Description
Tentatively done with this for now... it's not a great stitch, but I can do a better scan when I get my rig back up again. Until then, I gotta make do with a li'l bitty scanner, and this was worked up a little large.14x17, pencil on bristol, about 4-6 hours to completion. You can see rough and partial stages in my Scraps, here -> [link] and over here -> [link] and read up on the story behind this picture if, you know, you're into that sort of thing. Whatever, I'm not here to judge.
Hey barkeep, hit me!!

This is pencil on Bristol. I like inking digitally, but for pencil work I still prefer real pencils.

I use Manga Studio for most of my digital inking, or I use Photoshop.
Bristol board... heavy cardstock board for illustration. Old school.

Gawd, daymn, this one won me over. <3 Great linework, angle, and anatomy man. The only real quirk (and a tiny quirk at that) that comes out at me are the creases of her left underarm-- they look a bit strange. But that's a tough freakin' angle to pull off with the arm bent the way it is. Great great work!

Wow, your sketches and drawing are really awesome beyond belief! What do you do for a job? Are you an animator for some company or do you illustrate for fantasy books?

Actually, I do both when I can. I animate full-time for Humouring the Fates Inc., a production studio in Florida, and on the side I freelance occasionally, usually as a fantasy illustrator for RPG publishers. I don't do the latter as often as I'd like, but the former tends to take up a lot of my energy.

that's awesome! I went to AIP for animation and graduated in 2000-2001, which I guess was a tough year for animators, plus my tape wasn't the best....so I gave up for the time being. Now, I'm going to CCAD for Graphic Design but I'm really try my shot at animation again!

It's a pretty rough industry for production-types, these days... all things considered, there's more work in storyboards and pre/post work than in actual animation. Even I spend a good chunk of my time doing all sorts of things except animation. And a lot of places only hire for the length of the current project on an independant contract basis, which makes job security into whatever you can get next.

I have trouble with complex, large-scale machines like trains, planes and automobiles. I essentially either gotta trace a photo (which I don't like doing, 'cause it makes me feel dirty) or I gotta break it down into really basic shapes, and even then it's not easy.

well, i find that when i improve my drawing skills, i also find other things much easier to draw, even things that i haven't practiced drawing before. although i don't think i could even go near trains, planes or automobiles yet. could i ask you how long you have been drawing? just so it gives me some impression on how far i've got to go, i've been drawing for about a year.

Inkthinker In reply to sweet-cuppin-cakes [2006-03-23 01:40:23 +0000 UTC]
Ooooh... depends. I've been drawing pretty much my whole life, and I'm 30. I've been getting regularly paid to do it for about 10-11 years, and I've been getting paid enough to pay the bills for about 6 years.
In my general experience, it takes around 3-5 years of steady practice, study and work before you get good at any particular "style", and you may change styles again and again. And of course, you can spend your whole life learning and relearning technique and structure, which underlies all well-built work.

wow... i spose ive got a whole 15 years to get as good as you then? well, that certainly puts things in perspective, which funnily enough, im bad at. i guess i got a fair bit of practice study and work to do then eh? and as for studying, i hope you dont mind if i study your work? keh, youve given me a fairly large amount of ideas as it is... and lately ive realised it takes a few hours of work to produce something satisfying, time which i was certainly unwilling to spend at the start of last year.
as for being payed, do you get paid per picture you produce, or hourly? or perhaps some other method of payment?

Oh, I don't know... there's plenty of guys younger than me who are much better, and I've followed a very crooked path. It's largely useless to compare one's self to others in terms of age and skill, because most everyone's experiences as an artist are somewhat unique to their time and place. I wanted to draw comics, I ended up drawing kid's illustrations, I tried for comics again and sucked at it BADLY, I ended up in animation and it turned out I wasn't half bad at that.
But I don't recommend that path to anyone, really... it's quite twisted.

sweet-cuppin-cakes In reply to Inkthinker [2006-03-23 23:56:42 +0000 UTC]
twisted in what way? in a way that it takes too long and you have to re-learn things, etc? but anyways you dont look too bad at comics from what ive seen ;D
you know, when you said tracing photos made you feel dirty... the main way the dutch masters learned to paint was to copy other famous artists paintings to the best of their ability, and just by doing that they picked up a great deal of skills and techniques with which to develop their own styles. i dont think it would be such a bad idea if you did trace photos to learn how to draw those kinds of things.

Inkthinker In reply to sweet-cuppin-cakes [2006-03-24 00:46:11 +0000 UTC]
Yes, that's some of it... everyones career path tends to be a little different, and mine has been such that I tend to have bounced around a bit, so rather than being focused on doing one or two things very well.
I don't deny the value of tracing and mimickry, but you can't cross the line of claiming either as your own original work like that RSOM entrant did.

sweet-cuppin-cakes In reply to Inkthinker [2006-03-24 02:22:57 +0000 UTC]
no no no, you misunderstand me. what i meant by tracing, or mimicry as you have also put it, is to help you learn how to draw these things on your own so that you CAN claim it as your own work. studying pictures and photos of the real thing, and copying them and trying to pass them off as your own work is not what i was getting at, but rather copying purely to learn and understand what you are drawing.

Inkthinker In reply to MauroPeroni [2006-02-04 18:57:55 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! A lot of the clean aspect to it is because of the red pencil sketch technique that's mentioned in the Comments and you can see in the Scraps... and of course there's a little Photoshop adjustment in there as well. Past that, I just like clean lines and I've been at it for a bit.
Not likely to colour it, at least not myself. A few people have picked up on it though, and I got at least one super-awesome painter who wants a shot at it when I get the final pencils reloaded (hopefully I'll get to that soon).

There is just so much here, and all the more to love! The skillfully crafted lines, the quarky subject, the meticulous, intricate design, the accessibility of the heroine, the oersized tits, what's mutual acceptance of reinforces anime fangirl bonds throughout the universe (this goes for fan boys too, you know they're out there, just more embarassed, teehee)!!
Gorgeous work, Inkthinker, this alone has won me over, I look forward to your works to come!
