Nepeta cataria(catnip) flowers, the shape reminds me of orchids a little bit, but so much smaller.
Sorry about some of the unfocused-ness, they're a little over half a centimeter and my camera just isn't good enough for that.

Um.. lol, I don't know the technicalities either. It was an inch away from the flower and two clicks of the zoom button (not full zoom).

for me it's easier to get things to focus when i am close to the flower and i am not zoomed at all really. if you are not close enough you can always crop it later in photoshop.

That is a gorgeous shot. The background is a little too flat for me.. the flowers are so lit up that I can't make it make sense in my mind that the background'd be black.
The focusing is perfect and the flowers are gorgeous. Very nice work.

i see what you mean about the focus. it is in focus, but your camera can't handle that kind of macro. (i have the same problem
i think perhaps all of the blurry bg makes it look more unfocused than it really is. other people have suggested a good crop and i agree.

I was complaining about the object in focus, not having enough focus actually. I think I take issue with the lack of focus because I compare my photos to dslr photos far too often, my camera can only capture so many details in all it's tiny-ness! Thanks for the comment

I like this shot - the focus being on the one flower, the colors of the flower, the void above them, and how the border is thinner in the side with the flowers than the side without. Nice capture.

As a tiny child I would like to put a fingertip inside the 'mouths' of flowers such as these, and enjoy a many-layered thrill; on one level the soft sensuality of the delicate stamen and yielding skin of the petal against my skin, on another a frisson of excitement and fear that this might just be one of those 'flesh-eating' plants I'd heard about.
Now I know better, but still the tactile excitement still remains, to gently touch the blossom, and it will always bring back the childhood memory of wondering if these soft lips would be the lips that bite.
There is an intimacy in such close ups, that makes one hold one's breath just for a moment, out of respect for the nearness and fragility.

thats a very odd looking flower...it looks good though. but since its so blurred in most of the background i ould crop the picture a bit so that there is not so much of the black area or blurriness

Hmm...as I said, I'm not the best with photography, so here goes...I like the unfocused-ness, actually. It seems to lend a soft glow to the flowers and adds to their "frailty." Also, there seems to be a single subject that stands out from the rest, so, nothing to be unduly worried about. Something that I think could've been done to increase the isolation (if it's even possible because that looks like a hard angle to begin with) of the flowers is if the dark (tree?) background could've completely filled the pic behind the flowers.
