He was the show's creator, not just an animator. You can get more than I'll ever type by looking up Monty Oom here and on Wikipedia, and RWBY on Wikipedia and the Rooster Teeth website.

I still bet it could work since spiritual successors don't have to be from the same person as the original property. Ex. TimeSpilleters and Goldeneye 007, The Wonder Years and Stand By Me, Happy Days and American Graffiti, The Road To El Dorado and Road to... film series, Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project.
