Here's a way you can do it:
1. Shot needs to be taken at night (best)
2. Set camera on tripod.
3. Take your widest lens and set it so it points towards the storm.
4. Manual mode, ISO 200 or lower, long exposure (5 sec to whatever your camera and surrounding lighting allows)
5. Take multiple shots, one after the other in hopes that during that long exposure, lightning will strike.
6. Rinse and repeat.
Experiment with the above procedure and see how it goes in your settings in terms of how long you can expose before getting clipping from lights near (or far) you.
Best of luck and thx!

yes, I've been trying that. I'm always a fraction of a second off... it's been storming here every night this past week!!

OK, so take a larger F number, like F16 or all the way to F22. As long as you can get your camera on a tripod and to have the longest exposure you can, without clipping the highlights, you should be fine and not miss a shot.
Best of luck!

Eventually I will be able to snap a photo at the right time to catch lightning. I love your shot.

Thank you but really, to be very honest with you, it's a question of luck more than anything else. However, if you do wish to catch lighting with high chances of success most of the time, there is a device that mounts on your camera that will trigger the shot when lightning strikes. It's not really cheap though. Otherwise, you can do like me... spend hours standing with your camera mounted on a tripod, finger on the trigger, looking at the horizon and hoping to be fast enough. Of all the hours I spent doing that over the past 2 years, this picture is the ONLY one I could come up with.
I guess it was my lucky day! Best of luck to you and keep at it.

I know its mainly luck and every time I do sit outside waiting it seems that as soon as I get up or turn around there went my chance, but thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. And again great shot.

Brilliant ! It's like you've captured a microscopic version of the apocalpyse ! I love how the lightning is perfectly centered in the photography, with other strands of electrical buzz swarm the skies. The gloom and intimidating feel makes me love this photo!

Thanks! Like I said above, it was one lucky shot among 100's of shots that were "too late". A fraction of second before, it would have been a grandiose shot because what you see on the picture is like a second lightning that occurred right after an amazing branching one. I'll try to do better next time!

Thank you! It took so many shots to finally capture one. Been trying even since to redo it but... no luck! haha!
