Description
I dunno, just some dude what I doodled... Standard cliche generic D&D fantasy fighter-type guy with sword and half-plate/half-chain armor... with that shield, he oughta have a nice AC but his encumbrance is a little rough, and some GMs would apply balance penalties unless he's got a Feat or something wrapped around that armor. I like the half-skirt of plate, but I admit I kinda drew it too stiff and heavy here... plus, it don't really make much sense unless this guy is usually part of a legion or something.Maybe that's his backstory, ex-soldier turned mercenary dungeonier or something. He's a stubby no-neck little brick, ain't he?
It's about 5x7, just pencil in me sketchbook, but I gave it a little color kiss in Photoshop. I went a little heavy on the face, I think.

I like him. He's representative of many D&D fighters, if you think about. Who but a Paladin would have high Charisma? Certainly not this fella. He's a scrappy guy who looks like he gets by on experience and a bit of guile, not to mention strength. Love the topknot, too.

So. Is it possible that you'd take a commission to finish & color this piece to spec for use as a character portrait for my Halfling fighter? If so, what would your charge be?

I haven't had much open calendar for commissions. For character portraits in B&W I usually get 60 per 6x3 illustration. Fully painted color is about twice that. Halftones or flat colors fall in between.
I'm booked through to the end of September, but if I get a break after that I might take on a few character portrait commissions, at which time I'll make an announcement on the Journal.

Usually, until they come up against something you can't hit. Poison, elements, magic, etc. The biggest fighter burns as easy as the smallest.

Have you considered coloring this picture, or even reworking him a little (incorporating the feedback here) and then possibly turning that into a colored piece?
If you did, I for one would definitely be getting in line for a print (after I get my new laptop), were they to become available.
I really like this piece, all the little details that I only picked up on my second or third viewing--such as the artwork on his sword--really brought it to life and give it a lot of character, and I want to see what it looks like in color.
Of course, there are certain elements in this piece that color pieces really can't capture, but I'm certain you wouldn't be so cruel as to take down the original.

I messed about with it some, but Color and I are currently not on speaking terms. She is a bitch.
I think what would be more likely is that I might reuse some of the details here in a completely different piece in the future. I'm especially fond of that sword.

this guy look like the "c'mon you can beat that guy of 5 metres tall, I could beat a six metres high with one hand" type, that guy in the group that is very self confident and is always ready to fight to show in what he puts more effort
nice drawing too, also I liked that half skirt

This is an amazing piece of art. I have a constantly recurring and evolving character, and this just became his newest look.
He actually doesn't look that encumbered, seeing as he's essentially just wearing a hauberk and carrying a small shield. The scale half-skirt is something odd, though. If the scales are only secured at their tops to a leather backing, it could actually be pretty flexible, but it does look like a lot of weight on one side.
If I were him, I'd switch the half-skirt to the other side and get a bigger shield, that way my protection is more evenly distributed between my left and right sides, and I still look artistically awesome.
I love this piece so very, very much. He looks like such a dirty little bastard, the kind I'd trust with my life (but nothing else).

Inkthinker In reply to lordsmoothe [2008-12-22 04:20:11 +0000 UTC]
I think the reasoning behind having the half-skirt and the shield on the same side was to emphasize protection from a single direction... I guess the idea being that he would try to keep that side facing his enemy as much as possible. In retrospect it's not a very effective armor design for a battlefield, where he'd be likely to get attacked from a flank when it all turns into a scrum, so maybe it's more gladitorial in purpose, meant for one-on-one fights? If he were part of a legion block he might be expected to fight with others protecting the less-armored flank, but that shield is all wrong for formations.
Meh. It's not one of my more well-conceived designs.

Hey I love the drawing. But I have one question... what is the pig-looking creature/image on his belt buckle? Does it represent something or were you just filling in space? (And I don't want that to sound bad, I like it.) Was it supposed to be a pig, wolf, or animal at all, or just some symbol?

