Description
Just: "So, many of you are probably wondering how exactly Dully getting on without a head works. If not, too bad because I'm going to talk about it anyway."
Just: "So, fundamentally the challenge was replacing the functions of a head in a smaller form factor. Also without compromising the aesthetic. The most complex part from a design perspective was the brain, which is a monolithic block of solid-state electronics specially optimized to host consciousness. It's about the size of a deck of playing cards, and I managed to squeeze it in between the spinal column and the lungs without causing any significant problems."
Dully: "Just, are you having another science episode?"
Just: "Yeah, but not running an experiment at the moment."
Dully: "Ah, thought we'd have to remind you about asking permission *before* you experiment on people again."
Just: "Goodness no! I haven't had a relapse in years, and I intend to keep it that way."
Dully: "Carry on."
Just: "Anyway, replacing the functions of the eyes and ears was relatively simple. I embedded a layer of microscopic photo-receptors in the skin of the neck, allowing for full-color vision with all-around coverage. The top of Dully's stump meanwhile contains a sub-dermal microphone array, handling hearing. The precise implementation of this also means that area is super sensitive to physical touch."
Just: "Really the only other change of note is that I stuck a miniaturized audio synthesizer where the larynx used to be, enabling speech without a tongue. Can do a whole lot of other sounds too, but it still got Dully disqualified from A Capella."
Dully: "Not that I sing very much anyway,."
Just: "Anyway, my replacement body uses a lot of the same tricks. The metallic socket improves its ability to hold my head on when I'm hosting my consciousness there, and also interfaces with both the esophagus and trachea to mitigate respiratory and ingested hazards."
Dully: "I actually started with one of those sockets, but I asked Just to remove it. Which is why my stump was bloody for a while."
Just: "As a side note, all the heads I make and use nowadays are fully robotic. I just couldn't cram everything I needed in there otherwise."
