(Yes, three times...)

It is said there was a feud between all the birds, on who should be their king.
A loud and long lasting disagreement.
No matter how much they argued, they couldn’t decide. There simply were too many strong contenders for the title. In the end they came up with a solution though.
Whoever could fly the highest, would be crowned king.

So they all did their best.
Exerting their strength to the very last drop.
Many had to give up quite soon.
Some lasted longer.

But the mighty eagle... he was something else entirely.
Flying above the clouds.
Flying so high, he could barely make out the land below him, although his eyes were also exceptional.

He could have stopped a long time ago.
His title was all ready secure.

But the eagle was proud.
The eagle wanted to show off his strength.

In the end he too had to give up.
So he stopped.
And proudly hung there.
With the sun in his back, he seemed almost godlike.
It was clear to everyone, this was their new king.

That however was when the smallest among the birds took flight off his back.
He was so tiny, the mighty eagle had not noticed him hitching a ride.
And right at the time the eagle had exerted all this strength, all he had to do was fly ten meters further up or so.
So he did.
While laughing and singing, he stuck it to all of them.
All the other birds who had only laughed at him.

Today we know him as the bird king.

A bird so small his wingspan will stretch 9 centimetres at most.
A bird small enough to hide between pine needles.
