Collab time again.

So, after Shannon gets her braces taken off shortly after graduating middle school, Shannon comes home and looks at herself in her mother's bedroom mirror. Her mother had helped her brush her bangs over her forehead to hide the mark where the retainer had been just a few hours ago, so she has her normal hair, just with bangs now. Ms. Westerburg mentions that she's gonna get that steak and fries she asked for back at the start of 6th grade tomorrow night when they go out to dinner, and asks if she's going to get it rare or well done. Shannon doesn't answer, or doesn't answer with much enthusiasm. Her mother starts to realize something's not right, and asks what's wrong. Shannon just answers with the most vacant voice that she was waiting for years for this, to see what she looked like, a teenager without the headgear, and now that it's off, it's like a balloon she had inside just deflated. Like she'd been waiting years and years to see a completely different reflection--one that resembled herself, the way she feels like she should look like on the outside. And now that she's finally seen what she looks like without her braces, she's upset to find that she doesn't feel like there's anything really different. She still looks like herself--feeling like her reflection is pathetic rather than proud, as always. Braces or not.

Her mom gives her some comforting words and tells her she's just tired, and she'll feel better about the change tomorrow. And when she leaves to answer the doorbell, Shannon continues staring into the mirror. She starts playing with her hair, and eyeing a magazine on the stand or something, that gives her the idea for what she's about to do next. On a hot impulse, she reaches into the drawer and pulls out a pair of sharp scissors among the disposable razors and her mother's eye pencils. She grabs a handful of her hair, and holds the scissors just midway up her ear. She hesitates for a minute, hearing the voices trailing up the stairs. Suddenly, she hears her mother and Chester, her cousin, coming closer to the bathroom. And just as the door opens, Shannon closes the scissors, and locks of her hair fall to the floor. Mrs. Westerburg gasps, and Chester's like "bruh... that's extreme. I likey," or something like a stoner would say. Shannon's mom was going to show Shannon's braceless face to Chester proudly when she walked in on Shannon starting to cut her hair off. Shannon just stares at them defiantly. Like, even if you don't approve of what I'm doing I'm still gonna do it. She looks from her hair on the floor, to her reflection--now with her hair having a huge clean cut near her left ear. Seeing that Shannon's hair is virtually ruined now, her mother calmly steps closer and says, "Shannon, if you're so desperate to make a change... at least let someone else do it for you." And Shannon, after a moment's hesitation, hands the scissors over to her mother. And she chops it off just under the ear. Shannon would have to hear bullshit when she goes back to school like "she couldn't handle not being a freak, so she had to chop her hair off. Poor thing," and such. And Shannon just ignores them now. She feels closer to who she is on the inside than she had in a while.
