He had been walking all night.
He had been walking all night, and he had gotten nowhere.

Circles.
Circles and swerves in the darkness.

“Follow the river” they had said.
“Find the river and follow it.”

Well that was all well and good…
But where was it?
Which one?

He had happened upon a number of rivers and brooks…
None of which had seemed to be the one they had meant.
Clearly one of them had to be it….
Which one?
Unless of course he had still somehow lost it…
Follow in which direction?

If he turned around right now, would that lead him to from whence he came?
Which direction was he facing right now?

The sun had just risen.
And he was lost.

The river is down there, and they probably for meant you to follow it along the stream.

He could feel himself jump.
Swerve around for the sound.

He hadn’t seen them there.
Right where the light pierced the tree crowns.
How long had they been watching…
Why hadn't he seen them sitting right there?

How did you know what I was looking for?
Simple… when you get really worried you talk to yourself.

The plague doctor had risen up.
Collected their things.
Gotten ready to leave.
