge. Brilliant use of negative space. The solitary man walking past the spurting drainpipe makes it especially poignent.

comic studio is a software or what?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to zaratus [2004-12-11 10:28:03 +0000 UTC]

Japanese paperless manga software.

Basically a digital paint program dedicated to ink art simulation coupled with a series of page layout tools and functions, with some interesting spins of it's own.

It's SUPPOSED to be coming out in the U.S, SOME-day... but there's some sort of clog in the works that's preventing the company from making a decision on a US distributor (or so I'm given to understand). Humouring The Fates (the studio I work at) is a distributor of the animation program from the same company, and I think it's safe to say that we'd love to be able to bring Comic Studio to the States, but it's not in our hands at the moment. So I have a beta for the English version that's like, two releases behind the latest Japanese version, and I practice on it when I can.

Write a letter to Celsys, let 'em know you heard about this ComicStudio software and really want to see it distributed in the U.S. Mention my studio, maybe we'll get the contract, but even if someone else was doing it, at least it'd be OUT here, you know?
