Description Tentatively done with this for now... it's not a great stitch, but I can do a better scan when I get my rig back up again. Until then, I gotta make do with a li'l bitty scanner, and this was worked up a little large.

14x17, pencil on bristol, about 4-6 hours to completion. You can see rough and partial stages in my Scraps, here -> [link] and over here -> [link] and read up on the story behind this picture if, you know, you're into that sort of thing. Whatever, I'm not here to judge.

I got here from Pencil Jack I seriously like your stuff do you use a lightbox after the rough is done? Do you still use Ross art pencils makes me look foolish because I use leadholders. But if I could get that much line control out of a regular pencil I'll make the switch. You seriously put everyone at Marvel to shame I used to be a big time collector of comics. I think you should check this guy out here his name is Quinton Hoover he has a really engraved way of drawing. [link]

Less awe, more determination.

But I'm impressed as always. You skilled bastard, you

It takes a lot of time and training... if you want it, then you can get there, but it takes a LONG time. I've been drawing most every day since I was about two years old. I've taken it seriously as a career for just over 14 years, and been working as an illustrator for 10, and as an animator for 5. I pretty much revolve my life around drawing.

And there's still a ton of stuff I can't do. I don't paint, nor do I work well in comics, and I make mistakes all the time. So, you know... just a guy what draws. You can do it too, if you don't mind dedicating your existence to it.

Wow. I woulda commented on the scrap version but I don't think I could say anything different about it.
So first off. Instantly. The angle is great. And I love all the little quirky things you threw into this character. It's awesome how she's holding the picks in the locks with just two fingers. :3 Awesome. Also, that's a fantastic costume design, really stunning.

I see someone already made a comment on how she can balance with that *ahem* extra weight. I guess she's one of those characters to which the laws of physics have a slightly skewed effect on. :3 Great work man. Keep it up!

I love her kukri, it's cool how you have her kind of using that as a hanger for her tools, and have it locking the gears on the mechanism. About the bag on the things tounge, is this an indiana jones/golden idol reference? also, very cool design on her shirt. this is a great peice.

Inkthinker In reply to kamoostoos [2006-01-07 08:55:08 +0000 UTC]

Good catch, the bag is indeed a weight of some sort, sand or coins, perhaps. And inspired, at least in part, by Dr. Jones.

Rock!!

Awesome angle, I found myself lowering my head to try and see underneath it! I could image doing a drawing at this angle w/out reference myself, but I definitly couldn't imagine it turning out this good. Excellent

I'm curious, do you use any photo references for tough angles like this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to Wolfe-Wallace [2006-01-06 10:14:32 +0000 UTC]

Nope, though I do have a large collection of photographs of people from all angles and of all shapes and sizes. But when I do this, I just work out the form as best I can from a rough skeleton and basic shapes. You can see more of that in the Scraps sketches, before the cleanup.

You mean using it as a design element? Seemed better than watermarking...

I wouldn't do it in paid work, but for my own stuff it's become a bit of a game... I'll put one or two out where they're obvious, and another one hidden somewhere... there's at least three in this image alone.

monkey-sandwich In reply to ??? [2006-01-05 20:47:00 +0000 UTC]

dude this is amazing! the detail is astonishing as usual. i wish i could colour so i could have a go at this!

just one thing though, not a critiscism: there is a faint line just around her right arse cheek, but youve probly seen it already anyway as i can tell your a perfectionist, hehe.

probably just an effect of using a not-so-good scanner.

and i dont know what they were going on about with the "how did that kit get onto the knife handle?" crap, theres clearly a little loop on the pouch....

Inkthinker In reply to monkey-sandwich [2006-01-05 23:06:57 +0000 UTC]

surely thats an excuse for a gratuitous arse shot? lovely costume detail as always and great pose. The only crit would be that the top right circle thingy needs to be done with a compas or oval template as it looks a little wobbly

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to Astrocat [2006-01-05 23:38:39 +0000 UTC]

Any excuse will do.

Yeah, I very nearly didn't do any of those gears... they're all terribly off. If I'd done things proper, I would have planned them out in perspective properly, but I didn't, and I deserve whatever I get from that. If I was to ink this or something, like for proper work, then I probably would have created those digitally using transform tools to place them in proper perspective.

Oh, well... *shrug*

Astrocat In reply to Inkthinker [2006-01-09 19:54:53 +0000 UTC]

*L* i thought that they were an afterthought as they were still rough. Its weird how poeple notice when geometric shapes and stright lines arn't exact, its a bit like lightswitches in animation. i think the picture does need those extra gears though as they add more interest
