Description
I thought this came out pretty fierce for what started as a late-night loosen-up sketch. The sepia is Photoshop applied, and I did rough it all out pretty heavily in red before I went in with the regular school pencil... helps make it look a little cleaner. Meant to be a swifty, ended up taking a couple hours. This girl appears a lot in situations like this.
no. 2 pencil on Canson sketchbook paper, actual size about 5x7. I flipped it to check for egregious errors and decided I liked it that way, but you can flip it back on your own time and decided if I'm wrong.
EDIT021506
Made a couple little changes... added the sheaths, lengthened her short sword blade and the man's helmet is now farther off his head as a result. And I changed up the hilt on her short sword so that you can see her fingers a little, and darkened a few lines here and there.

This is an amazing picture. The movement of this piece alone made my jaw drop. The orc/ half-orc's expression is priceless, and his positioning is perfect, hunched over in agony, eyes wide. You're fantastic.

Incredible sense of movement. Can't believe you did this as a loosen-up sketch!

Well, it started as a loose sketch, but I took it farther than I do most roughs. Heck, I even did corrections!

the sepia tone of the page gives the image a nice, worn, rustic look that suits the medevil theam, however, before mentioning that, i shoulpd have probably praised the overwhelming sense of movement this peice has since that factor is pretty jaw-dropping. you use your speed-lines so very well indeed; the mix of short, sticato lines used tyo show the vertical thrust of her sword an the more sweeping ones give a sense of direction to every appendage, giving the peice a smooth, fluid feel. the loose belt strap, tassles on her tr9ousers and her hair all work to assentuate this as they too get caught up in the movment. the blur lines on the orcish charater very nicly double for a splurt of blood and theres something heavy about it withc makes it easy to imagine the pencile line as a thick liquid cligning to the sword.
the look on her face gives this somewhat violent peice a light-hearted feel; she looks as though she's having the time of her life and knows that she's whiping the floor with these guys without breaking a sweat. in comparison, you've realoy brought out the aggony the orc's in through his face and you can tell that he's frozed to the spot, making a great contrast with the girl. equally, you've put real force into the sword thrust in the sense that the motion lines around the man's feet shows that he's been pushed back by the force of the blow. the way in which his hands ahave list their grip ion his sword combined with the gormless look seem very fitting considering the fact he's just been squered right through the head.

Wow, I'm glad I clicked on this. I love the poses and it's surprisingly gory. I wasn't expecting this when I breezed past the thumbnail...that, folks, is why the title of your image is as important as the image itself, lol. If I could crit anything, I'd say the sword that penetrated the man on the left seems to be a lot shorter than it should be. Also, the guy on the right, his hand holding the axe looks like it's twisted the wrong way. Awesome job on all the details and everything.

Always a pleasure to view your art. I was about to comment on how the date was backwards, but then I read the comment. I've heard of turning it upside down and such, but I guess unless you use a mirror, flipping is something you're only going to be able to do digitally, I'll do that next time. Good idea...anyways.
The action is really smooth and the facial expressions are excellent, I really liked how you made the chick just be having a grand ol' time beating the crap out of both of em. She's got a long sword. So when you're sketching these, do you get it all right the first time, or do you just draw really lightly? X)

I sketch it all in red really rough, and strip all that out after I scan it. Lots of stuff gets changed as I go, but I keep fixing it up until I like it, then I do it all in regular pencil over the red.
Being able to sketch loose and free and make mistakes without regret has been of great help to me.

Oh I see, I feel stupid for asking this, but how do you strip out the non-black colors? With photoshop I assume?
Mmm, it's a good thing you said that, I fear I may have lost that quality, I'll make sure to be aware of it next time I'm drawing. Thanks for answering my questions. You're amazing.

I'm very curious, but is the rapier that goes through the guy's head, is it shorter than the one that went through the orc? Because the end should have pierced the skullcap, unless it is shorter than the other one.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Inkthinker In reply to AlucardBlues [2006-02-13 22:35:51 +0000 UTC]
Yep, that's part of a two-sword style in which the rapier is paired with a dagger, poniard or even a smaller version of the rapier... the shorter sword is designed to parry, block or catch your opponent's blade. I think the second sword is generally referred to as a "main gauche", but that refers more to it being the "off-hand" sword than to a certain style of sword itself.

Ah, interesting. But you could also use a serrated dagger to catch the opponent's blade. This girl must like rapiers, huh?

The whole image is backwards from the way it was originally drawn. It's an old trick that one can use to check for errors in proportion and composition... and in some cases, like this one, I like the way it looks flipped, so I leave it that way.

It's hidden in the basket hilt of her main gauche. A better way to draw that would have been to angle the basket so that you can see her fingers.

Inkthinker In reply to Madmoonie [2006-02-10 20:29:53 +0000 UTC]
That would a main gauche, possibly a poniard, essentially a short sword designed to catch or block your opponent's weapson so that you can clear the way to strike with your own.
Don't feel too bad for him, I imagine that having a blade like that jammed right up through your chin and out the top of your brain probably turns your lights right out. It's the orc ya oughtta feel bad for... a gut wound like that is equally fatal, but it'd probably take hours, days even, for him to finally die... assuming he doesn't drain out right there.

I see a faint impression of a circle with rays coming from it, behind the orc. It that a technique for composition, or is it some kind of decoration? Either way, I'd like to hear more about it.