Mostly filling space by taking something simple (belt buckle) and making it more complicated. Animal designs are an easy fallback.
Hard to tell, but I think it's a boar.

So, you call that a "sketch", huh...? I mean, being it a sketch (according to you), it is something easy (and perhaps reasonably fast) to make using just a pencil and a piece of paper... Jee!!! Man, this is AWESOME!!! It's not just a sketch... I wish I was able to make "sketches" like that...!
(I really like your way of shadowing...! This combination of crosshatches and and well shaped, outlined forms perfectly balances your work between realism and comicism (<--- well, I'm from Greece, so I'm not really sure if expressions like these do exist in English... Anyway: "comicism" = unrealistic, outline-using art)

hmmm, I'd say AC 21 tops, with just the armor, the shield, and assuming he has decent Dex score/modifier, or a Ring of Protection of at least +2. (Bracers of Armor, ppl! they can very well replace a good armor anytime! ). end nerdy rant. Anyway, the design is quite generic, but neat. As you said, it looks pretty soldier-like, like the most martial version of a fighter, good work.

Inkthinker In reply to just-spike [2006-04-12 22:00:01 +0000 UTC]
It's been so long, I forget how AC works now... did they finally fix it so it adds up instead of starting at 20 and subtracting down? I always thought THAC0 was kinda 'tarded, but that was 2.0 and a long time ago.
Have they figured out how to calculate armor class for mismatched, piecemeal armor? Another thing that I never cared for was the tendency to distribute AC based on armor sets, making it difficult to qualify something like a single gauntlet.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
just-spike In reply to Inkthinker [2006-04-12 23:44:32 +0000 UTC]
well, I started playing when THAC0 no longer applied, but as far as the D20 BAB system for D&D goes, AC is calculated 10 + Armor Bonus + Shield Bonus + Dex Modifier + Any misc./magical modifiers (that's where rings, gauntlets, and other talismans go.). Mismatched armor parts like bracers, gauntlets, and other single parts usually add up for +1 to AC, unless they're magical (bracers of armor, for example, range from +1 to +12, I think.). How long has it been since you've played?

Around 10 years or so, and I was never very serious about it... it's hard to find players more interested in storytelling than power-gaming, and even more rare to find people who don't all try to pull the story in their own directions. I have a 3E PH, but it's more for professional reference use than anything else...
Adding upwards always did seem like a more sensible way to go, it must simplify combat calculations immensely.

just-spike In reply to Inkthinker [2006-04-13 02:14:19 +0000 UTC]
yeah, it's often frustrating (as a GM) that players show no interest in an on-going storyline. I've tried, but often I'll just end up giving them a short back-story for every campaign and set the events according with what they do (because they do love to pull the story in their own directions, most of the time XD). Been having quite a break from GM'ing anyway, and now I'm more focused on character playing. I must admit, trying to make a story of your own as you play is really fun, sometimes. The other GM has little interest in storylines and acts mostly as a referee, so you must rely on your own adventures and interaction with other players to make a story.
And yes, adding upwards is always more easy. Big time.

Inkthinker In reply to just-spike [2006-04-13 08:24:45 +0000 UTC]
Actually, I'd say that's a pretty good trait for a GM to possess, if they can do it right... it prevents plot-forcing elements in the game. But it also requires a group of players with similar goals and a willingness to not only work together as characters, but also as players.
And that's just not something I see often enough, though I must believe they're out there, or the hobby wouldn't have continued to hang on for over 25 years now the way it has.

I've never done anything for WotC that I know of... the closest is probably the material for Dragon Magazine that I did as a third-party sub-subcontractor (the collaborative projects that I did with Jujika of MESS Studios). Most of my other work has been for Kenzer & Company, on either their own "Hackmaster" game or their D20 "Kingdoms of Kalamar" setting.
I'd like to do more of that sort of work, but unfortunately it hasn't been something that I can get paid for often.
