Description
I dunno, just some dude what I doodled... Standard cliche generic D&D fantasy fighter-type guy with sword and half-plate/half-chain armor... with that shield, he oughta have a nice AC but his encumbrance is a little rough, and some GMs would apply balance penalties unless he's got a Feat or something wrapped around that armor. I like the half-skirt of plate, but I admit I kinda drew it too stiff and heavy here... plus, it don't really make much sense unless this guy is usually part of a legion or something.Maybe that's his backstory, ex-soldier turned mercenary dungeonier or something. He's a stubby no-neck little brick, ain't he?
It's about 5x7, just pencil in me sketchbook, but I gave it a little color kiss in Photoshop. I went a little heavy on the face, I think.

Check the individual publisher websites with whom you're interested in working, and look to see if they have submissions guidelines... that's the painful way, but it can work. I got connected to Kenzer through their submissions process, and I got connected to Mystic Eye and MESS through typical networking.
All things considered, I prefer the latter, but it requires you to do a lotta legwork and it takes a long time.

he's so squat and solid, the heavy-ness of him really seems to suit the type of charater he is. the look of him seems to suit the theory you put foward; that this guy was once part of a legionary but parted ways with it to become a mercuinary. there a re aspects of his outfit which have a regimental feel such as the blet buckle and pleated plate but then it has a somewhat customised look as well ( the unkept hair for example detracts from the image of a well-kept solider).
the pose is tense and fitting considering the action being played out and the motion of the medallion wrapped around his wrist really add to the sense that he's brought his sheild across in a fast, sweeping motion.

Wow... that's... way more thought than I put into it.
I think the medallion is probably a little too floaty... if he'd moved that fast, the rest of his outfit should also be more in motion. But I'm glad he's easy to wrap a story around, it means he's got character.

really cool! the mantle is a nice touch. I like his sword a lot! I'd like to see more detail on it tho. I like how his armor is concentrated on his left side, that should cut down on encumbrance. just hope he isn't flanked His eyes seem to be...is floating the word? kinda bugged I guess. his boots look really great too, cool to see someone go slightly more period instead of generic fantasy for a change.

Nice stuff as usual man, his design actuall doesn seem all That generic to me.
I notice your fantasy type guys seem to like to decorate their weapons with nude art. Not that I see a problem with that.

I love his expression and his armor especially. I do like the fact that most of the heavy armor is on the halve of his body that he uses his shield on. Makes sence. His expression has a good sence of awareness like something is coming. I love it.

i like this design all round, espescialy his naked lady sword but i am confused about the sheild "if it were real what would it be made of, how would it act?"
i looks like it's suppost to be metal (i can't spell this morning.) but the arrows make it look like wood.
LOL the sheild was made that way.arrows and all.

Inkthinker In reply to loathechuchu [2006-02-09 20:01:45 +0000 UTC]
It would probably be a wooden shield with a reinforced metal frame and boss... the wood would be relatively light but easily replaced, and effective at blocking most attacks while not weighing down the fighter too much.
Or something like that, anyhow.

sounds efective and reasonably inexpensive now he should have a great big coin purse because he saved sooo much on the sheild.
P.S. it's cool that u reply to everyones comments a lot of ppl don't take the time. thanks.

His face is beast-like enough that I first thought he was a Shifter. Since his armor, shield and sword don't seem to have come in a set, perhaps he has "aquired" the various pieces while adventuring.. that could explain the half-skirt.

You anchored the weight of the character's pose pretty well. I could never draw something on small paper like what you did. I am a messy sketcher. I only wish I could draw as cleanly as your sketches look.
He kind of has a beastly face. Maybe its due to the shading? Reminded me of a lions face a little, minus the mane, of course. Not entirely sure why it does... but yeah. Otherwise, I like it. The detail is very nice.

The handle on that sword is a piece of work. I love it. I also like how you are always trying to tie in alot of practicallity into their armour and what not, but I do believe it is good to let go of that sometimes and just have fun.
Nice work.
It's inspired me to go and doodle some fantasy stuff again.

Too much in the face as in too much tone? Yeah, a little -- perhaps he's flushed. Higlighting nose, brow and eyes would pretty much eliminate any feel of too much tone, I think.
The plate/scale half skirt looks sweet of course, but as you note I doubt it would be flexible enough. If the individual scales were shorter.... well, actualy it might have sufficient horizontal flex to work in a legion or phalanx, but it would certainly be cumbersome in a solo situation. If they were shorter it wouldn't look as nifty but it would work better.
But since when have RPG warriors been concerned with issues of armour practicability! :evillaugter: (well, mine always were, but... yeah, I'm hardly normal
The stiffness of the scale makes it difficult for me to divine just how his left leg is positioned there...
Also, I couldn't help myself and had to grab my handy bastard sword (fake, alas, but about the right weight and useful nonetheless...) and test the sword angle 'cause it didn't seem quite right. Even with hand cocked at that angle, the sword only felt right when the blade was faced more towards the ground. It took a pretty severe wrist bend to hold the blade with the blade as vertical as drawn.
Love the sword design and the overall feel of the guy though. Especially his expression. I think I'm just picking at things to procrastinate a commission work that I'm sucking serious wind on... XD
