Critical Research Log Entry: ███-╛▌█▐ ██It has been several months since we began our research of the Fragment City of Bitrise and the adventure has been a wild one so far. It would seem the AI residents still have not noticed out observations, and with any luck it will remain that way indefinitely so long as we remain as just idle observers. As researchers this is our plan for Bitrise, given its venerable status and from a certain amount of affection I and my team have come to have for it and its residents. That being said, not all individuals are quite as accepting and passive as we are. Today's incident is stark evidence of this fact. Though most users are unable to detect something as cryptic as the arrival of a fragment city, today the city had the misfortune of entering into the systems of an exception to that rule. Though we are bound by the laws of our profession as net researchers not to reveal the host of any system we are studying phenomena within, let us just say that some systems hold more secrets than others. They mistook the fragment city as a form of esoteric hacking attempt and went on the offensive. Bitrise is more than capable of containing most of the ordinary fragmentation and corruption-inducing phenomena that it comes across during its travels, but its systems were no match for the
We were admittedly rather intrigued to see how the city would fare against an assault by a weapon humans use against one another when cyberspace becomes our warzone. It was as one might expect unfortunately, two uses of the weapon have rerendered entire sections of the city into nothing more than scrambled corrupted garbage. It brings a few tears to the eyes of the team, excited though we were to see the results. Seeing something so majestic and fragile be so brutally torn apart after investigating and learning so many measures and so many careful calculations go into its movement, one would have be an exceptionally detached individual not to feel at least the barest amounts of pity. These are thinking and aware beings after all. Though they are not human and do not seem to be quite as aware as humans, as far as we can tell, they are also not animals, nor are they simple automatons. The nature of the AI of the city still evades us to an extent, but they it has become clear that they do possess something of a self-conscious awareness and possess an obvious social structure and attachment towards others of their own kind. It will certainly be informative to our studies, to see how the city reacts in the long term. For now the city seems in a state of shock and efforts have been set about to contain and repair as much of the corruption as possible. It is likely that this shall be the case for some time to come.
How does one describe the noise one hears during witnessing such an event? There are no earthly words that describe the sounds of the city on a normal daily basis. The closest I could describe it I suppose, would be he sound of what the sound of a soul is like, when it is snuffed out for good. That sound...that feeling, It took every fiber of me not to break down right there. It is not professional, but it is hard to care about such trivial conventions when one witnesses the loss of so much life...no more than life. These are creatures on the border of sentience realizing they are ending en-masse. Whether we understood or not before, I believe it is clear now that we are not dealing with just simple programs, not anymore. Even if they once were just that and we are certain they were. What changes had to take place, what alterations to their code could have lead to such a transformation? What coding goes into a heart, if not into a soul? These are questions that we likely will never know, it is doubtful even those AI know themselves and even less so that they would be willing to share it with the likes of us. Not that we have been able to figure out a means of communication as of yet, mind you.
Fortunately for Bitrise, and our research project, the
