It was early morning.Most people were still sleeping.
Not here though.
In this inn, a thief had been discovered pilfering in the small hours of the morning.
And the lodgers had taken matters into their own hands.
Grabbed him by his clothing, wrested all their belongings out of him.
Tossed the entire thief out of the window.
Patting themselves on the back in having solved the problem without too many people waking up, and with no one seeing.
That was what they had told themselves.
They were happy.
The wood pigeons were cooing in the distance.
Then they felt their gaze on them.
The plague doctor.
Silently judging.
Smelling faintly of death.
Saying nothing and just observing.
They had seen everything.
Probably watched the spectacle as it moved from one window to the next.
Silently.
Just a normal lodger like themselves.
Getting their package in order before leaving.
Leaning heavily on their cane as they stood up.
Still watching them in silent derision.
The sun had just barely risen.
It was drizzling slightly.
And the plague doctor, shooting them a last glance, had left.
Beginning the long trek ahead of them.
