I wish I could have told you something of what was going on in the world around me at this point. But I didn’t know. Couldn’t possibly know. There were no new updates, and I was to busy walking trough the night, trying to get to the food, before someone else took it.

After using my last strength up the ladder, climbing up into the sunrise, collapsing on the watchtower floor and laying there for many minutes…

Dragging myself into the shower, rinsing any instances of the virus I may have picked up of my body hair and clothes… did this really work anyway? It was the best I had… clawing the gasmask off, with the utmost urgency… breathing… getting water directly into the filter was not a good idea… don’t ask me how I did…

I was so nervous about the food thing, I didn’t even take the time to cover up, before half running into the store room.
No one had been there.
I thanked the gods, the stockpile was untouched.
This sucky day had just gotten a little better.

After filling my backpack with tiny packets of calorie rich dehydrated food… enough for many months… and also energy bars and the like, fishing equipment, steel water bottles, a hand crank charger for my phone… just in case the info lines decided to open again, and a taser… I figured being able to defend myself in all the hysteria might not be a bad idea…
I finally ate.
And I sat down to think. Looked around me for the first time, wondered why anyone would make a watchtower with only stained glass windows… but be that as it may… I had other things to think about…

 I had gotten this far…
What now?

That is when the door started thundering.
I jumped meter high, ripped out of my thoughts.
I hastily wrapped myself in a towel and… stalling for just a moment… I opened it. No one. Looked down.
The girl standing there in front of me couldn’t have been more than 8 or 9. She wore my schools uniform. Well… the younger grades´ version of it.
I just motioned towards the bathroom, and collapsed back onto the chair as she showered.

My god… A child.
And I thought that I had it hard.
I hadn’t considered the fact that as they locked up the school, they also locked in all the little children.
Were they taking better care of them?
Most likely not.
The entire building had seemed deserted as I left.

She looked like a drowned cat more than anything else as she came out.

    -       Are you a zombie?

    -       … No… No I am not… Are you?

    -       No.

    -       Good. Here.

I put a few energy bars and water in her hands. She ate them so quickly she barely took the time to remove the wrapper. Like me, she had probably left because her food supplies had run out.

    -       Where are your parents?

    -       In Roundpike… Last I checked.

That was really far from here.

    -       You lost contact?

    -       I have this phone number…

She pointed to a corner on the inside lining of her backpack. I dialled the number. “The person you are calling have turned their phone off or are unavailable at the moment. Try again later”

    -       Do you have another number?

    -       … What about this one?

I dialled that as well.

“The person you are calling…”

One could see her eyes grow misty with tears.

    -       Don’t cry. Their phones probably just ran out of batteries.

    -       You think so?

    -       That seems the most logical explanation.

Was it though? Was it? I hoped it was. Needed it to be.  And provided they had managed to think straight, in all the chaos… Gotten themselves out of the “epicentre”…

We both sat there in silence for a while.

    -       That dress shirt is going to get wet and cold and give you nothing but problems. Wait here, I hope there is something else in the stock room…

    -       What do you mean?

    -       Isn’t it obvious? We are going to go find your parents.
