Actually, the standard issue First Order TIE fighter IS still an unprotected chair with two solar panels and a pair of lasers attachted.
However, the Special Forces TIE that Finn and Poe steal is not. It is equipped with more weapons, a deflector shield and a modest hyperdrive.
